Bell Work:
What is taken in during photosynthesis? Where does photosynthesis occur? What is produced during photosynthesis?
Cellular Respiration is NOT breathing! It uses oxygen, but occurs in all your cells, not just your lungs.
Remember the food we eat is broken down to produce ATP.
Cellular Respiration releases chemical energy from sugars and other carbonbased molecules to make ATP when oxygen is present.
This is an aerobic processneeds oxygen to take place.
Occurs in the mitochondria the power house of the cell and where most of the cells ATP is made.
Mitochondria has 2 parts that are involved in cellular respiration
The matrix and the inner mitochondrial membrane
1
Glycolysis
Glycolysis splits glucose into 2 threecarbon molecules and makes 2 molecules of ATP.
Occurs in the cell's cytoplasm
Anaerobic because it does not need oxygen to occur.
The products of glycolysis are broken down in the mitochondria to make ATP during cellular respiration.
Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration are almost mirror images of each other.
Chloroplasts absorb energy from the sun.
Mitochondria release chemical energy to make ATP.

Krebs Cycle produces molecules that carry energy to the second part of cellular respiration
Takes place in the matrix of the mitochondria
1. The threecarbon molecules from GLYCOLYSIS are broken down and produce a small number of ATP molecules.
2. Carbon Dioxide is given off as waste.
3. Energy is transferred to the second stage of cellular respiration.
Electron Transport Chain made of proteins and needs the energy from the Krebs cycle and Oxygen to make ATP.
Takes place in the inner mitochondrial membrane
4. Oxygen is added, a large number of ATP molecules are produced and water and heat are given off as waste product.
About 36 molecules of ATP are made from the breakdown of one molecule of glucose.
2 from Glycolysis and 34 from cellular respiration
Just like photosynthesis has more enzymes and many more steps, so does cellular respiration.
