The goal of nature is to build better mice” - Author Unknown Course Description Grade 10 science covers a wide variety of scientific topics from each of the major science disciplines. There are sections on ecosystems and animal diversity, chemistry and chemical applications, physics and motion, and weather. The course is designed to continue building upon the idea of the scientific process, as well as to help foster the practice of scientific inquiry. Through various research, presentation, and practical assignments, students will develop a better understanding of the world around them through the scientific lens. Course Timeline Unit 1: Dynamics of Ecosystems Unit 2: Chemistry in Action Unit 3: In Motion Unit 4: Weather Dynamics Textbook Ritter, B et. al. (2001). Science 10. Nelson Thomson Learning. Scarborough, Ontario. Assessment Course Work 70% Final Exam 30 % Academic Dishonesty – any act of cheating, plagiarizing, or copying of work by a student will result in stiff penalties. The first offense will be a choice of zero on the assignment or a redo at my convenience, as well as a letter sent home to your parents. The second offense will be an automatic zero, with a referral to administration for any further discipline. This year we will be implementing new assessment guidelines which are designed to help you the student discover which areas you are excelling in and which areas could use improvement. As part of this new approach, every assignment, project, quiz and test will go towards calculating your overall course mark. You will also be given a letter grade that corresponds to your classroom behavior and overall learning abilities. As a result of the new practices being used this year, we will have many discussions about how each piece of work will be marked, and where you currently stand in your understanding of the course material. There is no midterm exam in this course. All students will be required to write the final exam, which will cover material from the entire semester. Students who miss more than 10 classes without given permission will be removed from the course. As long as you are attending class, this will not be an issue for you. Warning letters will also be sent home after 5 and 8 missed classes. *There are no supplemental exams. **Late Assignments – all assignments are due by the date set. Failure to do so will require you to talk to me outside of class time. I will accept assignments for assessment up to the date in which I hand the assignment back. After this date the incomplete assignment will receive a grade of 0, but may still require completion to satisfy the course requirements. Keys to Success… - Be prepared for class - Complete all assignments and readings by the due date - Study for tests and exams - Come in for extra help when needed
