Mitosis
Prophase/metaphase
Content Purpose:
Explain and model the process of Mitosis, Prophase and metaphase stages.
Mitosis (the second stage of the cell cycle) consist s of 4 stages: Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and
Telophase. The end result is 2 daughter cells from one parent cell.
Prophase:
Chromatin within the nucleolus coil and become chromosomes in an x-shape.
The Centromere connects to the center of the chromosome.
The nuclear membrane breaks apart.
The Centrioles move to opposite sides of the cell to serve as anchors.
Spindle fibers appear from the centrioles and attach/remove the centromeres.
Metaphase:
The sister chromatids are attached to the spindle fiber.
The chromatids are lined up along the equator of the cell.
See www.cellsalive.com for a demonstration of the phases of mitosis.
