CourseDescription:Introductiontohumanevolution
throughthestudyofvariation,genetics,adaptation,
livingprimates,thefossilrecord,andtherelationshipbetweenbiologyandbehavior.
FoundationalStudiesProgram:BoiseState’sFoundationsProgramprovidesundergraduateswitha
broad-basededucationthatspanstheentireuniversityexperience.ANTH101Biological
Anthropologysatisfies3creditsoftheFoundationalProgram’sDisciplinaryLens-Natural,
PhysicalandAppliedSciences(DLN)requirement.ANTH101andANTH101L,takentogether,
satisfies4creditsoftheFoundationalProgram’sDisciplinaryLens-Natural,PhysicalandApplied
Sciences(DLN)withlabrequirement.ThiscoursesupportsthefollowingUniversityLearning
Outcomes,alongwithavarietyofothercourse-specificgoals.

scientificinquirytothinkcriticallyaboutandsolvetheoreticalandpracticalproblemsaboutphysical
structuresandprocesses.
Biologicalanthropologyintroducesstudentstounderstandinghumansandourclosestrelatives
fromanevolutionaryperspective.Studentswillusethescientificmethodtoacquireandevaluate
data,theoryandmethodspertainingtothestudyofbiologicalvariationinlivinghumans,genetic
inheritance,comparisonsbetweennon-humanprimatespecies,thefossilrecordofour
ancestors,andrelationshipsbetweenbiology,ecology,andbehavior.
Aftersuccessfulcompletionofthiscourse,youwillbeableto:
• Understandandapplythescientificmethodbyformulatingandtestinghypotheses
• Understandprinciplesofgeneticinheritanceandevolutionbynaturalselection
• Understandcomparativeprimateanatomyandbehavior
• Understandhumanevolutionaryhistoryincludingpopulationresponsesand
behavioraladaptationstoclimatechange

CourseRequirements:Gradeswillbebasedonacombinationof:homeworkassignments,threeexams,
labassignments,apaper,andattendance.
1. Homework:Youwillhavehomeworkassignmentsontheblackboardwebsite.Thesehomework
questionscomedirectlyfromthechapterandmayincludequestionsonthingswehavenot
discussedinclass.Ihighlyrecommendthatyoureadthechapterbeforeansweringthe
homeworkquestions.
2. Exams:Therewillbethreeexams,oneforeachsectionoftheclass.Examsarenotcumulative,
butyoumayneedtodrawonconceptsfromprevioussections.Thethirdexamwilloccurduring
finalsweek.Examinationswillconsistofamixofobjective-formatquestions(multiple-choice)
andshort-answeressayquestions.Questionswillcovermaterialfromlecturesandassigned
readings.
3. Paper:Youwillwritea3-4pageresearchpaperonaprimategroup.Moredetailswillbe
providedonblackboard.ThisassignmentisdueMarch10th.
4. Attendance:Youareexpectedtoattendclass.Absenceswillnegativelyimpactyourfinalgrade.
