Humanities Antiquities: Egyptian Accession No. Title 13.10.11.25 Mummy Count 1 Place Date Description Legal status Acquisition History Africa: Northern Africa; Egypt; Hawara Roman Period Mummy of a young boy with decorative wrapping and a painted panel portrait. This mummy was examined radiographically in November 1966 and is referred to as 'Liverpool No 7' in the publication (Gray and Slow, 1968, pp.28-32, pls. 38-43). The bandaging was described by the excavator as the most perfect example of the complex system of diagonal winding. The colours have now faded, but the thirteen layers were, from the outside, gilt, red, white, red, white, red, white, blue, white, red, white, brown and white. No studs were necessary to hold the bandages in place. The portrait is badly damaged, but was originally very fine. It is probably that the damage was due to weathering and occurred during the time that elapsed between the preparation of the mummy and the actual burial (Shore, 1962). An amulet, probably metallic, lies within the mouth on the surface of the tongue. The mummy was examined radiographically in November 1966 and is referred to as 'Liverpool No. 15' in the publication (Gray and Slow, 1968) pp. 56-60, pls. 87-91. The muumy came to England inside a coffin it did not belong to originally - a New Kingdom coffin belonging to Ankhsenhesi, a chantress of the temple of Amun (M14049). The general condition of the mummy is good. The outer shroud is held in place by broad retaining bandages which almost envelop the head, and which cross at the waist, pelvis and knees. There is slight damage to the outer wrappings just above the knee. The bandages are intact if loose in places, with bloom on surface. Radiographs of the abdomen reveal an opacity, so it is possible that this mummy has not been eviscerated.
