Course Outline:
Computer Design Methodologies, Performance Analysis, Computer Arithmetic, CPU and Instruction Set Design, Control Design, Memory Organization, Pipelining, and introduction to
Vector Processing and Superscalar CPU, I/O
Prerequisites:
Logic Design, High-level language (e.g. C) and Assembly language

• Review of Logic Design (1 lecture)
• Number Systems (2 lectures)
• Computer Arithmetic (3 lectures)
• Instruction Set (3 lectures)
• CPU Datapath (4 lectures)
• Control Unit (3 lectures)
• Memory (4 lectures)
• Pipelining (3 lectures)
• Advanced CPU (2 lectures)
Grading Policy:
1st Exam (5th/6th week)
2nd Exam (10th/11th week)

• All exams are close-book unless specified otherwise. Make-up exam is given only under special
extenuating circumstances and up to the discretion of the instructor.
• You are required to attend every class. Exception is given only if you notify the instructor with a
legitimate reason in advance.
• All assignments are due at the beginning of the class time on the due day unless specified otherwise.
No late turn-in will be accepted.
• All assignments need to be bound well and arranged in the correct order before being turned in.
Otherwise, 20 percent of total points will be marked off.
• All assignments should include your work, or else no credit will be given.
• No copying is allowed on any assignment. No credit will be given to both copier’s and copiee’s
work.
• All behaviors of academic dishonesty will be handled according to university policy.
