Cable preparation for the B-field sensor 1-1-2004 J.Kuit NIKHEF, Kruislaan 409, 1098SJ Amsterdam, Netherlands jaapk@nikhef.nl It is somewhat tricky to mount the cable – connector assembly. Most of the properties are dictated by the hostile environment like radiation where in the sensor is used. The combination of cable, sensor and connector is showed in figure 1. Connector The cable connector is a 10 pins single in line type. Manufacturer: Fischer Elektronik; Type: FV10G Webpage: www.fischerelektronik Cable The ribbon cable is a 20 wire kapton cable from the CERN store; SCEM: 04.21.22.320.7 The cable is sold in rolls of 30 meters. NOTE: of the 20 wires only 19 are used; strip the 20th wire. The connector position on the ribbon cable is important because the Fischer connector is not symmetric. On both sides of the cable the connector should be connected like the drawing in figure 2. Figure 2: Wire use of the cable Connector to cable assembling In electronic engineering it is customary to force the connector onto a ribbon cable with a bench vice. With this connector the connection will become somewhat unreliable. It is better to use a slightly modified special purpose bench press from Fischer Elektronik; Type: VBK 1 with removable locating frame; Type: FW W. (fig.6). Unfortunately, the locator frame from Fischer is not very good. So we designed and made our own locator frame (fig. 4, 5, 7) from aluminum. Figure 7: Detail of the modified locator plate 2 Cable test You should use a cable tester to check if all the connections are made. A useful ribbon cable tester can be obtained from Farnell; Order Code: 154-271, price: ~510€ NOTE: This connector – cable connection has no strain relief. So be careful with pulling forces during installation. Figure 8: Cable tester 3 4
