Athletic Advisory Committee

Minutes
Present: Alissa Sustarsic, Nancie Bourne, Kelli Colborne, Virginia Leach, Melanie Wagner, Patti Weasel,
Donna MacDonald, Allison Rehbaum, Debra Dabney, Steve Husebye, Mike Matulia, Tammie Glover
Absent: Andrea Zito, Josh Holt
Mike Matulia called the meeting to order at 2:00 pm.
1. Welcome and Committee Chair Selection: Discussed nominees and decided to come back to this at
end of meeting.
2. Committee structure and purpose: Reviewed members and what area each represents. Discussed
purpose of committee (acting as advisors to Athletic Department). Examples of past suggestions
from committee that have been implemented were e-mailing progress reports and getting nonathlete students more involved (fan-appreciation day, game management project for sports fitness
class, articles in LSCC newspaper, student trainers, student assistants for office and events).
3. Athletic Report: Discussed end of year report, which shows team and athlete achievements.
Pointed out highlights and summed up each section of report. Mike suggested that non-athlete
students need to be recommended for Academic Team awards also. Debra Dabney reminded the
committee that Student athletes helped with MLK run/walk and MLK luncheon cleanup.
4. Update on athletic budget and fundraising: Discussed decrease in budget and athletic fundraisers.
Golf Tournament raised money to cover textbooks. Saving money on textbooks by recycling books.
Recommended by committee to use teacher sites to obtain book lists and ISBN numbers to get
books earlier and at cheapest rates on-line.
5. Academic Monitoring Policy and Procedures: Reviewed progress reports, purpose, good feedback
from instructors. (Able to get extra help early for students who need to improve their grades.)
Discussed Athletic Handbook and Athlete Orientation. Drug tests done randomly 4-5 times per
semester. Alyssa Sustarsic suggested adding specific instruction for no texting in class to our cell
phones off policy.
6. Upcoming Events: Fan Appreciation Night (Oct 7, 7:00pm Voleyball game-free giveaways), Fan
Appreciation Night/local high schools and middle schools (Oct 28, 7:00pm Volleyball game), Sports
Leadership Program (Nov), BBQ Cook-off & Craft Show Fundraiser (Spring – professional and
restaurant divisions), Sports Leadership Program (Spring).
7. State Athletic Report & Federal Athletic Report: These reports are in process now.
8. Committee Chair: Elected Steve Husebye unanimously.
