Pages 11 - 14 1 LEWIS RETURNS WITH A NEW SERIES Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox reprise their roles as Inspector Robbie Lewis and his partner DS James Hathaway investigating very modern murders amidst the exquisite architecture of the ancient University of Oxford in the sixth series of one of ITV1’s best loved dramas, Lewis. Joining Whately, who has been playing Lewis for 26 years, and Fox is Clare Holman who returns as Dr Laura Hobson and Rebecca Front as Chief Superintendent Innocent. Jason Durr will also appear as Detective Inspector Peterson. Guest stars in the series include Celia Imrie (Titanic, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), James Fleet (Coronation Street, Little Dorrit), Roxanne McKee (Game of Thrones, Lip Service), Freddie Fox (The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Parade’s End), Toby Stephens (Jane Eyre, Die Another Day), Georgia Taylor (Casualty, The Bank Job), Ciaran McMenamin (Young James Herriot, Primeval), Con O’Neill (Criminal Justice, Ultimate Force) and Gary Kemp (The Rapture, Poppies), Patrick Baladi (Kidnap and Ransom, Mistresses), David Calder (Titanic, United), and David Soul (Jerry Springer: The Opera, Starsky & Hutch). The new series comprises four new films - The Soul of Genius (written by Rachel Bennette and directed by Brian Kelly), Generation of Vipers (written by Patrick Harbinson and directed by David O’Neill), Fearful Symmetry (written by Russell Lewis and directed by Nick Renton) and The Indelible Stain (written by Simon Block and directed by Tim Fywell). An ITV Studios production, Lewis is produced by Chris Burt who has been the series producer since the launch of Lewis in 2006. The executive producers are Mammoth Screen’s Michele Buck and Damien Timmer, who continue to work on the series for ITV Studios. The new series will once again feature beautiful locations in and around the city of Oxford, including the Cherwell and Isis rivers and the magnificent university colleges. The creator of Morse, Colin Dexter, continues his association with Lewis acting as a Consultant on all aspects of the production. “Lewis and Hathaway have become a formidable partnership not only in terms of cracking murders cases, but also in terms of their popularity with ITV1 viewers, “ said Controller of Drama Commissioning Sally Haynes. “ We’re thrilled they are returning to work on some great new stories.” Executive Producer Michele Buck said: “Lewis and Hathaway’s partnership has grown in popularity with every series as viewers enjoy the fine writing, acting and excellent production values Lewis has to offer." 2 Executive Producer Damien Timmer said: "We’re delighted to be producing a set of new films with Chris Burt and have two strong additions to the writing team this year, with Rachel Bennette (Bel Ami starring Robert Pattinson) and Simon Block (the award winning The Shooting of Thomas Hurndall) both joining us." A lot of people come up to me and tell me how much they like Lewis. Six years in I think viewers have got used to the show. It’s funny how many people were affronted by the way Morse treated Lewis, but now he’s very much his own man. Do you get fan mail? We get huge amounts of fan mail from all over the world. We get a lot from America and Australia and even from places like the Middle East and Russia. The genre is universal. Detection and murder mysteries are very popular everywhere, not just in the UK. What makes Lewis different from other detective dramas? Lewis has an extra angle, which is academia and Oxford University. Our guest cast includes well-established actors and we also have a mix of young cast straight out of drama school playing the students so we get quite a good cross section of audience as it appeals to people of all ages. Furthermore, Lewis has been around for so long and people know him as a very dependable character. The stories are also interesting and look good because the production values are always very high on the films. Another appeal is Oxford, which is another character to the plot. It’s a gorgeous and fascinating place. Have you got a favourite place in Oxford? Oriel College is where we film the most, so I feel at home there. Around the corner from Oriel College is a lovely garden with the old city wall around the outside looking down on Christ Church Meadow. There is a Morse bar in the Randolph and they are opening a Lewis bar at the back as an overflow area. I haven’t visited yet but it’s on my list of things to do. They serve Morse and Lewis cocktails there for tourists who like to visit Oxford. How has Lewis developed over the years? I’ve been playing Lewis for 26 years. He’s now a very different person having spent his entire life in the police force. He started off as quite happy-go-lucky but over time he’s got grumpier. What can we expect from the new series? There are four films and each is very different. I was very interested in the subject matter for Generation of Vipers because it looks at the Internet. It’s how you police it and the nature of privacy, which is in the news at the moment so it’s right up to date. At the start of the film Lewis and Hathaway are branded heroes when they stop a suspect getting away by rugby tackling him to the ground. The arrest is caught live on TV, and the next thing we know they are being castigated by a website for their actions. As actors we’re used to media