Unit 1: Intro to Geography
In our studies we will recognize the difference between Physical and Human Geography.
Basically there are rocks, soil, climate, and natural landscape versus human activities like soccer,
rice farming, and cultural landscape.
Where?
- Map
- Cartography
- Space versus place
- Site/physical
- Situation or relative location
- Absolute location/mathematical location
- Toponym
- Latitude (equator) versus longitude (meridians)
- International Date Line
- Prime Meridian
- Greenwich Mean Time / time zones
- Babylonians
- Aristotle, Eratosthenes, Ptolemy
- Scale (large/small)
- Projection(shape, distance, relative size, direction)
- Maps – Mercator, Goode’s homolosine, Robinson
 Map types
 Thematic
 Statistical
 Cartogram
 Dot
 Choropleth
 Isoline
- GPS, GIS, remote sensing
Why?
 Cultural landscape (attributes& built) /regional studies versus natural environment
- Jean Brunhes
- Paul Vidal de la Blache
- Carl Sauer
- Humboldt/Ritter – environmental determinism
- Huntington’s Thesis – climate (haves/have nots)
- Possibilism – cultural values (resources)
- Koppen system
- Ecumene / non-ecumene
- Environmental modification (Netherlands, New York, Boston, New Orleans, most recently
Florida)
 Distribution
- Density/frequency
- Agricultural
- Arithmetic
- Physiological
- Dispersion/Concentration (cluster/disperse)
- Pattern (linear, centralized, random)
 Globalization
- Space-time compression / trend => shrinking
- Accessibility, connectivity, network
- Friction of distance, distance decay
- Uneven development – MDC’s/LDC’s
 Diffusion
- Hearth
- Relocation
- Expansion
 Hierarchical
 Stimulus
 Contagious
 Intervening Obstacle
 Intervening Opportunity
 Region
 Formal/uniform
 Functional/nodal
 Perceptual/vernacular
