Overview: American Association of University Women
The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is an association of 135,000 university graduates which
began in Boston in 1881 with a dual purpose: to further the education and advancement of women and to utilize the
privilege of higher education for community betterment. National Conventions meet biennially in states that have
ratified the Equal Rights Amendment.
Today, these goals are just as vital. AAUW promotes equality for women, education and self-development over the
life span, and positive social change. AAUW is an association of women and men helping its members achieve
through continuing education, community involvement, the arts, and legislation.
In principle and in practice, AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership. There shall be no barriers to full
participation in this organization on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, class, or
disability. AAUW is not a social organization but is socially active.
The AAUW Educational Foundation provides funds to advance education, research, and self-development for
women and to foster equity and positive social change.
The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund provides funding and a support system for women seeking judicial redress for
sex discrimination.

Indiana Public Policy 2003-2005
The following public policy agenda was adopted May 17, 2003, at the Indiana State Convention.
Indiana AAUW affirms AAUW’s longstanding commitment to the passage and ratification of the Equal Rights
Amendment. We support:
 Efforts to preserve and protect civil rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution and the Bill of
Rights
 Public budgets that balance individual rights and responsibility to community
 Equalization of marital property rights
 Pay equity
Indiana AAUW believes that public education is the foundation of a democratic society. We support:
 Academic freedom, educational equity, and gender fairness
 Affordable educational opportunities
 Adequate funding for public education: pre-kindergarten through college
 Enforcement of Title IX including gender equity in sports
Indiana AAUW promotes the social and economic vitality of all. We support:
 Continued legislative funding of the Indiana Commission for Women
 A diverse society
 Educating Indiana citizens about sexual and racial harassment
 Enforceable legislation against intimidation and hate crimes
 Acknowledging the legal rights of victims
 Consumer protection under the law
Indiana AAUW promotes the health and well-being of all. We support:
 Right to safe, affordable, and accessible physical and mental health care
 Choice in the determination of one’s reproductive life
 Affordable prescriptions
 Licensed, adequate, and affordable dependent care
 Health promotion and disease prevention programs
Indiana AAUW recognizes the importance of protecting the environment. We support:
 Energy conservation, pollution control, and aggressive recycling
 Comprehensive legislation regulating landfill expansion and developing alternatives
 Preservation of natural resources
Indiana AAUW advocates for the recognition of women’s worth. We support:
 Increasing the number of women in elective and appointed offices and policy-making positions
 Recognition of the value and efforts of volunteerism and care-giving
Indiana AAUW realizes the importance of the arts and humanities. We support:
 Public and private funding of the arts
 Expansion and maintenance of library and media services
 Establishment and maintenance of Hoosier historic sites

Indiana AAUW Resolutions 2003-2005
Whereas, AAUW supports equity for women and girls, lifelong education and positive societal change,
and
Whereas, AAUW prohibits barriers to full participation in its organization on the basis of gender, race,
creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, class, or disability,
Resolved, that all branches of the Indiana American Association of University Women be urged to
become aware of the rights and opportunities to all persons and how they might assure their full
participation in society.
Resolved, the Indiana AAUW continues to support efforts to aid the victims of domestic violence and
abuse.
Resolved, that all branches of the Indiana AAUW be urged to continue to study energy, its alternative
sources and evaluate them as to cost, usefulness and impact on the environment of each. The state,
branches and individuals should be advocates of the energy sources most valuable in their locality.
