BMTS 484: Computer Applications for Biomedical Systems,

Course Description:
Course focuses on computer application concerned with medical data acquisition,
storage and processing. The course also focuses on medical image compression by studying
common image compression algorithms. It gives also a detailed study of medical image format
(DICOM) and its storage using PACS.

Course Objectives:
1- Describe DICOM standard and why it was created.
2- Describe the difference between DICOM, DICOM-Compatible, and DICOM-Ready
Equipment.
3- List DICOM Value Representations (VR).
4- Define DICOM Data Dictionary.
5- Name Image compression types and some of their algorithms.
6- Describe PACS systems
Evaluation: Your grade will be determined based upon the percentage of the total scores.
An "A+" will be allocated to 95 % and above, "A" will be allocated to 90 % and above, "B+"
will be allocated to 85 % and above, "B" will be allocated to 80 % and above, "C +" will be
allocated to 75 % and above, "C" will be allocated to 70 % and above, "D+" will be allocated
to 65 % and above, "D" will be allocated to 60 % and above and "F" will be allocated to 60 %
and less.
