FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Nomi Dance Company Presents “Spring Affair” at the Athenaeum Theatre Chicago, Illinois (March 6, 2015) - Nomi Dance Company will be closing its 8th season this May with a captivating performance featuring four innovative Chicago choreographers. This gripping performance, Spring Affair, will be performed on Saturday, May 23rd at 8:00 PM at the Athenaeum Theatre. This show will run the gamut of emotions with themes that deal with consciousness of the present, intimidation of the majority and perception of the female role in society. NoMi will address these issues while engaging the audience using skills they are well known for: a high regard for dynamic risk-taking, athleticism, beautiful intricacies, and the dancers’ unique flavor when performing vibrantly challenging work. NoMi’s annual spring engagement includes the commissioning of two of Chicago’s finest talents, Monique Haley and Stephanie Martinez. Haley, formerly of River North Dance Chicago, is now a freelance dancer and choreographer in the Chicago area, and Martinez, a founding member of River North Dance Chicago, is one of the city’s most sought after choreographers. Other choreographers on the program include Joshua Blake Carter of Giordano Dance Chicago, and NoMi company member Katie Carey. Haley will be setting a full company premiere in her signature style, a unique and energetic fusion of jazz and contemporary movement. “Us, Without Walls” will showcase strong, open, and connected movement. The audience can look forward to a work filled with grit, passion, and eye-catching flair. Martinez will set a whimsical duet featuring NoMi dancers Paul Christiano and Stephanie Cihlar. “Adam’s Rib” is a tongue-in-cheek nod to female power. Set against a montage of vintage sitcom and commercial clips, this darkly comic battle of the sexes charts the rise and fall of mid-20th century chauvinism. This new work will showcase the strength and physicality of the dancers while adding whit and charm. Carter returns to NoMi to restage his popular work “Letting Go of Looking Back”, which premiered in May 2014. This audience favorite features an otherworldly atmosphere made possible in part by the brilliant light design by Jared Moore. Moore will use the very latest in concert lighting equipment from RGB lights, highlighting Carter’s sharp lines, alluring style, and syncopated movement, all set to the music of Mount Kimble, Trentemøller, and The National. Spring Affair will also include “And in the silence she found peace”, a composition by principal company member Carey, which premiered in NoMi’s season 8 opening concert. With dancers dressed in white, beginning in complete silence and moving initially from spontaneous sounds in the audience, this stunning work, inspired by meditation, focuses on the peace it brings and the joy of being conscious of the present. Spring Affair performs one night only on Saturday, May 23rd at 8:00 PM at the Athenaeum Theatre. Tickets are $12 (children under 10), $22 (seniors, students and dancers, and $32 (general admission adults). Group rates of 10 or more are available for $17 by calling the box office directly.
