The main objective of the course is to get the mastery of the main definition and basic
knowledge of General Economics (on the micro- and macro level), Agricultural Economics,
knowledge on the European Union and Economic Law; form on economic view; lay the
foundation of applied economic sciences.

9. Course content: (for 14 weeks)
1. a.) An introduction to economics. The fundamental conceptions and methods of
economics. The elements of the market systems. The history of economic thought.
b.) Main definitions (agriculture, agricultural economics, agrobusiness,
multifunctional agriculture). The role of agriculture in the national economy.
2. a.) The theory of consumer behaviour. Total utility, marginal utility, utility curves,
budget line. Law of diminishing marginal utility, preferences of consumption. Income
consumption curve, price consumption curve. Elasticity (price elasticity of demand
and income elasticity of demand)
b.) The main social and economical characteristics of agriculture

production function, marginal product function, average product function.
b.) Inputs in agriculture
4. a.) The costs of production. The definition and type of costs. The Cost functions in
short run and in the long run. The supply of competitive firm.

5. a.) Monopoly, Oligopoly and Monopolistic competition. Price discrimination.

6. a.) The market of economic resources. Demand of inputs (derived demand). Profit
maximization from the input using up point of view. Distribution of income.

7. a.) Market failure. Market power. Externalities and public goods.
b.) Institutional structure of the EU
8. a.) The basics of Macroeconomics. The fundamental conceptions and methods of
macroeconomics. The distribution of income and accounting income between firms,
households, government and foreign lands.

9. a.) Accounting of macroeconomic activities. The System of National Accounts (SNA).
b.) The budget of the EU
10. a.) Commodity market – Equilibrium income.
