of them award winning. Included a most diverse and entertaining First FeatureOpera Prima Selection & Women Filmmakers Showcase. Documentaries that will
enlighten and inspire. And, as always, a sizzling hot Shorts program; as you may
already know the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science™ recognizes
LALIFF as a qualifying festival for Oscar® consideration in the short film category.
We are also going to serve up our most fantastic Retro-Films program, as LALIFF
takes great pleasure in offering you the cinema of yester-year; being the only
Latino International Festival on the planet to have its collection of films kept at the
Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Film Archive. This year, the documentary
Huelga, directed by Skeets McGrew has been chosen for presentation; part of our
pledge to preserving our cinematic history for the world and our communities. It’s a
valuable historical documentary about the most crucial strike in U.S. agricultural
history which went on for five years. It depicts the efforts of the farm workers to
unionize under the leadership of one of the most important social justice advocates
in history, labor leader and farm worker, César Chávez. The Academy Film Archive,
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences™ created these fully restored prints.

2013 GABI-GABRIEL FIGUEROA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The GABI Lifetime Achievement Award is named after famed Mexican
cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa, best known for such films as Macario, Pedro
Paramo, and Luis Buñuel’s Simon Del Desierto. Figueroa became the first Mexican
cinematographer nominated for an Oscar for his work in Night of the Iguana. In this
very special 16th year anniversary of the Los Angeles Latino International Film
Festival, we are honored to announce Pablo Ferro as the recipient of the 2013
Gabi-Gabriel Figueroa Lifetime Achievement Award.
Cuban born, title designer Pablo Ferro took an early interest in graphic design and
animation. He received no formal training or education in these fields, but his passion
for the two catapulted him towards a successful self-taught career. Using a book by
Preston Blair, Ferro taught himself animation techniques and expanded his abilities in
the field of design. In 1963 he worked with Stanley Kubrick to create one of his most
famous title sequences for the film Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. His bold and innovative creations have been seen in other
films including The Thomas Crown Affair, L.A. Confidential, Philadelphia, Doctor
Dolittle, Psycho, and Good Will Hunting.
In the everlasting spirit of Gabriel Figueroa, it is the Los Angeles Latino International
Film Festival’s honor to present Pablo Ferro with the 2013 Gabriel Figueroa Lifetime

INSTITUTE YOUTH PROGRAM
AT THE LOS ANGELES LATINO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2013
The core value of the Latino International Film Institute Youth Program continues to be
literacy-based, engaging students in reading and writing in all three levels of education:
Elementary School, Middle School and High School. We welcome all schools from the
Los Angeles County area but we especially outreach to at risk students and those with
minimal funding in the arts. These students creatively continue to address issues that
particularly affect at-risk youth in both unique and engaging visual and narrative ways.
Our partnership with schools such as Bellflower High School, Los Angeles School of
Global Studies, Normandie Avenue Elementary School, Hollywood High School New
Media Academy, and Panorama High School is to improve graduation rates and motivate
future artists. The film screenings and filmmaker worshops we have scheduled for this
festival are designed to spark curiosity in the arts.
These events are educational opportunities that can be expanded in the classroom
through the curriculum developed by the Youth Advisory Board members.
The Filmmaker and Artists workshops presents students and teachers to filmmakers,
screenwriters and actors who provide their experiences and knowledge. These
professionals also inform the students their artistic dreams are attainable and
possible through drive, persistence and educational requirements. For the teachers
this is an opportunity for them to further develop and strengthen their connection to
their students.

Before you raise your first dollar for production, what kinds of financial information
should you prepare? How do you prepare such numbers on a shoestring budget?
What kinds of numbers are investors looking for? How does the typical film investor

you get access to sales estimates, government tax credits and loans? Join this discussion by film finance veterans and producers for an insider look at how investors and
distributors view a film project.
How do Latin American films get financed? Each country has its system, and most
countries are offering financing as incentives for local filmmakers. Are they offering
nationals living in the U.S. these incentives? Find out at this panel moderated by
Sydney Levine who is in the process of writing Iberoamerican Film Financing to be

A CONVERSATION WITH HISTORY
A Conversation with History explores the ongoing issue of immigration, and national
identity. The films n this year's festival present portraits of immigrants and their stories
of suffering and triumph in their quest to create a better life for themselves and their
families. The national dialogue on immigration, particularly as it relates to immigrants
from Latin America, has raised the question of what is an American. As the US demographics change we see the struggle to understand and accept a new national identity.
Theconversation will follow a special presentation HUELGA

Cuba 1961: 250,000 volunteer teachers
join the national literacy campaign. Almost
half of them were under 18 and over half of
them were women. Together they taught a
nation to read and write, and their lives
would never be the same.
A young soldier comes home from war to
find his previous life turned upside down.
But is what he finds real?
The Shooting Star Salesman is the story of a
19th century ageless Salesman who is granted
the magical ability to align individuals with their
own unique shooting star to wish upon. His
rare gift becomes a curse when he outlives
his family, turning him into a recluse and
breaking the magic of the shooting star machine.

A valuable historical documentary about
the most crucial strike in U.S. agricultural
history which went on for five years. It
depicts the efforts of the farm workers to
unionize under the leadership of one of the
most important social justice advocates in
history, labor leader and farm worker, César
Chávez. A recut version of the documentary
was mentioned in the Village Voice which
gave an accurate description of the theme
portrayed in the documentary Huelga as “a
movingly candid picture of the material
poverty and spiritual pride and persistence
of the Mexican American farm workers who,
in the second half of the 20th century, are
still living the kind of miserable migratory
existence John Steinbeck wrote about 30
years ago.” Huelga was not well received or
understood when a first version of the film
was screened to the public, because audiences couldn’t relate to the workers struggle. The production team decided to shoot
new sequences of the strike to persuade
audiences about why a union was needed
to improve the working conditions of the
farm workers. Luis Valdez of El Teatro
Campesino, who took part in the grape
boycott and strike and saw the first version
of the documentary in Delano, agreed to
help the filmmakers achieve a better perspective of the farm workers’ struggle.
