Your Charitable Legacy As we confront the challenges of the future, we know that the generosity of those who assist UMKC Orthodontics, through the Rinehart Foundation, will make all the difference in our success. That is why we seek your support in a very special way. Charitable or educational organizations can often play an important role when setting up your estate plan. Providing support for UMKC Department of Orthodontics, through a planned gift to the Rinehart Foundation, helps with our long term commitment to orthodontic education and research and may also provide tax and/or financial benefits to you and your family. For example, with a specific bequest in your will or trust, you can designate a dollar amount or a percentage bequest of your estate to be distributed to a particular fund of the Rinehart Foundation which supports UMKC Orthodontics. A beneficiary designation on your life insurance policy or IRA can also be a very simple way to show your future support. The IRA charitable rollover is an option if you are 70 ½ or older. You may give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to UMKC without having to pay income taxes on the money. Some donors also choose to help us in one additional and important way. That is, they let us know that they have included a gift provision to UMKC Orthodontics in their estate plan. They know their provisions will be kept confidential and they can change them at any time should their personal circumstances change. The Rinehart Foundation respects each donor’s right to privacy and/ or anonymity. But, letting others know that you’ve made a planned gift can influence other UMKC alumni or friends who may also want to make a planned gift of their own someday. We hope you will consider making a planned gift to make a difference at UMKC Orthodontics. We would be pleased to share some ideas and confer with you in your planning. Most of all, we would appreciate having the opportunity to express our gratitude to you for creating such a special gift. If you would like to learn more about how you can make part of your estate a lasting legacy at UMKC’s School of Dentistry, please contact Hilary Wheat, Director of Development, School of Dentistry at 816-235-2173. Or, you can simply write your request on the response card included with the UMKC BONDS Newsletter. We can help you and your advisors plan a gift for tomorrow that will help our future residents as well as you and your family. Dean Marsha Pyle pointed out the pride UMKC School of Dentistry has for the Orthodontic Department and the legacy of Dr. Thompson. 2014 UMKC Orthodontist of the Decade, Dr. Donald J. Thompson, to Retire From Teaching Dr. Jim Osborne presents Dr. Don Thompson the UMKC Orthodontist of the Decade Award A 100+ crowd gathered together over lunch to honor Dr. Don Thompson on Thursday, April 10, 2014. Dr. Jim Osborne, codirector of UMKC Orthodontic Clinics, with Dr. Thompson, officiated the ceremony, which awarded Don the title of 2014 UMKC Orthodontist of the Decade. Don has officially announced that he will retire from teaching in December 2014. Dr. Thompson graduated from University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry in 1961. He attended St. Louis University School of Dentistry and graduated from their post-graduate orthodontic program in 1965. Don’s brother, Gene, was at the time the co-director of the UMKC School of Dentistry Graduate Orthodontic Program. Gene “convinced” Dr. Don to join the Graduate Orthodontic faculty immediately after graduation. From that time, he has been associated with the UMKC program in one form or another. He has been a teacher, a clinical instructor, a practice management consultant, a fund raiser, a search committee member, and, most of all, an inspiration to all the residents that have passed through our program. He has been an excellent example of what we all want to achieve in the profession of orthodontics. Don has served as program director (1997-1998), co-program director (2003-2007), and the clinical director from 2007 to the present. He was responsible for the CODA accreditation site visit in 2003 and helped Drs. Iwasaki and Nickel with the 2010 site visit. While continuing his university and private practice responsibilities, Dr. Thompson served as president of the Southwestern Orthodontic Society. He is a diplomat of the ABO, and is an untiring supporter of the residents. In 2008, he was co-recipient of the D.B. Wade teaching award from the ABO College of Diplomates. Thank you Dr. Thompson for the sacrifices you have made to ensure that the UMKC SOD Graduate Orthodontic program upholds its stellar legacy. We will miss you! 3 Resident Research: Dr. Michael Olsen The Effect of Phosphoric Acid Etch in Conjunction with Self-Etching Primer on Enamel Surfaces and