SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS
Duke hits the road after a 2-0 opening weekend
with wins over High Point and Air Force. Junior
Myles Jones led the way in scoring with 12 points
(6g, 6a), while freshman Justin Guterding threw in
10 goals in the two wins ... The Blue Devils started
three sophomores on close defense - Brian Dunne,
Ethan Powley and Ian Yanulis, while Luke Aaron was
between the pipes for the majority of minutes ... At
the faceoff X, senior Jack Rowe won 31-of-52 faceoffs
in his first action as the top draw man ... He added 16
ground balls to his stat line as well ... Aaron finished
the weekend with a 8.58 goals against average and
a .548 save percentage in 98 minutes of action.
ABOUT DENVER
Denver, a 2014 NCAA semifinalist, returns a highpowered offense and eight starters overall from
last season’s squad ... The Pioneers welcome back
their top five goal scorers, including the attacking
trio of Wes Berg, Jack Bobzie and Zach Miller, which
combined for 188 points a year ago ... Ryan LaPlante
is back to anchor the Denver defense ... The senior
goaltender posted an 8.66 goals against average last
season and likely will play the full 60 minutes – he
split time with Jamie Faus last season – for the first
time since April 13, 2013.
ABOUT MERCER
Mercer heads into the weekend after dropping
its season opener to Boston University, 18-6, last
weekend ... 2014 points leader Chris Baxa led all
Mercer scorers with three goals, while Mike Nugent
made 15 saves in goal ... The Bears, in their fifth
season as a varsity program, posted a 7-7 record
in 2014 en route to finishing with a share of the
Atlantic Sun regular season crown ... Mercer returns
27 players from that squad, including seven starters.
LACROSSE COACHING LEGENDS SQUARE OFF
Duke head coach John Danowski and Denver head
coach Bill Tierney are two of the premier coaches
in lacrosse ... Combined they have won 687 games
and nine NCAA titles over the past 30-plus seasons
of coaching ... Both are on pace to reach 350 career
wins and will be the second and third Division I
head coaches to reach the benchmark ... Only three
coaches overall across all three divisions have
achieved the feat.
NCAA SEMIFINAL REMATCH
For the second time in two weeks, Duke will face one
of its 2014 NCAA Tournament opponents ... Duke and
Denver last squared off in the semifinals with the Blue
Devils emerging victorious, 15-12 ... The Blue Devils
return seven goals and three assists of the 24 points
scored in the game, while Denver welcomes back 14
of the 15 points ... The Duke goalie tandem of Luke
Aaron and Kyle Turri combined for seven saves, while
Denver’s returning goalie Ryan LaPlante had five of
the nine stops in the game.
VERSUS NO. 1 SINCE 2007
Duke has played a top-ranked squad eight times
since head coach John Danowski took over the reins
in 2007 ... The Blue Devils are 5-4 in that span with
four of those wins coming against Virginia.

DUKE ROSTER SHOWS GROWTH OF LACROSSE
Duke’s roster reflects the growth of the game of
lacrosse throughout the United States ... Fifteen
different states are represented on the roster,
ranking from the East Coast, Midwest, Southwest,
and West Coast.
California (2), Connecticut (3), Florida (1), Maryland
(3), Massachusetts (4), Michigan (1), Minnesota
(1), New Jersey (5), New York (13), North Carolina,
Pennsylvania (6), South Carolina (1), Texas (2),
Virginia (3), Washington (1)
RESCH JOINS DUKE FROM DARTMOUTH
Redshirt senior Pat Resch is the latest on the list of
players who have come to Duke for a final season
after playing three years for an Ivy League foe ...
Resch graduated from Dartmouth this past spring,
but had an extra year of eligibility after missing most
of 2013 to injury ... A defensive midfielder, Resch
played in 44 games for the Big Green, scoring 14
goals and 11 assists and picking up 102 ground balls.
A SECOND ROWE ADDED TO THE MIX
Sophomore Kyle Rowe joins his brother, senior
captain Jack Rowe, on the squad after a stellar
rookie campaign at Stony Brook … Rowe won nearly
63 percent of his faceoffs for the Sea Wolves and
ranked fourth nationally with 248 victories at the X
… He also picked up 160 ground balls … In his meeting
with Duke in 2014, Kyle went 8-of-23 … His brother
Jack, also a faceoff specialist, won 6-of-8 against
Stony Brook last season.
ELEVEN FRESHMEN JOIN THE BLUE DEVILS
A collection of 11 freshmen from nine different
states joined Duke this fall ... Seven of the 11 were
listed among Inside Lacrosse’s Top 100 freshmen
with four coming in the top 11 ... Greg Pelton, a
close defenseman, headlined the list at No. 3, while
midfielder Jake Seau is 10th ... Minnesota native
James Riley is 39th and South Carolinian Mitch
Russell is 41st ... In addition, attackman Justin
Guterding is considered the top post-graduate player
heading into the 2015 season ... Overall Duke’s class
was tabbed third behind Johns Hopkins and Notre
Dame by Inside Lacrosse.

JOHN DANOWSKI
Cemented as one of the top coaches in college lacrosse, John Danowski has led the Duke men’s lacrosse team to unprecedented success during his eight-year
tenure. Danowski was introduced as Duke’s eighth head men’s lacrosse coach on July 21, 2006 and quickly led the Blue Devils to some of the most successful
lacrosse seasons in school history and to three NCAA Championships in five seasons.
In Danowski’s eight years at the helm of the Blue Devils lacrosse program, he has compiled an impressive 128-32 record in leading Duke to seven ACC regular
season titles and four ACC tournament titles, eight straight appearances in the national semifinals, four in the NCAA title match and ultimately to the 2010, 2013
and 2014 national titles. The most recently NCAA crown put Danowski, a winner of 347 career games, among a small group of nine coaches to win three national
titles and among eight to capture consecutive crowns.
A winner of 80 percent of his games at Duke, the individual awards Blue Devil players have garnered is equally impressive. In only eight seasons, Danowski
mentored 54 All-America selections, 25 All-ACC choices, two Tewaaraton Trophy winners, a pair of USILA Attackman of the Year honorees, a USILA Defenseman
of the Year, a USILA Midfielder of the Year and 15 USILA Scholar All-America picks.
While the success on the field is unsurpassed in Duke lacrosse history, the student-athletes excellence in the classroom also is unrivaled. The Blue Devils
consistently lead the ACC in All-ACC Academic picks as well as players on the ACC Academic Honor Roll. This past season, Duke had 34 players – over 75 percent
of the team – achieve a 3.0 grade point average for the entire academic year and a program-best four seniors earned USILA Scholar All-America honors.
