March 2015 newsletter
Dear Parents/Carers,
2nd March 2015
The children have taken over! Welcome to our first production of the school newsletter from Primary
7. February 1st seems such a long time ago, we hope you enjoyed a long lie in on the February weekend,
we certainly did! We have had a Fabulous February and are hoping for a Magnificent March. This
month Primary 7 have created and edited the school newsletter. We hope you enjoy reading our news
from February and the exciting events planned for March.
Class Learning
P1 are studying the topic ‘People Who Help Us’. They are learning all about police, fire brigade,
doctors, dentist, vets etc.
P2 paid a visit the Riverside Museum.
P234 have been around looking at all the different houses and homes in the local area.
P3 are going to visit the Egyptian archive and have been out on the streets surveying the local area
looking at the different houses and homes.
P3/4 went to the Burrell collection to learn about ancient Egyptian objects.
P4 have been on a class trip to the Burrell Collection for an Ancient Egypt workshop. The class got to
handle Egyptian objects that were thousands of years old. P4 also shared what they had learned with
the school at an assembly.
P5 are creating their Class Charter, focusing on the following 4 Rights and Responsibilities.
P567 have celebrated Chinese New Year with P6 by researching the tradition, shopping for
traditional food and had a Chinese party.
P6 hosted a Burns Supper event where they invited Mrs Harker, Miss Kelly, Miss O’Connor, and
Dinner Ladies, Stephen the Janitor, Mrs Connell and Mrs Ali
P7 continue to develop their enterprise skills and had the pleasure of visiting the City Chambers last
month to enter a Dragons Den competition in which they won £100 towards social enterprise
activities.
P7 also organised an extremely successful pamper day raising money for charity.
Our Culture Club performed a Chinese New Year Presentation sharing their knowledge of Chinese
traditions.
Social Enterprise
Primary 7 went to the City Chambers to perform to the Dragons explaining their business ideas for
social enterprise. We had two groups performing - one was the Homework club and the other was the
Art club. The judges were very impressed with our speech and confidence. We got to the finals and
we won £100 for our school which was a great success. We look forward to entering another
competition for Social Enterprise in June. Our Homework club continues after school to support
pupils and our Art club will commence again in Term 4 to raise money for charity.
After School Clubs
In St Alberts we are able to offer some exciting new after school clubs. This includes Dance club,
Netball club, Gaelic Football club, Football club, Homework club and Art club. If your child is
interested in joining the clubs please let their teacher know.
Blairvadoch
On February 2nd it seemed like an impossible task for P6/7 to understand how to be responsible for
themselves for almost a week. However they had to learn quickly to overcome their fears or they
would never able to try out different exciting experiences on their five days in Blairvadoch, an
outdoor activity centre. We met lots of new friends from St. Francis of Assisi primary school and
some of the groups joined together with our school. The pupils had a great time; some even smashed
the goals they had set for Blairvadoch. They all learned some life skills and had great fun sharing
rooms with their friends. We would like to thank Mr Church and Miss Kelly for joining us in the fun
and thank our parents for supporting us.
World Book Day
On Friday 6th March we will be celebrating World Book Day. Our whole school is currently writing a
story which will be revealed and read on World Book Day. This will be followed by a competition to
design a book cover for the St. Albert’s Story. Primary 7 pupils will be reading traditional stories
from different countries and languages. We hope your child will enjoy this shared reading and writing
experience.
Ministerial Launch in the school of the Pakistan/Scottish Scholarship Scheme
On the 5th of March we will be celebrating our links with Pakistan. Humzah Yousaf, Scottish
Government Minister for Europe and International Development will be in our school to launch the
Scottish Government’s Pakistan School’s Scholarship. Pupils will have the opportunity to speak to
children in Vehari through Skype. P4-P7 pupils and parents are also invited to this event. We hope to
continue our links with Pakistan and work with the Scottish government on their project to fund
education in Pakistan.
Science/Eco week
During March we will celebrate Science and Eco. In science your child will experience many science
activities including sessions from Science Boffins and Rocket Science workshops. Our eco committee
are working hard to organise events such as Biodegradable Experiments and SSPCA workshops which
we hope your child will enjoy. We will also have the opportunity to visit the Hidden Gardens to get
involved with gardening workshops in preparation to begin replanting the Wildflower garden and
planting raised beds in our own garden.
Health Week
Health week is an important part of St Albert’s primary school and community. Health week starts on
the Monday 9th of March 2015 and ends on the 20th of March 2015. During health week we are going
to have lots of activities which will include a walk to Maxwell Park, a health assembly and P7 boys are
arranging a whole school sporting event to raise money for charity. We are planning extra Playground
games and a football match between pupils and staff. Your child will have the opportunity to try
healthy recipes followed by health games and much more. We hope your child enjoys health week and
makes the most of this learning experience.
Fair Trade
Fair trade is important in St Albert’s Primary School. As you know we have been very successful in
the past in many ways. From Monday 9th March to 23th March it will be fair-trade week. We will try
to raise money for SCIAF and will be planning a fair-trade stall where we will sell chocolate, fruit and
bracelets and much more. Through learning experiences our pupils will appreciate and learn the values
of fair trade in our community.
Radio Station
S.T.A.R.S our new Radio Station will soon be launched in April! The creators of the great logo are
Mirna Jomaa P7 and Salahudeen Khan P3/4. Another thing, the creator of the name is Rhia Sangray
from P6. These children will receive an amazing prize which is a Personal Digital Radio! This app is
created to make talking and listening fun also to let parents know what events are happening in the
school. You will be able to find this App on iTunes and Google Play, just search My School App and
find St Albert's on it. Some of the people who will be interviewed include Nicola Sturgeon and one of
the first pupils of St Albert's Primary School. The first program will be approximately 25-30
minutes long. The children who are part of the Radio committee include Rimsha, Fatima, Rhia, Reeba,
