ACADEMIC DEANS’ COUNCIL MEETING March 10, 2005 Attending: Kay Clayton, Pam Trant, Alberto Olivares, Bill Heenan, Gladys Hines, Robert Diersing, Ron Rosati, Ronn Hy, Iqbal Omar (representing Faculty Senate), Frank Ureno, Mike Daniel, Frank Sanchez (representing System Center), Hal Ham (representing Academic Affairs) I. II. Announcements/Discussion/New Business A. Mary Gonzalez, Special Programs, and Karen Engebrecht, Career Services, will be visiting with the Council in the near future regarding updated information on their programs. B. Dr. Clayton asked the deans to ensure that their academic advisers are using up-todate transcripts when advising students. Transcripts should always be considered when advising students regarding their academics. C. Pam Trant asked the deans to have their administrative assistants help with ensuring that Intersession Request Forms have been approved before classes are submitted to be included in the schedule. D. Faculty awards are indicated in the commencement program every May. Pam Trant asked that the deans submit their awards and the individuals receiving those awards to her by April 1. If the award recipient is not known at that time, the name of the award should still be submitted, and the name of the recipient can be added when the commencement blue line is received. E. Two recent Faculty Senate Resolutions were distributed, and the deans were asked to submit comments to Dr. Clayton. 1. Resolution 3.01.05.01 2. Resolution 3.01.05.02 F. Dr. Clayton discussed with the Council the proposed cut by the legislature of the institutional enhancement funds. A handout was distributed which shows Texas Public Universities Institutional Enhancement as a Percentage of State Appropriations. G. An update on Institutional Effectiveness Report submissions was distributed. Reports A. Frank Ureno recently attended a recruitment trip to Mexico. Approximately 600 names were received as students interested in attending A&M-Kingsville. Mr. Ureno will send the names of these students to the appropriate deans for their follow-up in assisting to recruit these students. B. Gladys Hines reported that Jim Boyle will be contacting students for counseling who received a grade of “C” or below in their courses based on mid-term grades. Academic Deans’ Council Meeting March 10, 2005 Page 2 C. Representatives from engineering and the administration are in Washington, D.C. while NSF is reviewing the CREST grant. NSF will be making decisions on continuing that funding for the next two years. D. Alberto Olivares thanked the deans for submitting their 2003 Outcomes for the graduate program reviews. E. Ron Rosati reported that the SACS On-Site Visitation Team will be on campus April 11-13. Plans are on schedule. The team will be staying at the King Ranch. Dr. Rosati will be giving a SACS update at the next ADC meeting on March 22. Dr. Rosati also reported on several upcoming events for the College of AGHS: 1. April 3, Marc Cisneros Center for Young Children Naming Ceremony: 1 pm, CYC (Kicks off the Week of the Young Child) 2. April 5 Ag Extension Service & Experiment Station Directors Meeting: Noon - 2 pm, Kleberg Ag 102 3. April 20 AGHS Recognition Banquet: 6 pm, SUB Ballroom 4. May 14 Wildlife Research Park Naming & Dedication. III. F. Ronn Hy announced that ASHA will be on campus March 21-22 to consider the reaccreditation of CSDO. Additionally, two candidates for the position of Dean, University College, will be on campus for interviews - one on March 21 and the other March 29. G. Robert Diersing asked for an update on Banner training and implementation. Maggie Williams and the co-chairs of the Banner Implementation Team will attend the March 22 meeting. The Council members expressed concerns regarding Banner in four areas: 1. Prerequisites will not be in place for Fall 2005 registration. 2. Registration for summer and fall will be split. 3. There is not current information in the test system. 4. The quality of the training to date for advisers has been poor. Dates to Remember A.
