Also introduces roles of information in an organization, information as a resource, and how information systems manage organizational information. Contents include basic computer hardware; O/S functions, file mgt.; basic network components; procedural versus nonprocedural programming, object oriented programming; types of Information Systems; IS planning, IS career paths. Personal productivity software such as spreadsheets and statistical analysis tools are used to enhance business problem solving. Textbooks: Management Information Systems, 7th Ed., by Laudon & Laudon, PrenticeHall, 2002. 0-13-033066-3. Prerequisite: IST 203 Co-requisite: OMS 201 Last Day to Drop: Jan 24, F (without "W" grade) or Mar 28, F (with "W" grade). Final Exam Date: May 8, Thursday, 1:00-3:00 pm Course Grade: The course grade is based on a student's overall performance through the entire semester. The relative weights for the final grade are distributed among the following: Examinations and quizzes 50% Projects and assignments 50% The instructor may increase the weights for “Projects and assignments” and may also take attendance into consideration in assigning grades. Homework Policy: All homework and assignments are due in class on the specified date. All assignments must be individually and independently completed and must represent the effort of the student turning in the assignment. Should two or more students turn in substantially the same solution or program, in the judgment of the instructor, the solution will be considered a group effort. Both or all involved in a group effort homework will receive a zero grade for that homework/assignment. A student turning in a group effort homework/assignment more than once will automatically receive a "F" grade for the course. Late Assignments: An assignment is to be turned in at the beginning of class on the day it is due. An assignment turned in later than the due date will be penalized 10% of the total possible points for the assignment for each day late (excluding weekends and University Holidays). No late assignment will be accepted after the assignment is graded and returned. Make-Up Exam Policy: Make-up examinations will be given only in case of serious need and only when the instructor is notified prior to the examination time. If this is not done, the grade is automatically zero for that examination. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the IST 221 1 instructor for arranging a make-up time. Written verification for the student's inability to take an exam will be required. Course Schedule: The schedule of topics and their order of coverage is given below.
