AnnuAl RepoRt 2 0 11 chairman’s letter Thank you for your continued, generous support of Waveny Care Network throughout a most notable year. Guided always by our mission to provide a comprehensive continuum of healthcare and our vision to provide the highest quality of compassionate, person-centered care, 2011 was an exceptionally exciting year of growth and development for Waveny. Not only did we expand our suite of services to include Waveny Home Healthcare, but we completed significant renovations in the Care Center, celebrated The Village’s 10th anniversary, engaged in a strategic planning process and launched a comprehensive “Point of Service” dining program to enhance the dining experience provided at Waveny. As you may know, over the past few years, both Medicare and the insurance industry have begun to steadily shift reimbursement away from healthcare facilities like Waveny in favor of home-based rehabilitation services. In response, our Board of Directors proactively authorized the exploration – and ultimately the investment of resources – to establish a Home Healthcare Agency in order to meet the growing needs and preferences of older adults in lower Fairfield County, while keeping pace with new government policies and trends. Thanks to Waveny’s stellar reputation for providing quality care and our ability to recruit a talented and experienced staff, I am delighted to report that Waveny Home Healthcare – our newly licensed and certified agency – has been tremendously successful since launch, and is proudly serving a wide and diverse clientele. It has been an honor to serve as your Chairman for the past six months. On behalf of Waveny’s Board, staff, volunteers and all whom we serve, I thank you again for all you do to support us in brightening the lives of those within our care, and championing well-being, dignity and quality of life. Most sincerely, Jay B. Twombly Chairman, Waveny Care Network W ell aware of the greater need for financial assistance as compared to past years, our Swinging for Seniors committee started planning early to guarantee a successful 9th annual event. Due to the eagerness, enthusiasm and dedication of our committee members, volunteers and player participants, all expectations were exceeded and we had our best event to date. With more golf and tennis registrants than ever before, we are proud to report that our 2011 outing raised over $185,000, representing a 17% increase over the prior year. As always, 100% of event proceeds are directed to Waveny’s financial assistance program, which provides financial support to patients and residents who cannot afford the full cost of their care at Waveny Care Center, The Village, New Canaan Inn and our Adult Day Program. Special thanks to golf co-chairs Judy Bentley, Charlie Parker and James Slattery, tennis co-chairs Alice Parker and Sharon Stevenson, and our dedicated raffle coordinator Julianne Grace for their vision and commitment. We extend a heartfelt thank you to all our event supporters, and especially our leading sponsors. 2011 Top SponSorS Platinum SPonSor Friend of Waveny Gold SPonSorS Bentley & Farrell Bourgeon Capital Mgmt Barbara & John Burns Joan F. With close to 200 people in attendance at our annual donor recognition reception, we thanked our many contributors whose support directly helps to further our mission in countless ways. Specially recognized were the bountiful contributions of julianne Grace and the newcomers Club of new Canaan, which exemplify loyal support, involvement and commitment to our organization. A mission-driven role model in philanthropy, Julianne Grace was recognized for her supreme generosity and inspiring depth of involvement within the Waveny organization. In addition to volunteering 12 years of service to the Development Committee and a bounty of work through her annual role as “Swinging for Seniors” raffle chair, Grace is a top annual appeal solicitor each and every year on behalf of Waveny. Waveny’s first female board chair in 2001, Grace served on the board of directors for six years and was an inaugural member of Waveny’s Advisory Council. Her many years of involvement and the quality of her leadership has made a lasting impact upon the lives of those within our care. The Newcomers Club of New Canaan was honored for their long history of support to Waveny and the community at large. Funding from the Newcomers Club has made a significant positive impact upon the quality of life of those served at Waveny. Most notable is their continued support of our therapeutic music and creative arts programs, and devotion to the Care Center’s pledge to offer the most advanced technology and state-of-the-art equipment to our rehabilitation population. Through generous grants, they have helped us acquire vital equipment to pioneer innovative poststroke therapies and enhance the safety with which difficult patient transfers can be made. We are deeply grateful to both honorees and it is our privilege to celebrate their generosity and good works, which have allowed our organization to evolve into a world-class continuum