ATC Community Service
On September 9, 2006 myself and a few colleagues from the orthopaedic
clinic that I work participated in the 1st Annual Life Fest Health Fair at First
Baptist Church in Wichita Falls, TX. This event involved various booths that
shared valuable health, wellness, and safety information. The booth our
clinic set up included a Biodex Balance evaluation. Each participant would
have to balance on the Biodex for 30 seconds on both feet while trying to
keep a cursor in the middle of the screen. The participant would receive a
score which was then compared to the normative for their age group. Each
one was given a sheet with their score and the normative. The evaluation
was to help possibly determine potential fall victims. Throughout the day we
saw over 100 people ranging from age 16 to age 81. I believe this was a
huge success in showing the community how athletic trainers could help
identify potential fall victims and get them the help they need.

Math, Science, and U Conference (MSU)
On Saturday, November 18, Midwestern State University hosted the
“Math, Science, and U” conference for junior high girls. The purpose of this
gathering is to encourage and inspire young girls to pursue their interests
and future careers in the areas of math and science. Jennifer Lancaster,
Director of Athletic Training Education, and Kendall Goldberg, Senior Athletic Training Student, gave a presentation about athletic training and how
science is used in this profession. After providing a description of what athletic trainers do, Jennifer and Kendall helped students label a picture and do
basic palpations for the bones of the lower leg and foot. Then each student
received a tube sock. As one student wore their sock, a partner was responsible for drawing the underlying bones of the leg and foot onto the sock.
Following this activity, muscles and basic actions of the ankle were discussed, and a few therapeutic exercises were demonstrated. The girls were
given the opportunity to try some of the therapeutic exercises before concluding the workshop with a question and answer session. This presentation was given to three different groups of junior high girls, their school sponsors, and current MSU faculty and students. It was a great opportunity to
share about what athletic training professionals can do and what kind of
education they complete. We received an excited response from the participants, who were eager to take part and ask questions. Even school sponsors decided to jump in and experience the activities with their students.
