Burnett, Community Outreach/Recruitment Coordinator at 631•758•5200 x140 or cburnett@liheadstart.org SmartBoards for Kids Long Island Head Start has received a generous donation from Teq, one of the largest providers of SMART Board interactive whiteboards in North America. The Farmingdale based company graciously donated six SMART Boards and one SMART Table to the Long Island Head Start center in Patchogue. Teq also donated professional training so that staff members and administrators would be able to maximize their use of the SMART Boards and introduce Head Start parents to the interactive whiteboards. “We are deeply appreciative of Teq’s generosity. Teq’s donation of Smart Boards to our LIHS Patchogue center will bring our children closer to the same pre-school experience as mainstream Long Island preschoolers, which is central to our overall mission,” noted Debrah Garcia, CEO. “We are also introducing parents to the use of SMART Boards as a means of developing their own job skills. This is yet another way that Head Start works to help the entire family reach self-sufficiency.” For children who are growing up in a world dominated by personal computers, smart phones and all things digital, a traditional chalk board is a relic from a past age. It’s hard for them to relate to a surface that neither moves nor interacts with other media. The donation of SMART Boards will also have a strong impact on the parents of Long Island Head Start children and was an equally important part of Teq’s decision to make the donation. Many Long Island Head Start children & families were blessed this holiday season by the generosity of individuals, organizations, and local stores. They received every kind of gift imaginable, from clothing and toys to microwaves, dishes, pots and pans, laundry detergent, paper goods, sheets, towels, and food items. The caring and thoughtfulness of all our donors amaze us. We wish you all a year filled with much joy and happiness. For more information on how you can make a difference in the lives of our families contact Carol Burnett, Community Outreach/Recruitment Coordinator, at (631) 758-5200 X140. Thanks A Bunch!! 5 Around the Classroom All About Me Yoga at Bay Area Jayden Diaz Brentwood Center Yoga instructor Danielle Bonfanti has been providing free yoga classes for the children at the Bay Area Center for over three months. For thirty minutes the class practices breathing techniques, visualizations, yoga postures and relaxations. Yoga encourages healthy life styles, self–esteem and body awareness that will positively impact all aspects of the children’s emotional, physical and spiritual well being. When children learn techniques for self-health, relaxation and a way to connect with themselves and others, they can navigate lifes’ challenges with more ease. Through grants our hope is to expand this program into other Long Island Head Start centers. My name is Jayden Diaz. I am three years old. I attend school at the Brentwood Center. This is my first year in school. My favorite toy to play with in school is Legos. My favorite fruit is strawberries. My favorite season is summer where I love to go to the pool. This has been a really exciting year for me coming to this school. My teacher said that I was very shy at first but I broke out of my shell by the second week. The best thing that happened to me this year was that my dad volunteered at my school during “Take Dad to School Day”. I am really happy to be here where I have lots of friends. I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up but I’m sure Head Start will help me get there. Fatherhood Testimonials Tune in to the National Office of Head Start on the web to hear LIHS father testimonials on the Early Childhood Learning and Knowledge Center (ECLKC) web page entitled Parent and Family Stories. www.eclkc.ohs.acf.hhs.gov green is more than a color Long Island Head Start has launched a Green Initiative Program to teach children, parents, and staff environmentally sound habits to take pride in where they live and connect to the world in a natural way. Barry Hoff’s class at the Southampton Center and Kristina Fosters class at the Riverhead Center have both gone green. The classes have lessons on the importance of water conservation while brushing their teeth. Through experimentation the children learned fourteen gallons of water is used when the water is left running, while only two gallons is used when the water is used sparingly. This lesson has a tremendous impact. Children can take home what they learn in the classroom and teach their families about the importance of conserving. Little steps do make a difference !! Angel Ortiz, a Central Brookhaven Center father, discusses the role of parents as teachers in the home. Angel shares how the Head Start program has inspired him to become a better role model and teacher for his daughter. 6 Laurence Thomas, a single father, discusses the role of parents as teachers in the home. Laurence describes how, after a custody battle for his sons, he became an involved Head Start father who participates regularly as part of a fatherhood initiative which teaches fathers about their rights as parents.
