C O M M U N I T Y F O O D S H ANNUAL REPORT FOR FISCAL YEAR 2012-2013 A little giving goes a long way A R E Our Mission Community Food Share’s mission is to ensure that no one in Boulder and Broomfield Counties goes hungry. Guiding us in this mission are the following long-term organizational goals, as established by Community Food Share’s Board of Directors: 1. Food insecure individuals have access to nutritious food A. Target Audience: Households up to 130% of poverty level, with children being highest priority B. Target: three meals per day C. Food is available every day of the year D. Community Food Share food supply is consistent with USDA nutrition guidelines 2. Procuring /distributing food to our target population occurs in an effective /efficient manner 3. Food insecure individuals are assisted in accessing food from federal, local government, and non-profit programs About the Cover: This Feeding Families member has selected a variety of food during our Feeding Families Warehouse Distribution program. An average of 613 families “shopped” weekly at our warehouse, and received an average of 76 pounds of food each week. Typical foods included fresh produce, milk and dairy products, frozen meats and prepared meals, pinto beans, rice, soups, baby food, and bakery items. C O M From the CEO and Board Chair M An extraordinary year for Community Food Share! U N I In this past fiscal year, thanks to the generous support of time, talent, and treasure from community members, Community Food Share achieved incredible results for those in need in Boulder and Broomfield Counties. This annual report details the breadth and depth of our highly efficient and generously supported operations, and we hope you will enjoy it and share it with others. T Y F O O D While every year at Community Food Share seems busier than the previous one, we can honestly say that FY13 stands out in our 32 years of serving Boulder and Broomfield Counties as one of our most eventful. This year, we purchased a larger facility in the Colorado Tech Center in Louisville, successfully completed our $5.1 million capital campaign, paid off the new mortgage, all the while maintaining our core operations of food procurement and distribution through our “safety net” network of over 50 Member Agencies and our own Direct Distribution programs. S H A R E A N N U A L Our Niwot facility opened in 1999, after our first very successful capital campaign. It is 20,000 square feet, and in that year we distributed 1.4 million meals (1 meal = 1 pound). In 2004, we doubled the size of the freezer/ cooler unit, and by 2008 we were operating at capacity. In this past fiscal year, out of our Niwot site, we distributed over 7.5 million meals, at a value of $12.7 million. R E P O R T Fast forward to FY13, and it seemed that all the pieces fell into place. By the beginning of the year we had already raised over $1 million and also put a contract down on our new 68,000 square foot facility. To our great good fortune, in July, 2012 a very magnanimous, anonymous donor committed a $2.5 million cash donation and charged Community Food Share to raise an additional $1 million by year-end. Thanks to our very generous community, we reached the goal by mid-December, and soon after were able to pay off our $3.5 million mortgage and proceed with renovation plans. F O R F Y 1 3 But, as all-consuming as the capital campaign was, we never took our eyes off the ball — the reason we are here — to provide nutritious food for those in need in our own community. While a great deal of time and effort was placed on preparing for the future, our operations staff and volunteers kept their focus on the present, and continued to procure and distribute food daily. While capital campaigns tend to pull dollars away from annual funding, our community shared our vision, and supported both efforts. All in all, this was an extraordinary year for Community Food Share and for our community. On behalf of those in need in Boulder and Broomfield Counties, we express our sincere gratitude to our 2,444 volunteers, food donors, and the many individuals, local governments, foundations, and corporations who supported us, once again, making it possible for us to effectively serve those in need of food assistance. With warmest regards, Jim Baldwin CEO Tom Metzger Chair, Board of Directors 1 Where Does the Food Come From? Community Food Share is the central source for food procurement and distribution in Boulder and Broomfield Counties, with the goal of eliminating hunger and food insecurity for all community residents. We procure food in various ways. Under the auspices of Feeding America, Community Food Share acquires donated food from local, regional, and national sources. Feeding America is the largest hunger-relief organization in the U.S., with 202 member food banks. We pay transportation and Value Added Packaging costs for food received from outside of our local area. Community Food Share also procures food from local food industry donors, grocery stores, and farms. Local food donors include: WhiteWave Foods, Walmart, Huron Produce, Whole Foods Market, Target, King Soopers, Safeway, Sprouts Farmers Market, Aurora Organic Dairy, EVOL Foods, and Rudi’s Bakery. Significant purchasing power enables Community Food Share to acquire food wholesale, in semi-truckload quantities, supplementing our inventory with nutritious staple product. The food includes pinto beans, rice, canned vegetables, and a grain, such as pasta or macaroni and cheese. 