THE SCOOP in 4th Grade… August 2012 Dear Parents/Guardians, Welcome to fourth grade! Here is some important information about our classes and what to expect! Meet Mrs. Brady! Welcome to a great, new school year! I have been teaching in Brunswick for 19 years. This is my second year teaching fourth grade, and I will be teaching your students language arts and science. Previously, I taught second grade at Hickory Ridge then served Brunswick City Schools as a full-time mentor to new teachers. I really enjoy working with fourth graders! I earned my teaching degree from the University of Akron and my Master’s Degree in Curriculum, Instruction, and Supervision from Kent State University. Recently, I earned my Teacher Leader Endorsement through the University of Cincinnati. I live in Wadsworth, Ohio with my husband, son Keegan, daughter Camdyn, as well as with our dog Grizzly and our cat, Dash. I enjoy reading and antiquing and consider myself to be a lifelong learner. I look forward to a fantastic school year! Meet Mrs. Coates! This is my fourth year teaching fourth grade at Hickory Ridge. Previously, I was an 8th grade teacher at Willetts. I received a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Mount Union and a Master’s Degree in instructional technology from the University of Akron. I am currently pursuing an advanced degree in eLearning. I will be teaching your students math and social studies this year. Here is a great math website you should check out and use with your child at home: https://sites.google.com/site/misssholtismathclass/. In my free time, I enjoy running and working out and have competed in many marathon and half marathon races. I am married and reside in Medina. I also love to travel, read, swim, and visit with family and friends. I am looking forward to an exciting year filled with memorable learning experiences! Each subject has a different colored folder: Science: Red Folder OAA Practice: Green Folder Social Studies: Blue Folder Math: Yellow Folder Music: Fun Folder Daily: Purple Folder Private: Fun Folder Gym: Fun Folder Students switch classes in fourth grade. A spelling test is every other Wednesday. The daily folder (purple) should come to and from school everyday. It is NOT a homework folder. Its purpose is for communication to and from school. Please clean it out each night by asking your child what he/she needs to keep at home and what should stay in it to be returned to school the next day. There is NO HOMEWORK FOLDER! So when a child has homework in science for example, he/she should be bringing home his/her science folder. After homework is complete, it should be put back in the science folder. Assignment Notebook- This should be coming home EVERY night and returned to school the next day. The students are responsible for copying down the assignments from the board daily! The assignment notebook lists your student’s homework for that evening. Please make sure your child checks it every night and completes his/her homework. A parent needs to sign the assignment notebook EVERY night. Random checks by the teacher will be conducted, and a student will receive a consequence for not having it signed. If you are planning on sending in any treats, please make sure that there is enough for the entire class (about 25 students). If you are sending in money for field trips, book fees or something else, please send EVERYTHING in an ENVELOPE with the child’s name and what it contains clearly marked on the front. This avoids money getting lost or stolen. Be sure to check out the Hickory Ridge website weekly to visit your child’s teachers’ web pages for important updates and relevant learning materials. Visit www.bcsoh.org, and under the Schools tab, select Hickory Ridge to find the staff’s web pages! Grading Policy: Grades are distributed using the district wide grading scale. In math, science, social studies, and language arts, grades will be determined using the following calculations: 60% of the total grade is tests. 30% of the total grade is quizzes and projects. 10% of the total grade is class work and homework. Here is a breakdown of which subject each teacher is responsible for teaching: Mrs. Coates Mrs. Brady Math and Social Studies Language Arts and Science ***If you have a question in a particular subject, please contact that teacher directly.*** We looking forward to meeting you at Curriculum Night!
