AUSTIN 6/1/09 Most of what we know about Greek art comes from the pictures they painted on their pottery. The Archaic period is identified by influences from foreign trading partners and naturalistic representations of the human figure. Athenian vases of the second half of the sixth century B.C. provide a wealth of images that exhibit numerous aspects of Greek culture, including funerary rites, daily life, athletics, warfare, religion, and mythology. “Dionysus in a Sailboat,” c. 550-521 BCE Archaic Art (600-480 BCE) Description: The piece featured here is a black-figured kylix (drinking cup) from the Archaic Period. In black-figured vase painting the black forms stood out against a reddish clay background. This scene may be the earliest instance in which an object (the sail) was presented realistically rather than in some stylized manner. You can see the wind pushing the sail.
