February Pepeluali Roselani Scene 2016 Aloha from our General Manager Inside this issue Message from General Manager Managing Care Giver Stress & Open House Events Highlights in Brief Picnic for Poki Calendar of Events This day in history Birthdays Sudoku & Word Search Employee of the Month Valentine’s Day Luncheon Valentine’s Day Editor: Diane Alba-Means Marketing Director February 8, 2016 marks the first day of the Year of the Fire Monkey, according to the Chinese lunar calendar, or Farmer’s calendar as it is commonly known. The last time it was the Fire Monkey’s turn was 1956…and you remember the important historical events of 1956 don’t you? The ocean liner SS Andrea Doria sank, and Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier of Monaco. But the biggest news of the year was Elvis Presley. Elvis Presley released "Heartbreak Hotel". Later that spring Elvis performed "Hound Dog", on The Milton Berle Show, and scandalized the audience with his suggestive hip movements. Then in the fall of 1956 Elvis Presley appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show for the first time. Chinese New Year is the beginning of a 15 day celebration, often referred to as the Lantern Festival. In Chinese tradition, you should wear something red. I guess you could just keep wearing the same red outfit right up until Valentines Day, February, 14. I loved Valentine cards when I was a kid. Do you remember the fuzzy ones with lace and cupids in shiny gold? I would agonize for hours at Woolworths over which card to get my mom. I always wanted to get the big oversize ones with lots of goop on them, and flowery sentiment. Sometimes I would buy her two or three because one couldn’t hold all the love. When my mother died and we were going through her keepsakes the only valentine she saved from me was a lousy little one, made by hand, with misspelled writing in crayon. I even spelled “love” wrong. I wonder why she would save that one instead of some of the good ones? Mother’s are funny that way. Happy Valentine’s Day! Luncheon: 11:30 am - Dining Rooms Concert with Anne Ku: 3:30 pm - Lobby Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14. Traditionally in the west, this is the day that lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine's cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery. The holiday, often referred to as St. Valentine’s Day, is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of "valentines." Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance. - Oscar Wilde
