GOALSOFTHECOURSE:
Mygoalsforthiscourseareto
(1)
engagewithyouinanexplorationoftheoriesofpersonality,
(2)
introduceyoutoavarietyofpeopleandideasthatmayaidinthisexploration,and
(3)
initiateaprocessofcriticalanalysisthatwillallowyoutoquestionthe“authorities”with
yourownideasaboutpersonalityandhumanity.
YoushouldknowatthestartthatIdon’tbelievethatanytheoryhasgottenitrightyet,soitwillbevery
difficultforyoutosaysomething“wrong”or“stupid”inclass(thoughI’msureitcouldbeaccomplishedif
youreallytried).

Theexamswillconsistofmultiplechoiceitems,shortanswerand/orshortessayquestions.Examswill
coverinformationcoveredinclassand/orthetextbook.Eachexamisworth20%ofyourgrade.

Youwillwritea3to5pagepaperinwhichyouselectawell‐knownfigureanddevelopananalysisof
theirlifefromtheperspectiveofoneschoolofpersonalitytheory.Ifyouwouldlike,youmaywriteyour
ownautobiographyandanalyzeitinthesameway.Inthepast,manystudentshavefoundthe
autobiographytobeaninterestingandthoughtprovokingassignment,soIencourageyoutowriteabout
yourownlife.Thegoaloftheassignmentistoapplytheworkofonepersonalitytheorist,orgroupof
theorists,todevelopanunderstandingofoneindividual’slifestory.Guidelinesforthepaperwillbe
provided.
JournalEntries‐15%ofyourgrade
Studentswillcreate6journalentries(1‐2pageseach,double‐spaced)reflectingonthereadingandclass
materialaswellaspersonalmaterialbroughttolightbythecourse.Thesejournalsareaforumforyouto
applythecoursematerialtoyourpersonalexperienceandbegintograpplewithwhatyoubelieveabout
humannature.Asjournalswillincludepersonalmaterial,theywillnotbegradedexactly.Instead,
journalswillbemarkedwithacheckminusifdonepoorly,doesnotreflectthereading,orhaveinsights
(2points),ifturnedinandisabouttherelevantchapter(3points),andacheck‐plusifdiscussionofthe

Classeswillbeinteractivewithtimefordiscussionandactivities.Youareexpectedtocometoclass
preparedtodiscussandcritiquethereading.Also,theremaybeoccasionalbriefassignmentsgiventhe
weekbefore(e.g.keepingadreamlog)designedtoenhanceyourunderstandingofthetheory.