2 Feeding America National Store Donation Program Community Food Share has participated in two store donation programs through Feeding America since 2008. Our drivers pick up nutritious food daily from 10 King Soopers stores and 7 Walmart Super Centers. The donated product from these two stores consists primarily of frozen meat, frozen prepared meals, and fresh produce. In FY13, King Soopers donated 195,422 pounds of food and Walmart donated 939,302 pounds of food. Warehouse Coordinator, Dave Richey, prepares pallets of food for distribution to our Member Agencies. Community Food Share is a family life Thank you so much. Trucking costs to bring donated product from regional and national sources, as well as Value Added Packaging costs, increased by 10-15% since last year. In FY13, including VAP, we paid $.10-$.20 per pound for fresh produce, and we now pay $.15-$.25 per pound, and as high as $.30 for fruit in season. M U N I T Y F O O D Wholesale purchase prices also increased. For example, the price of most canned goods increased by 5-7% in the last year. S H A R E A At Earth’s Table garden, Bert Nett leads the effort of growing fresh produce for CFS. His work includes preparing, planting, irrigating, weeding and harvesting the gardens, along with a crew of volunteers. In FY13, 6,000 pounds of produce were donated. N N U A saver for us and for our children. Increased Food Acquisition Costs M Ball Corporation’s ”Let’s Can Hunger” food drive was part of the FY13 Corporate Challenge. Nineteen companies, composed of 7,112 employees, raised $350,000 and collected 35,066 pounds of food during the 18th annual Corporate Challenge! This provided over 1,435,000 meals! The FY13 Corporate Challenge was the most successful to date. In honor of WhiteWave Foods’ new independent status following the completion of its spinoff from Dean Foods, the company surprised Community Food Share and matched $1.50 for every dollar contributed to Corporate Challenge by its employees. C O Compete to Beat Hunger Corporate Challenge — Record Breaking Results in FY13! L R E P O R T F O R F Y 1 3 3 Where Does the Food Go? Community Food Share’s food distribution program casts the widest net via multiple food distribution points, ensuring that we are providing food assistance to as many people as possible who are in need. In FY13, Community Food Share distributed over 7.5 million meals (1 meal = 1 pound), valued at $12.7 million. All food was distributed free of charge. The food was distributed through our network of 50+ Member Agencies and our own Direct Distribution programs. The Member Agencies form a safety-net partnership for those in need. Community Food Share is the primary source of food for this network, which encompasses nearly all organizations providing food assistance in our service area. Member Agencies include food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, residential treatment homes, and emergency food box programs. Community Food Share is one of only 20 food banks nationwide to distribute food to Member Agencies free of charge. Our Direct Distribution programs help to ensure that food is also being distributed to specific groups of vulnerable populations, including families with children on the School Free Lunch program and low-income seniors. The Face of Need in Our Community There are currently 60,000 people (1 in 6) in Boulder and Broomfield Counties who are living at or below 130% of poverty ($30,615 per year for a family of four). The number of community members in need of food assistance has been steadily increasing during recent years, especially during the recession. The majority of people in need of food assistance are low-income working people, making poverty in our community largely invisible. And, along with poverty goes hunger and food insecurity — a constant struggle to put food on the table each and every day, along with the daunting task of choosing to pay for rent, utilities, medical expenses, or food. Through Feeding Families, 31,901 shopping visits were made to our warehouse in FY13. 4 C O M Feeding Families Warehouse Distribution Program M T Y F O O D Groceries are distributed twice a month at 8 congregate sites in Boulder and Broomfield Counties to our Elder Share members. In FY13, 115,609 meals were distributed to 357 members. S H A R E A N N U A L R E P O R T There With Care’s Tim Ramenofsky restocks the pantry shelves after his shopping trip to CFS, prior to making his rounds to families with children in medical crises. F O R F Eligibility in Feeding Families is consistent with enrollment eligibility for the SNAP and School Free Lunch programs (those living at or below 130% of the poverty level — representing $30,615 annually for a family of four). I Feeding Families is unique in that it provides a “client-select” grocery store shopping experience, rather than providing pre-selected boxes of food. In FY13, an average of 613 families “shopped” weekly at our warehouse, and each family received an average of 76 pounds of food each week. We distributed 2,421,500 pounds of food to 1,363 families (6,241 individuals) through Feeding Families. Typical foods included: fresh produce, milk and dairy products, frozen meats and prepared meals, pinto beans, rice, soups, baby food, and bakery items. N Feeding Families is Community Food Share’s largest Direct Distribution program. Through this program, we provide free nutritious food to families with children in the School Free Lunch programs in the Boulder Valley and St. Vrain Valley school districts. Over 13,000 children (~3,200 families) are enrolled in the School Free Lunch program in the two districts. Each family enrolled in Feeding Families may come to our warehouse weekly. The food that is distributed to our 50+ Member Agencies is ordered from weekly email inventory lists, then pulled, staged, and palletized by our staff and volunteers. The majority of this food is then delivered directly to the agencies, free of charge. Community Food Share is one of 25 Feeding America members, out of 202, that delivers food for free. Food Assistance Referrals Twice a year, Community Food Share updates, prints, and disseminates brochures about where to find food assistance in Boulder and Broomfield Counties. It contains information about our Member Agencies, Boulder and Broomfield County social services, WIC, SNAP, and 211. These brochures are printed in English and in Spanish, and are inserted in each Emergency Food Box that is distributed. We are very happy with your help. Thank you for your time and talent and to the nice personnel. May God bless. 