of care. T his year’s annual appeal focuses on enhancing the dining experience enjoyed by our residents, patients and participants. We are delighted to transition to “Point of Service” or “Restaurant Style” dining throughout our entire continuum of care, including the Care Center, The Village and our Adult Day Program. These changes will help us to provide individualized service in cuisine presentation and delivery, while facilitating additional options to accommodate special dietary needs and preferences. Implemented in stages, our overall plan includes: • Distinctive menus featuring a widened variety of fresh and nutritious options • A continental breakfast for early risers and an always-available “Just for You” menu that offers an array of commonly requested a la carte options • Extended dining service times that offer more flexible choices of when to dine. We seek to provide the most pleasing surroundings and the best possible experience in dining, service, selection, and convenience. We are most grateful to all our Annual Appeal donors for their support throughout this important transition. • A trayless dining service with all meals served directly to each patient, resident or participant • Friendly, inviting wait staff eager to take individual orders and provide tableside service annual appeal our grantors C ollaboration between the Fairfield County Community Foundation, the donor-advised Barbara Benton davis Fund, and the rangeley Capital Community Fund at the new Canaan Community Foundation resulted in a bountiful grant to Waveny Care Network to support the scholarship program for participants of Waveny’s Adult Day Program. Monies were used specifically for long-term participants and especially our veterans, who have needed to reduce their normal weekly schedule in the program for financial reasons. Benefitting from this grant just as much as our participants are family caregivers who have regained the personal time needed to work, run a family household or simply relax. the jeniam Foundation selected Waveny Care Network as the recipient of two generous grants to further support the advancement and utilization of technology, both internally and externally. The first grant expanded our clinical team’s access to the “Care Tracker” digital long-term tracking system. Secure and internet-based, the system complements our migration toward electronic documentation, helps to enhance chart accuracy, reduces risk, and streamlines inter-facility communications at Waveny Care Center. More importantly, this increased level of efficiency enables our staff to spend more time with our patients and their families. The second grant was used to fund the purchase of two Apple iPads and associated software for our therapeutic recreation and external outreach programs. Therapeutic recreation programming using the iPad provides a unique array of cognitive, physical and sensory enrichment for people with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and memory loss. The he additional iPad serves as a powerful portable tool that facilitates our Clinical Liaison’s ability to convey the defining points of Waveny’s continuum of care in a highly impactful, visual manner. Funds received through mle Foundation helped Waveny’s main campus to achieve a complete upgrade of its television system, resulting in improved television reception and programming choices for our patients and residents. The new Canaan Community Foundation awarded us with generous funding for several programs. the Foundation provided funds, along with donor-advised monies from the joan F. dionne Foundation and rein Family Fund, to replace our Adult Day Program’s ten year-old van used to shuttle program participants within our transportation area of New Canaan, Darien, Wilton, Norwalk and Stamford. The upkeep of our Adult Day Program’s dedicated transportation fleet is of the utmost importance to our program’s mission to offer day services to older adults in New Canaan and the surrounding communities. We are extremely grateful for the gift awarded from the rotary Club of new Canaan, which was used to partially fund the purchase of a new electric metal hopper spreader for our plow truck to be used for snow removal and spreading sand and salt in our parking lots. To help ensure the maximum levels of comfort, independence and security enjoyed by those we serve, a grant awarded by the new Canaan Sewing Group was used to purchase and install emergency lighting in the restrooms located in the Gladys T. Perkins Community Room and on “Main Street” at The Village. These areas service our Adult Day Program population, residents with memory loss at The Village, geriatric assessment patients, visitors, staff, families and volunteers. the workPlace, inc. granted generous funding for a number of training programs designed to further develop, educate and enrich the capabilities of our front line staff while facilitating professional growth and development. Monies were used to fund interactive training programs including, “Person Centered Care for the Person with Dementia: Recognizing