Appendix A: Industrial Attachment Programme (IAP) Guidelines
Introduction
Our Industrial Attachment Programme started in 1999. The students in their penultimate
year of their training are attached to companies to work on an industry-based real-life 12week project.
Objectives
1. To expose students to industry-based real-life design employment situations,
2. To boost the student's technical and design-related knowledge and skills and to improve
competency,
3. To cultivate the student’s professionalism, aptitude, attitude and adaptive skills in real-life
situations,
4. To develop the student's interpersonal and collaborative skills in a team-based
environment,
5. To prepare the student to be adaptable, resilient and to be quickly assimilated into the
workforce and
6. To help forge and support a closer relationship between the industry and the Nanyang
Polytechnic.
Project Criteria
As a guide, our students, depending on their specialization, should either be engaged in the
areas of space & interior design, visual communication design or industrial and consumer
product design.
Project Specifications
Please use the Industrial Attachment Programme’s Company Registration Form (Appendix
C) to register your company and also the Project Proposal Form (Appendix D) to write up
about the project that you have in mind for our students.
Industrial Attachment Programme (IAP)
The attached student will work in the office of the company for the whole duration of the
attachment. He/she will be working on the assigned project under the direct supervision of a
design-trained staff from the company, whom we termed as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC). The
attached student will abide with the company’s operating hours, dress code and any other
human resource requirements. He/she will be given an allowance, determined by the
organization. There will be a staff from our school, whom we termed as the Liaison Officer
(LO), who will liaise with the OIC and with the company to oversee the attachment. At the
end of the attachment, the student will be graded on his/her overall performance.
Role of Student
The student is required to report to the company to which he/she is attached. He/she is
accountable to the OIC from the company throughout the duration of the project. The student
is expected to demonstrate his/her professionalism, good attitude, adaptive and collaborative
abilities, besides the technical and design skills that he/she had learnt. The student may be
assigned as a member of a project team or work individually. The student is required to
maintain a student log throughout the duration of the project. He/she is responsible in filling
the weekly summary of work done with regards to his/her tasks and assignments given
during attachment. This must be endorsed by the OIC.

At the end of the attachment, the student must submit the student log together with an IAP
report on the project highlighting his/her individual effort and contribution. The student must
give a demonstration and/or a presentation of his/her contributions to the project. Students
are evaluated jointly by both the OIC and the LO.
Role of Company’s Officer-In-Charge (OIC)
The OIC is a staff of the company appointed to jointly assess the student's performance in
the IAP’s project. He/she should be able to assist the student in adjusting to the company
and also in providing technical guidance with regards to the project. He/She is responsible
for evaluating the student's performance based on the student's attitude, reliability, quality,
productivity, teamwork, initiative and communication skills. He/she will work with the LO who
will provide the necessary assistance and liaison. He/she should highlight to the LO for any
disciplinary issues or concerns.
Please note that the IAP report must be vetted by the OIC before submission to ensure that
confidential information of the company or project will not be accidentally divulged. Please
desensitize the submitted report if necessary. The information in the report is kept within
NYP and will only be used for academic purposes only.
Role of School’s Liaison Officer (LO)
The LO is appointed to oversee the smooth running of the attachment. The role of the LO
includes liaising with the OIC of the student in the company, checking on the student’s