Resultant Orthodontic Bracket Bond Strength This study examined the methods of preparing the enamel surface for orthodontic bracket adhesion in overcoming pellicle and possible fluid contamination from pre-bonding cleaning techniques and the effect of these treatments on the enamel surface and resultant bond strength. Shear bond strength testing, Raman linear mapping, and scanning electron microscopy was used to evaluate shear bond strength, depth of resin interface, and surface and cross-sectional characteristics respectively. Based on an analysis of variance (α=.05), there was a significant effect of pretreatment enamel conditioning prior to self-etching primer application on shear bond strength. This difference was found to exist solely between the pumice prophylaxis group and the 34% phosphoric acid etch group. No difference was found to exist across all groups with regards to depth of resin penetration. Scanning electron microscopy showed no significant differences in enamel surface or resin/enamel interface characteristics. Results suggest that enamel cleaning techniques prior to SEP application are unnecessary and even deleterious to bond strength and resin penetration. 4 Dr. Natalia Henbest Orthodontic Bracket Bond Strength and Resin Composite Adhesive Degree of Conversion Associated with Type of Curing Unit and Total Energy This study examined the effect of light curing sources on shear bond strength and degree of conversion of orthodontic resin composite adhesive as function of type of curing unit and total energy, and it evaluated the correlation between shear bond strength and degree of conversion. Shear bond strength testing and micro-Raman spectra was collected and measured at 5k, 10k and 15k mJ/cm2 of total energy delivered to the orthodontic adhesive. Based on an analysis of variance (α=.05), there was no significant effect of type of curing source on shear bond strength; however, there was a significant effect of total energy, with shear bond strength increasing as energy increased across curing units. For degree of conversion there was a significant effect of curing unit with plasma arc (PA) producing higher degree of conversion than light-emitting diode (LED) or quartz tungsten halogen (QTH), which were not significantly different from each other. There was also a significant effect of total energy on degree of conversion with a significant increase between 5k to 10k mJ/cm2. There was a positive moderate overall correlation between shear bond strength and degree of conversion. Results of this study suggest that the PA curing unit is more efficient at polymerization (degree of conversion) of orthodontic resin composite adhesive. However, there is no difference in shear bond strength produced when using PA, LED or QTH curing sources for orthodontic bracket bonding procedures when equal total energy is delivered to the adhesive. Dr. Adam Reynolds Voluntary Teeth Clenching During Physical Exercise in Natural Environment: Prevalence and Gender Differences Voluntary teeth clenching (VTC) has been researched with respect to performance enhancement, but little evidence has verified its prevalence. This study’s objective was to determine if VTC occurred during exercise in a natural environment. Secondarily, if differences in VTC existed based on gender and exercise type were investigated. Methods: Ambulatory surface electromyography (EMG) recorders were used to measure activities in the masseter and temporalis muscles and detect VTC during leg extension and general weight-lifting exercises in 7 male and 10 female subjects recruited from UMKC soccer teams. All subjects gave informed consent to participate in IRB-approved study protocols. Laboratory surface EMG recording during static and dynamic biting tasks established linear regression relations between EMG:biteforce for each subject. Then subject-specific thresholds for VTC ranging from 5-80% of a 20 N bite-force (T20N) were applied to detect and measure VTC in ambulatory data. Duty factors (DF=time clenching/total recording time, %) were compared for each VTC threshold and gender/exercise/muscle combination by simple test effect. Statistical significance was set at p<.05 with a Bonferroni correction. Results: VTC was shown by all subjects at a threshold of ≤5%T20N, by 47% of subjects at a threshold of 50%T20N, and by 29% of subjects at a threshold of 80%T20N. Females tended to have a higher DF at all thresholds during weight-lifting (highest DF at 5%T20N: 5.8%), while males tended to have higher DF during leg extensions (highest DF at 5%T20N: 7.1%). Gender differences in DF were significant during weight-lifting at all thresholds except at 80%T20N and during leg extensions at levels t≤25%T20N; and showed larger effect sizes for standardized leg extension compared to general weight-lifting exercises. Conclusions: Low level clenching was common during weight bearing exercises. Prevalence depended on threshold magnitudes defining clenching. There were gender, exercise-type and muscle differences in VTC. Final Comprehensive Exams Graduating residents and attending faculty enjoyed a sumptuous lunch at The Bristol before heading back to UMKC to complete the day’s examinations. It’s always a grind to get ready for final Comprehensive Exam Day, which was held in December 2014. Drs. Natalia Henbest, Michael Olsen, and Adam Reynolds did a stellar job in preparing their cases for the all-day oral exam. The Reynolds are now living in St. Louis. 