Cell Project
Part 1: This part will be done in school:
Directions: Choose one of the following inquiries below to complete to show your knowledge of cell functions.
You will need the cell chart (journal 9) completed in class to assist you with this assignment. If you choose to
do a poster you will need to supply the poster board yourself. I have materials for the other two options. You
will get 3 days in class to work on it. Whatever is not completed at school will have to be completed at home.
Both parts are due Monday, April 20th.
Inquiry Choices
1.
RIDDLE BOOK- Create a riddle book showing your knowledge of cell parts and functions as it relates
to your “analogy” (house, restaurant, store etc.). Your riddle MUST include all the information on the
cell chart (journal 9). Your book MUST contain the following:
 Typed
 Title of book
 Colored drawings or pictures
 Your riddle and answer must be on the same page but the answer must be hidden
 Neat
2.
POSTER- Create a poster showing your knowledge of cell parts and functions as it relates to your
“analogy” (house, restaurant, store etc.). Your poster MUST include all the information on the cell
chart. Your poster MUST contain the following:
 Typed
 Title
 Colored drawing or pictures of parts used for comparison
 Explanation on small sheets of paper of how the part functions like a cell part. These should be
glued next to the pictures.
 Neat
3.
BROCHURE- Create a brochure to advertise your “analogy” (house, restaurant, store etc.).. Your
brochure MUST include all the information on the cell chart. Your brochure MUST contain the
following:
 Typed
 Title
 Pictures
 Explanation of how the parts in your advertisement function like the parts of the cell.
 Neat
Information to Help With Part 1
ANALOGY
Webster’s dictionary defines analogy as: A similarity between like features of two things, on which a
comparison may be based: the analogy between the heart and a pump.

All of your captions, written or spoken, must show an analogy of the part of the cell and the object you
are comparing it to. You also must explain your analogy in each caption as well.

Example: The cell membrane is like my screen door in my house. The cell membrane selectively lets
things in and out of the cell. My screen door only lets in air not other unwanted things.

Your example: The ___________________ is like __________________. The ________________
(describe the function of the cell part). The _____________________________ (describe the function
of what you’re comparing.)
Part 2: This part needs to be done at home:
Directions: Create a Model of a Cell
1. Choose either the plant or the animal cell to create a model of.
2. Create a model of the cell using whatever materials you would like to use, but try to make each material be a
good representative for the part of the cell that it represents. Use page 43 in your book for ideas of what
organelles look like.
3. Make sure your cell has each of these parts: cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes,
Golgi bodies, endoplasmic reticulum, vacuole, lysosomes and if necessary, cell wall, chloroplasts (for plant
cells)
4. Use a different material for each of the parts of the cell.
5. Label your cell as either plant or animal.
6. Label each part or create a key to show each part.
