522400 Lead Bus Driver Page 1 Job Title: Lead Bus Driver Wage/Hour Status: Hourly Reports to: Foreman, Transportation Pay Grade: 404T Dept/School: Transportation Date Revised: April 29, 2005 Primary Purpose Help plan and monitor bus drivers’ ability to operate and service district vehicles. Ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned route. Operate a school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from school or other designated locations. Perform transportation safety work. Coordinated assignments and schedule bus drivers routes to ensure safe and efficient transportation services. Perform bus dispatcher work and other office work to ensure efficient transportation services. Qualifications Education/Certification High school diploma or GED certificate Valid Texas commercial driver’s license/passenger and school bus endorsements Obtain Region 19 School Bus Driver Certificate Special Knowledge/Skills Must be 18 years of age Ability to speak, read, and write English effectively Ability to communicate effectively Ability to operate bus Ability to pass alcohol and drug test Ability to pass annual physical Experience Two years transportation experience in either bus driving/bus dispatcher work Major Responsibilities and Duties 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. 15. 16. 17. Assists the Transportation Foreman, Assistant Foreman and Dispatcher as needed. Passes annual physical examination as required by state law. Acts as liaison and problem solver between the Transportation Department and the community with transportation related problems. Instructs school bus drivers as to routes and schedules. Provides Transportation Director, Foreman, Assistant Foreman, Secretary and Dispatcher with route information related problems. Performs as substitute or regular driver as needed. Assists in training school bus driver applicants. Communicates with school bus drivers concerning Transportation Department policies, procedures and route problems. Obeys all traffic laws. Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses. Maintains discipline when students are on bus. Reports students who misbehave to the proper authority and files appropriate misconduct form. Keeps to assigned schedule, route and designated stops. Checks bus before, during and after each operation for mechanical defects. Notifies the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness. Discharges students at authorized stops. Supports the goals and objectives of the school district and follows all district policies. Performs bus dispatcher work according to established policies. Performs office work as directed by the supervisor in charge. Performs bus driver safety related work, such as driver evacuations and safety training. Monitors driving performance and counsel bus drivers when necessary. Operates two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office and drivers. Assists in preparing Special Education and Regular bus routes and ensure that drivers maintain a route folder with accurate description of their routes. 27. Assists in coordinating and scheduling all summer school routes. 28. Assists in preparing and updating district maps showing areas served by each bus. 29. Performs other duties as assigned by administration supervisor. Supervisory Responsibilities Monitor the work of assigned drivers and monitors. Equipment Used School bus, other district vehicles, safety equipment, radio communication equipment computer, typewriter. Physical and Mental Job Requirements Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors Clear speech, ability to drive a bus, repetitive hand and arm motions; early shift work. Maintain emotional control under stress. Continual sitting, reaching, works outside and inside, moderate exposure to different temperatures and vehicle fumes. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
