The Russian Revolution After the Revolution - Russian people wanted change Revolution Begins - March 8, 1917, citizens went to Petrograd to protest because of no food and fuel - police and soldiers had to shoot them, but refused - Nicholas II told Duma to disband, but they didn’t listen - He didn’t have control of his nation, and forced to abdicate on March 15, monarchy ended - Called this the Feb. Revolution, because their system of the calendar was behind by 13 days The Provisional Government - Duma established temporary government, aka provisional government: leader Aleksandr Keens - Russians unhappy, wanted no more war, but still continued on with WWI and peasants wanted land and food, but not much being done - people opposed to this were Bolsheviks, wanted basic change – Marxist Revolution (social equality) - Bolshevism became known as MarxismLeninism because of their leader Bolshevik Revolution - wanted to end their involvement in WWI, sent Leon Trotsky, an official, to negotiate for peace - army so weak, agree was harsh to Russia, but gave up land Civil War - agreement to this, made their opponents mad (White Army) - White Army made up of army leaders, and political opponents of Bolsheviks and wealthy Russians - Whites received help from France and US (because they opposed Bolsheviks) - Civil war broke out for three years against them, millions died, famine came across - ended in 1920, Bolsheviks won New Economic Policy - economy in ruins because of war, peasants and workers hit the most - Lenin introduced New Economic Policy – permitted some capitalistic activity - peasants could sell food for profit, wanted to have more food production The Soviet Union - 1922 economy improving - united with other lands that were orginially theirs and made the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (Soviet Union) Comments/connections… - What were the actions of Lenin that made him be exiled off of Russia before he came back and started his reign? - It was interesting to see that the government wanted to make an equal society but still you see the lower class suffering, while the upper class still was living a great life. - I think that the only reason that Kerensky’s government had failed was that they had failed to meet the demands of the peasants during that time. If they had gotten what the wanted, which was land and more food, they would have been a little more successful in that form of government. - I think after all the mess that was made with the Bolsheviks and the White Army that after Lenin died it’s going to start back up again. This is probably why Russia might have a little more problems in the future, because of that loss of great power, and no guidance form there on out. - Kerenskys plans not working for final military offense against CP, rebellion started, Russian army collapsed - November 1817 Bolshevik workers called Red Guard attacked provisional government called October Revolution - government collapses, and Lenin started establishing communist programs - seized factories and lands and gave it to workers and peasants - Lenin’s health was bad, he died in 1924, no person to rule after him, and led to a struggle in SU
