Secretary's Report - Parramatta Computer Pals for Seniors

President’s Report
It’s very pleasing to report that our
club, Parramatta Computer Pals for
Seniors Inc., is going from strength
to strength.
We have a committee of dedicated
people, each of whom devotes many
hours to our club’s activities.
One of these was Seniors Week, an
initiative of the NSW government.
We demonstrated Digital Photo
Management in Parramatta Town
Hall as part of a Healthy Heart
Activity, and we gave a presentation
at Granville Library on our range of
courses.
Our committee is also very stable,
which allows us to discuss issues
with a minimum of “going over old
ground” which occurs when new
people join a committee. On the
other hand, of course, we welcome
new members as they bring fresh
ideas and often a different way of
looking at things.
Our club membership continues to
grow and an increasing number
renew their membership when it
becomes due. This indicates that we
provide more than just the learning
experience which is our basic aim. It
tells us that people like to belong and
to engage in more advanced learning
as well as join us in our social
events.
Lunch at the Leagues – every quarter
No less than 11 of us attended the
Australian Seniors Computer Clubs
Association annual conference – one
of the largest contingents from any
club.
We have continued to hold quarterly
lunches during term breaks at
Parramatta Leagues Club – and
great fun they are too.
During the year we participated in a
number of community activities.

Our monthly Members’ Meeting
continue to grow in popularity and we
have had to hire a larger room to
accommodate the larger group. We
now expect 50 or more attendees at
each meeting.
Our monthly meetings have had
guest speakers on a range of topics
including: Computing in Ireland (Cnr
Michael McDermott), Aids for people
with poor hearing (Allyson Young),
The Future of Computing (Paul
Wallbank). And several of our own
members on such topics as Planning
you Overseas Trip with your PC
(Deborah Martin).
We now have two sponsors –
InHome Media and DCA Computers.
Both of these organisations offer
personalised services to members
and are well worth exploring if you
need help with your PC or perhaps a
new PC.
A special thank you to all who helped
make our birthday celebrations such
a success – especially the caterers.
In fact, all our monthly meetings
would pretty dull without the help and
enthusiasm of our catering
volunteers. So, thank you, one and
all.
We now present a volunteer with a
Club Mug at each of our monthly
meetings as a small token of our
appreciation.
I’d like to thank all the committee, all
office helpers, all those who help set
up our rooms, all trainers and all
buddies for the enormous effort you
put in throughout the year.
John celebrating our birthday
Our 4th birthday party in January
was a hoot. Not only did we have a
great party with lots of great food, but
we also showcased our
achievements over the past year.
Finally, a big thank you to my wife,
Margaret, who not only works as
secretary, trainer, web master and
newsletter editor, but also supports
me in so many ways.
Regards
John Moxon

Membership
Parramatta Computer Pals for
Seniors ended the financial year with
232 financial members, with 65% of
the previous year’s members
renewing.
We continue to have many word of
mouth bookings, but increasingly,
Council including the library staff are
making referrals and giving enquirers
our brochures.
The club rooms in the Council
Chambers building continue to be
used five days per week, with
Fridays being set aside for short
courses, special interest group
meetings and ad hoc training of
volunteers.
However, the Club is now
increasingly hiring the Gwen Logan
Room adjacent to our club rooms for
planning meetings and for our new
Apple MAC special interest group.
Demonstrating iPad – Deborah & Jan
Popular monthly meeting in Dan Mahoney
The club also introduced the policy
of waiving the $20 joining fee for
enquirers who were members of
other seniors clubs in the LGA. This
has encouraged many members of
Probus, the Parramatta Historical
Society and the Learning and
Leisure Centre to join us.
Use of facilities
This is apart from our monthly
booking for the members’ meeting.
It became clear during the year that
the Gwen Logan Room was no
longer adequate for the larger
numbers we were attracting (over
50), so we approached Council to
hire the larger Dan Mahoney Room
for the following financial year. In
fact, we did a swap with another
community group, since their
numbers were much smaller.
Community grants
Once again, the Club did not apply
for any Council grants, but did put in
an application for the
Commonwealth Government’s
Laptop familiarization course in hired room

