Marshall Fundamental Secondary School PTSA Minutes June 10, 2009 Executive Board Meeting 1. Welcome and Introductions Meeting called to order at 6:33 p.m. by PTSA President Laura Zeronian with 9 people in attendance. 2. Special Guests: PCC Scholarship recipients: Mrs. Poghosyan (representing Srbuhi Poghosyan) and Denise Cabral. Recipients will be attending PCC in the Fall. They accepted their $500 gift certificates to the PCC Bookstore. 3. Review of Minutes The May 13, 2009 minutes were accepted for filing with the following correction: Lewis Watson not R. Watson. Motion A. Durden, 2nd L. Watson. 4. Treasurer’s Report L. Zeronian presented the May Treasurer’s Reports. Available balance in May: $4,756,90. Treasurers Report accepted for filing. 5. Committee Reports Site Council: G. Burt reported on Measure TT presentation made to the committee by Steve Brinkman, PUSD Chief, Facilities, Planning, Construction, Maintenance and Operations and two architects contracted by the District. $22 Million of the TT funds can be spent on repairs and modernization at Marshall. Brinkman presented the Districtidentified list of projects for Marshall (see PUSD website “Foundation Master Plan) and asked the Site Council for suggestions and priorities for the money. Projects will start in summer 2010. Initial project ideas include: upgrade all electrical, replacing windows with double-pane aluminum, library modernization, replace or upgrade gym and cafeteria. A follow-up is scheduled for June 24, 3 p.m. to discuss the school’s priorities. ASB student representatives, teacher and staff voting site council members will be selected in the Fall. Health & Safety: the earthquake drill went well with a quick evacuation (4.5 minutes). Additional class signs are needed. District committee is working on plan for evacuation of special needs students. Marshall has 150 special education students. The school nurse will collect classroom first aid kits, refill them and redistribute to classrooms in the fall. PTA Council: PTA collaboration will be held Sunday August 16 to share membership ideas, success and problem issues. 6. Principal’s Report: Marshall is ranked #152, up 5 points from previous year in Newsweek magazine’s Top Public High Schools. The list includes the top six percent of high schools nationwide. Marshall has an “equity in excellence” rating of 43%, an increase of 10%. This means 43% of graduating seniors passed at least 1 AP exam. Marshall’s base API score is 732. The “Every Classroom Every Day” grant-funded program for extra English and Math enrichment will begin in the Fall. Math teachers for 9th and 10th grades will work over the summer to create benchmarks related to key learning goals. The program focuses on mastery of the standards content. English class periods will be longer (at least 60 minutes) to incorporate the new program. 7. President’s Report: President Zeronian thanked the members for their support and hard work during this year. 8. New Business: Student Evan Salce will refinish the field bleachers during the summer as an Eagle Scout project. He has scheduled a workday on June 13. Donations are needed to supply the wood. Motion to contribute $550 towards the cost of wood to repair the bleachers. Motion K. Goguen, 2nd S. Burt. Motion carried. 9. Announcements Volunteer appreciation reception June 11, 3 p.m. in the Library; Volunteers are needed to help collect textbooks in the library. Volunteer needed to help with assembling registration packets and for registration, August 24-27. Graduation, Saturday June 13, 9 a.m. at PCC. 10.
