Note card analogies Name _________________________ When learning about something new and kind of complicated, it is often helpful to compare that new thing to something that is familiar to you, something you know quite a bit about. Such a comparison is called an analogy. Making an analogy between something new and unfamiliar and something familiar allows you to emphasize ways the new thing is like the thing you already know about. Often analogies help people make connections between new things and familiar things in ways that help them learn and understand a great deal about the new thing. You will make analogies using the parts of the cell on note cards. You must think of things that you are familiar with and compare them to the parts of a cell. For example, your book makes some comparisons between things in a store and parts of a cell on page 18. When you explain your analogy you should use the stem: “A nucleus of a cell is like a __________ of a _____________ because …” Each note card must contain the following: name of the cell part on 1 side name of the comparison part on the opposite side picture of the comparison part on the opposite side explanation of how they are similar on the opposite side Each of your analogies don’t need to involve the same topic. You might say the vacuole of a cell is like a computer cart in a classroom because they both hold stuff. Your other analogies don’t have to be about a classroom or a school. You need 8 analogy note cards for the following 8 cell parts: Nucleus Cell Membrane Vacuole Mitochondria Lysosome Golgi Apparatus Ribosome Endoplasmic Reticulum Scoring rubric Instructions were followed _______/8 (9 note cards, all parts are included on the correct side) Comparison explanation _______/16 (explanations make sense) Total points _______/24