7 Philanthropic Support for UMKC Orthodontics Takes Many Forms Dr. Don Thompson Endowed Professorship ($917,878) As you are probably aware, there is an extreme shortage of orthodontic educators, and UMKC is no exception to this crisis. As a result of your generosity, we were pleased to be able to establish the Dr. Don Thompson Endowed Professorship. Our goal is to increase the fund to the level of Chair, requiring an additional $750,000. The interest from this fund will support a much-needed full-time faculty salary line in the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics similar to the Leo A. Rogers Endowed Chair currently held by Dr. Laura Iwasaki. Dr. Thompson will be retiring this year and we’d like to honor him through a big financial push from alums to complete this project with a roar!!!! The Department Discretionary Fund ($2,237) The funds from this account support the daily activities of the department. This includes the purchasing of equipment such as printer/scanners, the patient sign-in station, the graduation dinner, alumni reception at AAO, off-setting costs of travel by residents to meetings and speakers to our program, and subsidizing educational activities of staff. Secchi The Choteau Room hosted approximately 60 orthodontists during the Thursday– Friday Orthodontic lectures given by Dr. Antonino Secchi (pictured with green tie), clinical assistant professor, Department of Orthodontics, University of Pennsylvania. The focus of Dr. Secchi’s Thursday lecture was on the “Complete Clinical Orthodontic System: A Review of Treatment Mechanics.” On Friday, the theme of the lecture was “Skeletal Diagnosis of Transverse Discrepancies and Early Treatment.” Orthodontic staff were once again treated to an entertaining and informative CE program by Dr. Rosemary Bray. 10 The Strength of Our Program Rests in Our Part-Time Clinical Faculty We want everyone to know how fortunate we are at UMKC Orthodontics to have dedicated clinical instructors to help mentor our residents. Thank you to all who give so generously of their time. UMKC Orthodontic Faculty News Dr. Jim Osborne (right) has recently increased his commitment at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and now shares duties with Dr. Don Thompson (left) as Director of the Graduate Orthodontic Clinic. In addition to clinical teaching in the Advanced Education Program in Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics, Jim is now also working with Dr. Ingrid Reed (Director, Pre-doctoral Program in Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics; middle) to enhance the predoctoral program. Dr. Reed has just announced that she will be retiring in January 2015. Thank you Ingrid for your dedication to teaching at UMKC. And to all our faculty, we are proud of your work for the advancement of orthodontic education. UMKC Orthodontics Welcomes New Faculty Member, Dr. Shankar Venugopalan BDS (2004, Tamil Nadu Medical University); DMSc Ortho (2014, Harvard); PhD (2010, TAMU Baylor) We are pleased that Dr. Rengasamy Venugopalan has agreed to uproot himself from the east coast and join our department as an assistant professor. It’s not Shankar’s first time to live in the middle of the U.S. Before moving to Harvard in 2010, where he completed his orthodontic residency in 2014, Shankar was at Baylor College of Dentistry where he completed his PhD. Dr. Venugopalan will have responsibilities for teaching didactic courses to dental students and orthodontic residents, as well as supervise in the undergraduate orthodontic clinic and laboratory. Shankar’s research interests are in the area of enamel proteins. These proteins are a current interest in dental research given that proteins at the dental enamel junction can be activated by acids or radiation. Significant clinical consequences occur when these proteins are activated, and are the likely causes of leakage around composite restorations, or separation of enamel from the dentin-enamel junction consequent to radiation therapy for oral cancers. Thank you Dr. Rengasamy Venugopalan for agreeing to be part of the UMKC Ortho Team! Don Thompson (DDS ’61, St. Louis U. Dr. Iwasaki Speaks at the 2014 Moyers Symposium UMKC Orthodontics was well represented at the 2014 Moyers Symposium. While in Ann Arbor, Mich., Dr. Laura Iwasaki, Leo Rogers Chair, was a lead speaker of the 2-day Moyers Symposium, held annually during the month of February. The title of her presentation was “The Speed of Teeth in Orthodontics: Mechanical Limitations and Enhancements.” It may be a bit of a surprise to some that UMKC Department of Orthodontics is the leading institution in the world concerning clinical trials to determine the effects of mechanical stress, protein expression, and genetics on tooth movement. Thank you, Laura, for carrying the UMKC flag as a leader in orthodontic research. AADR in Charlotte, NC & IADR, Capetown, South Africa This March UMKC Department of Orthodontics was well represented at the American Association for Dental Research annual meeting, held in Charlotte, NC. Dr. Iwasaki was very busy at the meeting, with a general session presentation titled “Human Craniofacial form and Jaw Mechanics: a longitudinal study.” Drs. Emily Taylor (R) and Whitney DeForest (L) participated in this project, which studied jaw mechanics in children as they grew into adolescence. Dr. Iwasaki also was an invited speaker at a symposium for “Biomarkers in Gingival Crevicular Fluid (GCF): Current Paradigm Shifts in Dentistry.” Laura’s job was to present the current data on GCF biomarkers during tooth movement. 12 Pictured with the CFB Executive are the 2014 recipients of Sarnat and Craniofacial Biology Awards. Dr. Laura Iwasaki (far left) completed her duties on the executive as past- president. UMKC 4th year dental student Kelsey Riffel (3rd from right) was a co-winner of the Craniofacial Biology Group Award. Drs. Iwasaki and Nickel supervised the project which was a combined effort of Ms. Riffel and Ms. Danielle Leeper, who is also a 4th year UMKC dental student. And at the IADR Annual in Cape Town, South Africa Drs. Nickel and Iwasaki had administrative as well as presentation responsibilities in Cape Town, South Africa. Both presented research papers based on data gathered from 71 individuals, who were asked to carry ambulatory recorders which measured masticatory muscle activities during day and sleep times. Dr. Nickel presented a paper titled “Masticatory Muscle Duty Factors in TMD Diagnostic Groups” describing how TMD diagnostic subgroups differ in how much the jaw muscles are used. Dr. Iwasaki’s paper, “TMD Diagnostic Group Differences in Muscle Activation During Biting,” demonstrated diagnostic group differences in muscle activation for standardized loads applied to the mandible. Also at the meeting was Ms. Kelsey Riffel, who is a 4th year dental student. Ms. Riffel presented a project she and Ms. Danielle Leeper completed under the supervision of Drs. Iwasaki and Nickel. In a poster titled “Gender Differences in Jaw Muscle Duty Factors During Leg-Extension Exercises,” Kelsey and Danielle were able to demonstrate gender differences in how the masticatory muscles are activated during physical exercise. The project was based on data collected by Adam Reynolds (ORT ’13) for his MS thesis. Ms. Riffel was awarded a 2014 AADR BLOC Travel Grant Award, and was co-winner of the Craniofacial Biology Group Award. Drs. Iwasaki and Nickel Receive Commissions as Kentucky Colonels Drs. Nickel and Iwasaki Participate on Councils for the AAO & AAOF UMKC figures prominently on the administrative bodies for the AAO and AAOF. Dr. Jeff Nickel serves on the American Association of Orthodontists Council for Scientific Affairs (COSA). COSA acts as a body to gather the information so that the AAO can make informed decisions concerning policy as it relates to standards of practice. In recent years, the AAO has asked COSA to provide data concerning the standard of care related to the routine use of CBCT and the effects of bisphosphonates on craniofacial health and treatment; in addition, COSA reviews abstracts and submissions for AAO scientific presentations and awards. Dr. Laura Iwasaki is now the Vice Chair of the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation Planning and Awards Review Committee (PARC). This committee is charged by the AAOF to adjudicate grants in support of orthodontic research. Each year, PARC recommends awards which collectively exceed $500,000. These monies support research projects throughout the U.S. and Canada. This is an extremely important activity, which helps university faculty in their research endeavors, and makes it more likely that faculty can attain tenure at their respective institutions. It also supports research that directly affects the orthodontic profession. Thank you Dr. Iwasaki for taking on this leadership role of PARC. Some of the members of COSA: (L-R) Drs.