21 INVENTORY T U R N S A Record 21 in FY13! In FY13, Community Food Share’s Operations staff turned our inventory a record 21 times. This is despite operating at over-capacity. The average for Feeding America member food banks is 11 inventory turns per year. Warehouse Coordinator, Dave Richey, unloads a truckload of canned goods. 6 Volunteers— The Backbone of Community Food Share Inventory Turns— In FY13, 2,444 people devoted 34,352 hours to Community Food Share, which is the equivalent of 16.5 full-time staff members. Volunteers worked in every aspect of our operation, including sorting food, repackaging beans, stocking the warehouse, picking-up and delivering food, and a variety of administrative jobs, including our front desk assistants and helping with special events. Volunteers from the community are essential to our operations, from unloading and making deliveries to answering the phones. The policy states: “Community Food Share, wherever feasible, will purchase low sodium canned vegetables, low fat protein foods, whole grain products, and more fresh fruits and vegetables.” New Nutritional Indexing Program — CHOP In FY13, we also implemented an innovative nutritional indexing system, called CHOP (Choosing Healthy Options), as compared to the USDA Food Plate. With this system, items are marked green, yellow, or red (translation: eat frequently, eat moderately, eat sparingly). A similar identification system is being used in local grocery stores and in many other Feeding America food banks. 8 C O STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL POSITION Fiscal year ending June 30, 2013 M Current Liabilities 319,234 Payroll-related Accruals 80,266 Operating Reserve Accounts 628,557 Tenant Security Deposit 12,5000 Capital Reserve Accounts 123,384 Deferred Revenue 37,000 ______________________________________________________________ Accounts Receivable 770 Total Current Liabilities 449,000 ______________________________________________________________ 1,540 LONG TERM LIABILITIES 0 ______________________________________________________________ Pledges Receivable Capital Campaign Pledges 231,834 Grants Receivable 178,853 Food Inventory 272,262 Total Temporarily Restricted Net Assets 7,737,893 357,834 U A Total Permanently Restricted Net Assets 0 ______________________________________________________________ Fixed Assets L Total Fixed Assets; Building and Equipment Total Unrestricted Net Assets N $2,167,038 Net Assets N TOTAL CURRENT ASSETS $449,000 A Deposits & Prepaids 1,344 ______________________________________________________________ TOTAL LIABILITIES S H A R E 47 D Other Liquid Funds O 669,261 F O Construction Draw Y 59,186 T Checking Account I Accounts Payable N Current Assets U LIABILITIES AND NET ASSETS M ASSETS O TOTAL LIABILITIES AND NET ASSETS $8,544,727 _________________________________________ __________________ ________________________________________________________ P TOTAL ASSETS $8,544,727 _________________________________________ __________________ ________________________________________________________ E TOTAL NET ASSETS $8,095,727 ______________________________________________________________ R 6,377,689 R T A Look Ahead… Community Food Share’s New Warehouse F On August 1, 2013, after an extensive renovation, Community Food Share relocated from Niwot to the Colorado Tech Center in Louisville. The new facility is 68,000 square feet, and it includes a custom designed freezer/cooler unit that is 4,250 square feet. O R F Y 1 3 The larger facility will allow Community Food Share to expand the procurement and storage of greater amounts of nutritious food, including fresh produce and frozen product. This will enable us to meet the growing need for food assistance in our community, and enable clients to use scarce resources on other basic needs. We are also anticipating that we will identify and be able to serve additional people in need of food assistance in the eastern part of our service area. Our plans in the new building potentially include an expansion of our Feeding Families Direct Distribution program as well as our Member Agency distribution. However, we are continuing all activities at existing levels for at least six months, as we learn how to best use the significantly increased warehouse floor and equipment. We will then evaluate all programs and make changes as are feasible. Community Food Share will be in this expanded site for the long haul, and will make changes only after thorough assessment. 9 THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR DONORS MEMBER AGENCIES Addiction Recovery Center Anam Chara Attention Homes Boulder County AIDS Project Boulder County Housing Authority Boulder Preparatory High School Boulder Shelter for the Homeless Bridge House Broomfield FISH Calvary Baptist Church of Longmont Children’s House Preschool Cinnamon Park Coal Creek Meals on Wheels Ed & Ruth Lehman YMCA El Comite de Longmont Emergency Family Assistance Association First Congregational Church Good News Center Harvest of Hope Pantry Heritage House Ministries I Have A Dream Foundation Imagine!