attention and I found it very interesting because the characters are not used to being in the limelight. Lewis is amused at 4 first and really likes being on TV arresting a suspect. He feels he’s got one over DI Peterson, played by Jason Durr, who is a bit like ‘action man’. But the next thing Lewis knows he’s up to his neck in new media and realises he’s powerless to stop people saying exactly what they like online whether it’s true or not. How would you describe Lewis and Hathaway’s working relationship this series? Hathaway gets cheekier every year but Lewis gives as good as he gets. They are like an odd couple. They have the odd disagreement, which is bound to happen. In the future I think it might be interesting to add an extra edge and see a bit more fighting between the pair. How does the introduction of DI Peterson affect Lewis? DI Peterson is more of an old-fashioned type of cop. He likes shooting from the hip, being the ‘action man’ and donning body armour, whereas Lewis isn’t very physical. DI Peterson also tends to speak first and think later. All that gets up Lewis’s nose. He’s definitely not Lewis’s sort of cop in any sense. And there may be a hint of jealously where Dr Hobson is concerned! Do you think Lewis and Hobson’s relationship will develop? I think Lewis is scared. He is still seems obsessed by his wife and being a widower. Hobson couldn’t make it more obvious that she’s interested in him, if he had the courage to take it further. If he’s not careful she will move on, and may have done so already. But Lewis is determined to go into his dotage as a confirmed widower. He struggling to move on and take that next step. You work with a host of guest stars in Lewis. Who can we expect to see this year? Alex Jennings, Celia Imrie and James Fleet are in the first film, The Soul of Genius. I’ve worked with Alex before and I think the world of him; he’s one of the top stage actors in the country. I’ve also worked with Celia before, a long time ago when we played lovers in a cartoon that was a huge hit with undergraduates. Celia played a hippopotamus and I played a dog. We first met 30 years ago. Also starring in one of the other films is Laurence’s cousin Freddie Fox, Toby Stephens, David Soul, Gary Kemp, Lucy Coho and Con O’Neill. We have some fantastic guest stars and it’s a credit to the production team that they join us for this series. 5 Laurence Fox is DS James Hathaway What makes you want to come back to play DS Hathaway every year? I love working with Kevin and I love the crew. They are the reason I come back each time. Also, it’s high quality drama and I’m proud of it. Lewis has a loyal fan base. resonates with fans? What do you think it is about the show that People like to turn on terrestrial television and watch quality shows and I think Lewis is one of them. We manage to give them that every year by working hard at it. Lewis has performed better than I think anyone working on it imagined and that’s down to Kevin and the other cast and crew. We have a huge loyal following and that is great for everyone involved. How would you describe Hathaway in this series? Hathaway is a conflicted character. He’s got cynical yet idealistic qualities and they’re constantly in battle with one another. He’s a watcher of people, an observer, but he isn’t afraid to let people know what he thinks. He benefits from an Oxbridge education, and is very clever, which complements Lewis. He’s used his education well and its helpful when it comes to solving some of the more convoluted crimes. I learn a lot from the scripts. I have definitely become brighter as a result of playing Hathaway for over six years! In general I think I’m quite different to him, I am more vocal and outgoing, although I’m also probably more insecure. How would you describe the relationship between Hathaway and Lewis? When approaching a case, Lewis can see the shades of grey, whereas Hathaway tends to see things in black and white. They work well together – and are a bit like an odd couple. Hathaway has an interest in literature and anything to do with classical history but Lewis is more of an everyman. What can viewers expect from the new series of Lewis? There is a slight shift this year. I think the films feel a bit riskier and a little darker. There are a couple of stories that are very up to date and modern. There’s also a bit of action. I love doing scenes with action. It’s great fun and makes a change from the more sedentary aspects of the plot. One of the films involves Internet dating. It’s a good interesting story. Our modern world feels like a popularity contest dependent on the number of hits or people who have viewed your Internet profile. So it’s very up to date as a story. And it also incorporates cyber bullying, which is something Lewis gets particularly upset about. There is also a story incorporating fetish photography. I think it’s interesting to look at this modern world and the voyeuristic approach to life. The story also takes us to a laboratory researching the behaviour of monkeys. That element pricks at Hathaway’s 6 anger - the difference between God and man, and dominion over animals. It’s an issue which very strongly affects Hathaway in this story. Did you like working with the monkeys on set? I have a sort of innate fear of monkeys that I can’t explain. I didn’t want to go anywhere near them! I had to go in the compound with them at one point but they freaked me out! I’m afraid I’m not a big fan, even though I’m not that scared of animals. There was a moment when Kevin put his hand on a monkey’s head and the monkey trainer said: ‘Don’t do that if you want to keep your fingers!’ We also weren’t allowed to look them in the eyes; they take it as a threat. What’s your favourite location to film? I rather like filming in the Radcliffe Square, or Radcliffe Camera, around that area. Filming in the colleges and in the quads is lovely as well. Its just an incredible place to film. Oxford is a character in it’s own right and keeps the show looking fresh. Where do you like to go in Oxford when you’re not filming? I really like the Jericho Tavern. I also do a lot of fishing. I love fishing and go pipe fishing near the unit base. I do feel very blessed to work and, when I’ve got a few hours off, be able to throw a line in the water. 7 LEWIS VI SYNOPSES THE SOUL OF GENIUS When botanist LIV NASH (Nadine Lewington) accidentally digs up the body of recently buried English Professor, MURRAY HAWES, Lewis and Hathaway are set upon a seemingly impossible quest. Murray was a man possessed - fixated upon "solving" the riddle of Lewis Carroll's "The Hunting of the Snark". But could his obsession have been dangerous enough to get him killed? Lewis and Hathaway discover that Murray had a longstanding rivalry with his brother, the REVEREND DR CONOR HAWES (Alex Jennings) - a lecturer in Theology and Moral Philosophy - a rivalry built upon Conor's jealousy of his brother's genius, which has driven him to attempt to thwart Murray at every turn. However, our cops also have to deal with interference from MICHELLE MARBER (Celia Imrie) - a Miss Marple-style amateur detective, who seems convinced that the killer is local medical researcher and “gentleman scientist”, Dr ALEX FALCONER (James Fleet). They also come up against the postmodern mind-games of students VINCENT (Oliver Johnstone) and MIA (Daisy May), who seem intent on messing with the investigation in their quest to gain admittance into the exclusive, and mysterious, Wednesday Club. Meanwhile, Hathaway gets a little light relief in the form of a flirtation with the lovely botanist Liv Nash - until she herself worries if perhaps she knows too much... Could her boss at the Botanic Gardens, PROFESSOR HELENA WRIGHT (Matilda Ziegler), be involved in Murray's death..? Helena is clearly unstable, and when Liv finds a notebook of Murray's tucked away in the Gardens, she is left in a quandary as to whether to share her discovery with Hathaway; and potentially land her fragile boss in it. GENERATION OF VIPERS Super intelligent, but incredibly lonely professor MIRANDA THORNTON (Julie Cox), is devastated when she discovers that her Heart&Soul internet dating video has somehow found its way onto the subversive media blog, TheBarker.biz. With half her students giggling at the footage on their iphones, and slimy former date, FRANCIS MITCHELL (Alex Hanson), seeing her distress as a "romantic" opportunity, Miranda returns home - and is found dead the next morning. In her hand she is clutching a newspaper article about millionaire businessman, DAVID CONNELLY (Toby Stephens), who has been her nemesis for the last couple of years, proposing to buy up much of her college's land for housing development. The death appears to be a straightforward suicide, but after discovering that the married Mitchell visited Miranda shortly before her death, he becomes prime suspect. However, Mitchell seems to be in the clear when Hobson reports that she is 99% certain that the death was indeed a suicide. But Lewis seems unable to let the case drop. He has a major bee in his bonnet about TheBarker.biz's founder, KIT RENTON (Daniel La Paine), who clearly has no qualms about his site hosting the video, which drove a poor woman to kill herself. He is sure there is more to Miranda’s death than meets the eye. However, both Renton, and Heart&Soul’s owner, SUSANNA LELAND (Kate Maravan), prove somewhat obstructive; with Leland politely refusing to reveal personal details about her users to the police. 8 But with the help of the Force’s IT whizz GURDIP (Alton Letto), Lewis and Hathaway are able to ascertain that the dating site was hacked into by one SEBASTIAN DROMGOOLE (Freddie Fox), a cocky former student of Miranda’s, and one who seems to bear a grudge… Then when BRIONY KEAGAN (Roxanne McKee), Seb’s girlfriend, and a Barker.biz employee, is also found murdered, it seems that Lewis was definitely right in his suspicions. However, suddenly Lewis and Hathaway find that they themselves have become the story - their personal and professional lives dredged up for all to see on the pages of TheBarker, with the insinuation being that Hathaway pressurised Briony into carrying out dangerous undercover work for them. The police investigation is stepped up, with a new addition to their team – DI ALAN PETERSON (Jason Durr). It appears Briony must have been killed because she'd discovered something about Miranda's death. And the case takes a new turn when Lewis learns Miranda, Connelly, Renton and Leland were all at Oxford together twenty years ago. Could Miranda’s murder be linked to her past? FEARFUL SYMMETRY When babysitter, JESSICA LAKE (Abigail Hardingham), is discovered dead, it immediately throws up a number of questions for LEWIS and HATHAWAY. Was the killing opportunistic or calculated? Was