On Friday June 14th the Count Basie Theatre will be presenting a Gala celebration, “flick” a tribute to Film and New Jersey Filmmakers with a cocktail reception, a live performance by singer/songwriter Randy Newman followed by dinner and dancing. Randy Newman has won two Academy Awards, three Emmy Awards and six Grammy Awards and is being inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the end of this month; Randy is best know for hits such as: “Sail Away”, “Momma Told Me Not to Come”, “You Got a Friend in Me” (Toy Story), “We Belong Together” (Monsters Inc.), “Short People” and “Feels Like Home”. In 1926 the Count Basie Theatre opened its doors as “The Carlton Theatre” and was a vaudeville and movie house. Over the years it has screened iconic films such as the Sound of Music, Romancing the Stone, Herbie the Love Bug and Star Wars. Today, the Count Basie Theatre has the pleasure to have two movie series, the Film for Thought Series that pairs newly released movies and documentaries with incredible speakers spearheaded by Tom Bernard of Sony Pictures Classics and our Free Film Series underwritten by CBT’s Friends of Film that opens the doors of the Basie to everyone with an interest in seeing a wonderful movie. The Count Basie Theatre sincerely thanks both Tom Bernard and the CBT‘s Friends of Film for their support. The “flick” Gala weekend is a salute to their generosity. This past year Tom Bernard and Sony Pictures Classics have brought amazing films to the Count Basie Theatre such as Searching for Sugarman,(which just won the Academy Award for Best Documentary), West of Memphis and Neil Young Journeys in addition to incredible speakers such as the Academy Award winning Director, Jonathan Demme. Mr. Demme will be our honorary Chairman for the “flick” Gala. The CBT’s Friends of Film have generously restored the Theatre’s 35mm film projector and have consistently underwritten for years the Theatre’s annual free film series which has made films accessible to our community. In 2012-13 we have shown such wonderful films as Jaws, It Happened One Night, Easy Rider and Big. In 2013, the production of 35mm film will cease and all movies will be produced digitally. The cost of a state of the art digital projector for the Count Basie Theatre will be in excess of $100k. In addition, programming such as opera, theatre and ballet are now being fed via satellite from all over the globe. Proceeds from the “flick” Gala weekend will be used to purchase both a digital movie projector and the satellite equipment necessary to simulcast live performances from afar to our stage. We hope that you will join us as a Sponsor of our “flick” Gala celebration, help bring the Theatre’s movie equipment into the 21st Century, toast Tom Bernard and CBT’s Friends of Film and enjoy an evening of music and merriment.