and Responding to Distress.” Continuing its annual funding of Waveny, the Southwestern Connecticut agency on aging provided monies for a State-sponsored aide position to work with our Adult Day participants with Alzheimer’s disease. our contributors O ur gratitude is extended to those listed below for gifts and pledges received in support of Waveny Care Network between January 1 and December 31, 2011. Doubling in size since the event’s inception, this year’s event featured 32 teams and 64 players playing at four site locations. The outing’s continued growth and success is due in large part to the efforts of event committee members in securing our paddle sites, player participants, sponsors, prizes, food and beverages. The tournament included “A” and “B” flight rounds held concurrently at the Country Club of New Canaan, Field Club of New Canaan, Wee Burn Country Club and Waveny Park. Event sponsors, Bob’s Sports of New Canaan, Earth Garden of Wilton, Diamond Deli of Norwalk, Karl Chevrolet of New Canaan, Walter Stewart’s Market, and Stewart’s Spirits of New Canaan provided food and beverages, prizes, gift certificates and paddle balls for the 32 participating teams. Event finals were held at the Country Club of New Canaan and featured an after-party celebration inside the club’s paddle hut. annual paddle event consolidated financial statement Interest Expense 1% Depreciation 6% Medicare 19% Medicaid 10% Private Pay & Insurance 71% Medicare beneficiaries and Medicaid recipients accounted for 29% of the Network’s average daily census. W aveny remains steadfast in its commitment to provide the highest quality of care for older adults in New Canaan and its surrounding communities. To deliver upon this mission, Waveny incurred a 1.1% decrease in fiscal 2011 patient service revenue over the prior year in order to address vital renovations in all resident rooms at the Care Center. To accommodate this initiative, two rooms remained offline at a time for virtually the entire year, resulting in a reduction of revenues in fiscal 2011. As a result of both the Federal and State government reimbursement rates failing to keep up with inflation, and given Waveny Care Center’s mission to serve those in our care without regard to their source of payment, patient and revenue services were significantly offset ($3,222,537) by the amount of reimbursement that the Medicare and Medicaid programs discount their payments to us. Fortunately, the cost of this uncompensated care is partially offset by the continued generosity and support from our benefactors – through the Annual Appeal, Swinging for Seniors and other grants and contributions, the network received a total of $657,800 in philanthropy during fiscal 2011. Reflecting our ongoing commitment to ensuring quality care through a skilled and experienced staff, wages and Medical Supplies, Drugs, Food & Other 26% Salaries, Wages & Benefits for Employees 67% Reflecting our continued investment in high quality care, labor costs accounted for 67% of our expenses. benefits combined for 67% of our total operating expenses, an increase of .9% over fiscal 2010. Our “medical supplies, drugs, food, and other” expense category increased 6.4% over the previous fiscal year, due to the change in dining services for a full year in fiscal 2011 compared to three months in fiscal 2010. We continue to see a decline in our reliance on outside nursing services, and savings generated through our purchasing program have enabled us to use our limited resources much more efficiently. This represents our continued commitment to hire and retain the best and brightest at competitive compensation packages while maintaining an industry-leading resident-to-staff ratio. As of September 30, 2011, the Network’s endowment holdings were $9,253,653 – a 1.7% decrease in fiscal 2011. During fiscal 2011 the Network retired $399,500 in long-term debt, and as of September 30, 2011 the balance of the long-term debt was $5,376,793. The Network sustained an operating deficit ($602,548) in fiscal 2011. Again, this was in large part due to lost revenue throughout Care Center renovations along with a drop in the average census at New Canaan Inn. We continue to honor our mission and those in our care by providing the highest quality of care through the most efficient means possible, while at the same time acting as responsible stewards of contributions from our loyal benefactors. As Waveny Care Network continues to move forward, I want to take this final opportunity to remind each and every one of us of the unique opportunities and proud accomplishments we have shared. Together, we have celebrated milestones, launched programs, built bridges, nurtured collaboration and cultivated partnerships, all while delivering upon our mission to champion therapeutic quality care, dignity and independence. During my five years with the Waveny organization, I have come to understand and fully appreciate that Waveny Care Network is more than a network of healthcare services – it is a network of people with a shared interest in improving the lives of others.
