Prerequisite:
Math 30 or equivalent. It is important that students have a good grasp of the
material covered in Math 10, 20, and 30. Students who have taken Math 31 are
encouraged to register in Math 114.
Calculators:
Use of a calculators or formula sheets during exams is not permitted. You will
not be asked to perform any extensive calculations on exams.
Objectives and Course Content: The first course of Calculus is a basic mathematical tool for a
large population of students. This course aims to provide the knowledge and to
prepare students to solve optimization, rate of change and area problems using
the basics of calculus. The course will cover roughly chapters 1 - 5 (excluding
sections 1.4, 2.4, 3.8, 3.11,4.4, 4.6, 4.8) plus appendices A, B,C,D and E.
Final Grades:
Homework Assignments
10%
Midterm Exam
35%
Final Exam
55%
The exact rule used to translate scores into the letter grade system is not
determined in advance, but in general terms the minimum passing grade of D
will likely require a score of approximately 50% while a grade of A will likely
require a score in the 90's. Grades are assigned using the performance of prior
years as a guideline.
Assignments:
For assignments we will be using a web-based assignment grading system called
WebAssign. The class key for our section Math 114 F1 is: ualberta 6229 8437.
There will be 11 weekly assignments which are due on Wednesdays by 11 pm.
All assignments will be of equal weight and the grades on your best 10
assignments will determine your overall assignment grade. The Nelson
representatives will have office hours: Mon. Sept 12 from noon to 2 pm, and
Thu. Sept. 15, from 10 to noon, in CAB 563, where you can have your questions
about WebAssign answered.
Examinations:
Midterm: Wednesday, October 26, 2011, during the regular class period.
Final: Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 2:00 – 4:00 pm.
Deferred Examination: There will be NO deferred midterm examination. If
you have a valid reason for missing the exam, e.g., you were gravely ill
(students are required to submit requests for excused absences within 48 hours
of missing the exam), then the weight of the midterm will be transferred to the
final exam weight.
The deferred final examination (for those who qualify) is scheduled as follows:
Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 9:00 am, room TBA. Please note that students are
required to apply for deferred final exams their faculty office.
Web Site:
Course materials which are particular to our class ( F1 ) such as the course
outline, exam practice problems and their solutions etc. will be posted on my
web site:
