News Announcement: Friends, how can we help one another?
We want to protect our friends and we look to them for support. But there may come a time, when
one of your friends starts to experiment with drugs. You might feel a loyalty to your friend and not
want to tell anyone what they are doing. Ask yourself these important questions. Will that help your
friend? Will helping them hide their drug usage help them? What if they encourage you to try drugs?
Would you? Would you feel pressured? Would you say yes or no? Mentally preparing yourself for

these possibilities is one way in which you can protect and help yourself and your friends. This is
called mind-setting. Mentally visualize yourself in a situation where you are faced with a drug
issue…and mentally prepare yourself and rehearse what you would/would not do and what you
would say to them. Another way is to know who you can turn to for help. This lunchtime there will
be flyers left on the cafeteria tables, listing questions and highlighting places and organizations that
can help you or a friend deal with drug issues.

“The Best Me is Drug-Free”
Red Ribbon Week honors the life of Drug Enforcement Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camerena, who was killed by drug dealers in 1985.
Kiki was working undercover to eradicate our communities of drugs and those who profit from them. The family and friends of
Kiki wore red ribbons after their loss, and hence Red Ribbon Week was named.
Lely High School is excited about Red Ribbon Week this year as there are many events planned that will not only enhance
school spirit but also bring awareness to the issue of drugs and the negative impact that encompasses the same. Lely recognizes
that researchers have a found a link between hunger and drug addiction. With Red Ribbon Week focusing on ridding our society
of illegal drug use, the LHS student government will team with the LHS Criminal Justice Academy to run a food drive during Red
Ribbon Week. Students donating items will place their name within the FOOD DRIVE RAFFLE•, one entry for each item donated,
with the chance to win big-ticket items such as event tickets to prom, homecoming and the Coconut Bowl!
To show support for those who oppose drug use, each student will be provided an anti-drug use Red Ribbon wrist band to
display throughout the week, and students will be encouraged to wear red clothing each day to show that teamwork is
combating drug use. Those students who are visibly wearing red and have their wrist band displayed will be eligible to win great
raffle items in the 2012 RED RIBBON REWARD RAFFLE. Some of the prizes include anti-drug marked footballs, basketballs, soccer
balls, locker magnets, backpacks, and 2012-13 Lely yearbooks. Through the assistance of our TV production students, the raffles,
along with inspirational anti-drug videos will be televised daily. What a great week they are planning at Lely! Go Trojans!
•
Winners of TICKETS to events must meet all school eligibility requirements at the time of the event. Any student who
wins a ticket but does not meet the requirements to attend will forfeit their ticket without any replacement being
provided. There is no cash value associated with any raffle items and all items are final once received by the students—
no replacements for any reason will be honored. The FOOD DRIVE RAFFLE will have 16 drawings, based on the following
groups with the following items available.