Jess actually the intended victim, since NICK (Ciaran McMenamin) and HONEY ADDAMS (Georgia Taylor) were supposedly due to return that evening, plus their regular babysitter cancelled at the last minute? And finally, why was she tied-up post mortem? As our cops delve deeper they find themselves in the world of suburban swinging – with the Addams’ alibi being Nick’s smarmy nouveau-riche boss TOM GARLAND (Gary Kemp) and his wife, DAVINA (Katrine De Candole). They also find a photo of Jess with her elbows and wrists elaborately bound behind her, which leads them to fetish photographer, MARION HAMMOND (Lucy Cohu). Meanwhile, Jess’s boyfriend, GIDEON MASSEY (Pierro Niel Mee), informs them that Jess had been squatting in an abandoned children’s home, Boxgrove, where she grew up in care. Lewis and Hathaway visit the eerily empty building, and find Jess’s housemates KYLE (Merveille Lukeba) and SILAS (Bronson Webb), whom they inform of the murder. Silas takes it particularly hard. Following up Gideon’s alibi for the night of the murder, Lewis encounters DR. ROBERT MASSEY (Con O’Neill), an Ethologist at the university’s primate lab, where he studies communication between monkeys. Meanwhile, Hathaway visits the Ashmolean to interview Gideon’s mother, CONSTANZA (Anna Wilson Jones), who is busy preparing for Marion’s new exhibition – featuring pictures of Jess – and has little interest in Jessica’s death. Silas, on the other hand, has become fixated on the murder, and, inspired by his favourite comic book hero, he endeavours to track down the killer himself. Unfortunately, the morning after he sets off on his quest, he too is found dead – tied to a tree, shot through with spikes, in the pose of St Sebastian. It is another Marion Hammond homage. And his body is found just yards from her flat. After Silas’s death, the investigation steps up a gear. Hathaway discovers that years ago, Constanza Massey used to work at Boxgrove. It was her fortnightly “escape” from the son with whom she was never able to bond. She reveals to Hathaway that she hated Jess because she was a constant reminder of those days; and her failure as a mother. Also, on further questioning of the Garlands, Lewis discovers that Nick 9 Addams’ alibi isn’t quite so watertight as he had them believe, but is he capable of murder? When Hathaway unearths a vital clue it’s up to him and Lewis to catch the murderer before any more harm is done. THE INDELIBLE STAIN When controversial American academic, PAUL YELLAND (David Soul), is invited to speak at Oxford’s Department of Criminology about his theory of "dangerousness", it stirs up a lot of deep-seated emotions. Many are worried that such ideas could be used to target ethnic minorities; and local anti-racism activist, MYRA (Sian Webber), is the leader of the pack in voicing her disgust at Yelland's beliefs. However, the professor faces just as much opposition within the lecture theatre, with the department’s Director, ANNE RAND (Nancy Carroll), clearly very pleased at the publicity the event is raising for the college. Next morning, the visiting professor is found strangled in his room – is it suicide or an anti-hate lynching? Hobson quickly discounts the suicide theory - someone definitely helped Yelland into that noose and the suspects are many. Myra, or one of her vociferous accolytes? Black student NINA CLEMENS (Pippa Bennett-Warner), who was deeply disturbed by the ideas Yelland was spouting? The O’BRIEN’s (Rita Davies and Josephine Tewson), who had bombarded Yelland with threatening emails after he ripped them off? Or even one of the local academics - clearly disgusted by Yelland's views - but more than happy with all the media attention the department was receiving as a result? Lewis and Hathaway have a number of avenues to explore, and are all too aware of how delicately they need to tread - with Innocent on their case to ensure that the death doesn't spark any race wars within the city. But when Nina then turns up dead, her body dumped in the woods it seems they might be too late. However, Nina was not quite what she seemed either, having conducted an affair with one of the married Criminology professors ROBERT FRASER (Patrick Baladi), until his wife, Anne Rand recently put a stop to it. Shortly before her death Nina began receiving hate texts and silent phone calls. Could her killer have been a vengeful Rand, or a spurned Fraser? Her housemate, WILL PASCOE (Richard Southgate), who had long held an unrequited candle for Nina, is convinced that Fraser is to blame. Pascoe ends up in a cell, with Fraser and Rand in separate interview rooms, both receiving a grilling. Fraser professes that he could never have hurt Nina because he loved her; whilst Rand coolly dismisses any suggestion that she would have involved herself in anything so sordid. But perhaps the killer was actually a jealous Will, unable to bear the idea that Nina preferred Fraser over him; or their other housemate LARA, who always secretly resented Nina for her hold over Will. After following various lines of inquiry, Hathaway is unexpectedly led to the isolated country cottage of Professor Andrew Lipton who also shares a connection to Paul Yelland. Could he also have a reason to want both Yelland and Nina dead? 10 LEWIS VI Cast Credits THE SOUL OF GENIUS DI Robert Lewis..........................................................................................
