Ambassador McNeil
flies in to celebrate
CATHERINE McNeil will fly
into Sydney next week to celebrate
her appointment as Kookai’s
new ambassador and to do a
shoot for Vogue.
The New York-based model (right),
who of late has been landing campaign
after campaign for labels such as
Prada, Christian Dior Eyewear and
DKNY, will attend a runway show and
after-party for the Australian brand
Kookai on August 20 at CarriageWorks.
Fashion hears the Queensland
catwalk star has also been
commissioned to shoot for Vogue
Australia while she’s here and
that British model boyfriend
Miles Langford will accompany
her on the trip.
With a few days of rest and
recreation scheduled, the beauty
may even be planning a visit north
with her beau to introduce him
to the family.

FOR
Designs on Bali
Leather look
A FEW years ago if you
mentioned the words ‘‘Bali’’ and
‘‘fashion’’, a vision of beerdrinking Aussies in Bintang
singlets and rubber thongs
instantly came to mind.
Thanks in part to the growing
number of Australian designers
running businesses over there,
the Indonesian island is now a
hub for emerging fashion talent.
So it makes sense that this
year it will launch the inaugural
Fashion Festival Bali and you can
bet we’ll be fairly well
represented. Australian brands
Pared Eyewear, Triangl
swimwear and Shakuhachi
(pictured) have signed on to take
part in the week-long event
which will kick off on August 24
with a party hosted by Tatler
magazine. Fashion hears Alexia
Blake, Laura Csortan and
Casey Burgess are among the
Aussies going over for the trade
event, while Zimmermann and
Camilla are also rumoured to be
in talks with organisers.
CARL Kapp says his
new collection might
have taken a more
relaxed direction this
season but it’s not to be
underestimated. The
designer, best known
for his bold evening
wear and tailored
pieces, says his new
relaxed separates and
daywear needs to be
touched and seen up
close to be appreciated.
‘‘What I’m most
excited about are the
deerskin leather
pieces. It really feels
incredible and I got it
from the same
supplier which
supplies Hermes.
They’ve been working
with them for many
years,’’ he says.
‘‘There are some very
special dresses and you
can’t really tell they’re
leather until you see the
garments in real life and
you realise how amazing
it is that you can actually
drape leather like that.’’
Kapp’s new collection
is in store now.
SASS
S
he’s an effortlessly
cool Brit with a Hollywood boyfriend and
both the modelling
and acting world at her
21-year-old feet.
They’re Australia’s fashion tour
de force whose wares have draped
the backs of celebrities including
Kate Moss and Rihanna for the
past 14 years.
So it’s no shock that creative
genius was made when Suki Waterhouse and sass & bide’s Heidi Middleton and Sarah-Jane Clarke teamed
up to launch the label’s new S/S’13
collection Wintergate.
‘‘Suki is a strong and free spirit,’’ says
Middleton. ‘‘She has the creative energy we love
at sass & bide.’’
The new collection comes at a pivotal point for
the design duo who in 2011 teamed up with retail
giant Myer. The rest of this year will see it tackle
the US with a show planned for New York
Fashion Week next month and the launch of its
first American retail store.
‘‘We have a strong love and renewed energy for
New York. We just shot the Suki campaign there,
we have the show coming up and the new store
opening later this year,’’ says Middleton.
The design duo says Waterhouse is the perfect
face for the new range. With a portfolio that
includes work with H&M and Tatler magazine
and a highly publicised romance with actor
Bradley Cooper, Waterhouse has now firmly
established herself as a global ‘‘It girl’’.

Palermo to visit

The New York socialite
turned reality TV star will
fly into Sydney later this
month to launch the
spring/summer
collections at Chatswood
Chase shopping centre.