Community Volunteer grants. This is
for Apple Mac laptops and a
projector. The outcome will not be
known until about November 2011.
Management Committee
The only change to the management
committee in 2010-11 was:
 Michael Myers who was coopted to the Committee in
November. He has provided
invaluable input.
Volunteers
We continue to have a large core
group of volunteers who provide
assistance with office work, student
training and catering.
Many step in at the last moment to
replace volunteers with ill-health or
unavoidable appointments.
Volunteer Bev Pieremont with
president John Moxon
Office assistants answer the phone,
take and record fees and book
members into courses, aided by a
course timetable and waiting list
developed as shared Google
documents.
Once again, particular thanks must
be given to our catering volunteers,
headed by Hazel Gibbs, with able
assistants, especially Lyndell Neal,
Beryl Duff, Margaret Green, Bev
Monthly meeting fare
Pieremont and Anne Howison.
Supplies for student coffee breaks
are constantly replenished, and
member meetings well catered.
Many members bring in home baked
and other special treats which are
shared by students during the week,
and add to our special morning teas
at the monthly meeting.
When we hear of a bereavement or
a member being seriously ill or in
hospital, we ask Margaret Green,
Lily Patterson or Judith Joyce to
create a card, and this is always
appreciated.
Earlier in the year, Michael Myers did
a cost benefit analysis of outsourcing
the printing, collating and holepunching our student manuals. He
found that the Club could do these
tasks in house and make significant
savings – using volunteer labour of
course. With the Committee’s
approval, he set up two teams of
volunteers to undertake these tasks
each term.
I continue to edit and distribute the
monthly ParraPals Newsletter which
is produced 12 times a year; and
develop and maintain the club
website. We entered both these in
the 2010 ASCCA club competitions
Parramatta Computer Pals for Seniors Inc.: Annual Report 2010-11
Page 4
for the best website and best club
newsletter and won second prize for
each.
We have also established a
Facebook presence with a group
called Parramatta Computer Pals for
Seniors. It currently has 59
members.
As well, we have a blog called
Nevertheless I look forward to
continuing to maintain the website
and edit the newsletter – assuming
no one else wants to do it – as well
as support the management
committee in any way I can.
Thank you, members for your
support and encouragement over the
last four and a half years.

Training Coordinator’s report
Parramatta Computer Pals for
Seniors is very fortunate to have a
small band of enthusiastic volunteer
trainers to cover classes Monday to
Thursdays and the occasional Friday
short course.
It is with sadness I report that trainer
Wayne Johnston had to withdraw
from training activities due to
treatment for what was subsequently
a terminal illness.

booting system. Michael Myers
designed training material for

Demand for Vista courses has
decreased significantly with the
wider acceptance by students of
Windows 7. However, those
students who have Vista at home are
able to log into that system for many
The club did not attract any new
trainers during the period, and whilst
we managed to cover illnesses and
absences due to holidays, this could
become a problem in the future. All
bar one of our trainers are also on
the committee of management, and
that one trainer not on the committee
maintains our training computers as
well.
Without additional trainers, the club
will not be able to grow any further,
to meet the demand we are aware is
out there.
During the year, Windows 7 was
installed on all seven training

During the year, the Club offered 98
course opportunities with 507
member bookings, compared with

Planning future training
Of the 507 bookings, 276 were for 10
hour courses, six were for eight hour
courses; 11 for four hour duration;
and 214 were for two hour short
courses. The latter are very popular
with members who have completed

many of our 5 week (10 hour)
courses.
All up, our members paid for 3,280
hours of training.

Learning opportunities are not limited
to formal courses: the Club now
runs a Q & A session as well as a
computer based presentation at
each monthly meeting; three Special
Interest Groups (Digital photos;
genealogy; Apple MAC);
encouragement to enter ASCCA club
competitions; buddy opportunities;
and field trips to places of interest for
family research and digital
photography.
During the year, the club built up a
core group of about 12 buddies.
This year, our buddies have been
actively involved in course planning
meetings, and helping to problem
solve. These buddies are mostly
members who have gained all their
computer experience through the
club, and therefore can empathise
with new students and those
struggling with new computer
concepts and applications.

As training co-ordinator, my role
includes calling trainer meetings,
coordinating Term course rosters
and making sure that training
manuals are available for all
courses. Fortunately the
development of course notes is
shared by all our trainers.
Our IT team, John Moxon and Jon
Bayley ensure that relevant software
is available for all our courses on the
relevant operating systems – a
complex and time consuming task;
but critical to ensure the smooth
running of courses.
We are slowly introducing Apple
MAC courses, and on 22nd June, an
information session was held to
gauge interest in starting a MAC
Special Interest Group. The answer
from the dozen or so MAC
enthusiasts who attended was a
resounding YES.
I’m looking forward to a great year
ahead.

Scope
I have audited the financial report, being a special purpose financial report, of Parramatta Computer

financial report and has determined that the accounting policies used and described in Note 1 to the

requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act N.S.W. and to meet the needs of the members. I
have conducted an independent audit of this financial report in order to express an opinion on it to the

My audit has been conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. My procedures
included examination, on a test basis, of evidence supporting the amounts and other disclosures in the

in accordance with the accounting policies described in Note 1 so as to present a view which is
consistent with my understanding of the Association’s financial position, and performance as
represented by the results of its operations and its cash flows. These policies do not require the

In my opinion, the financial report presents fairly in accordance with the accounting policies described
in Note 1 to the financial statements, the financial position of Parramatta Computer Pals for Seniors

relation to the recording of cash receipts from members. Revenue from this source represents
a significant proportion of Parramatta Computer Pals for Seniors Inc, revenue. My opinion is
unmodified in respect of this matter.
