Apply to be the Student Speaker at Commencement Eve Ceremony by April 25
As part of the new Commencement Week tradition, one graduating student will be chosen to
present a 5-7 minute speech to graduating students and their friends and families at the
Commencement Eve Candlelight Ceremony to be held on Saturday, June 7, 2008. Any
undergraduate, graduate, or professional student planning to graduate this spring is eligible
to apply. The on-line application consists of one essay question and needs to be submitted
by April 25. Finalists will be asked to audition in front of a selection panel of staff, faculty,
and students. The student speaker will be chosen based on their ability to exemplify the
qualities of spirit, integrity, passion for Ohio State, and strong public speaking skills. Apply

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------First Ever “Commencement Week” to Honor Spring Graduates
Student Affairs and the Alumni Association are partnering to provide a series of events
(June 5-7) to honor all undergraduate, graduate, and professional students that will
complete their degrees this spring. Events will include a celebration in the South Campus
Gateway, a "Things You Never Got to See Tour" of little-known places on campus, a postCommencement Rehearsal tailgate social, and a Commencement Eve Candlelight
Ceremony. All graduating students and their families and guests are encouraged to attend.

Join fellow campus leaders and officers for the Spring Leadership Retreat 2008! All members
of student organizations are welcome - discover and refine the leader in you!
Renowned motivational speaker Jonathan Sprinkles will be on campus to facilitate a one-day
leadership seminar on Saturday, May 17 from 9am-5pm that will focus on goal setting,
program collaboration, and conflict resolution. Registration is FREE but required, and spaces
are limited. Lunch and snacks are provided.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Be a Part of the 2008 African American Farewell Celebration!
The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), The Ohio Union, Coca-Cola, and the Frank W.
Hale, Jr. Black Cultural Center will sponsor the 16th Annual African American Farewell
Celebration to acknowledge and to celebrate those students graduating between Fall 2007
through Summer 2008. The event will include a personalized graduation ceremony,
keynote speaker, music, and a dinner reception. Family and friends are welcome to attend
at no cost.
This African American Farewell Celebration will take place on Saturday, June 7, 2008, at
4:00 p.m., in Independence Hall, room 100. A reception will immediately follow the
ceremony at The Frank W. Hale, Jr. Black Cultural Center. Registration forms are available
online or at the information desk at The Ohio Union (at Ohio Stadium). To be included in
the printed program, forms must be turned in by May 16th, 2008. If you would like more

Cornhole Tournament will benefit Pets Without Parents
The Sullivant Society: Junior/Senior Class Honorary is sponsoring a cornhole tournament to
benefit Pets Without Parents, a local no-kill animal shelter (www.petswithoutparents.net).
The tournament will take place Wednesday, May 7, 2008 5:00-8:00 p.m. on the South Oval.
There will be prizes for the winners and refreshments for everyone. The entrance fee for the
tournament is any non-perishable dog-food item. To sign up your 2-person or for more

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Help Clean Up the Ohio State Campus with AMA and PSE
The American Marketing Association and Pi Sigma Epsilon (sales and marketing fraternity)
will be teaming up this Sunday, April 20th to host an Ohio State campus clean up event.
This event will be open to all OSU students, especially those interested in the Fisher College
of Business. Representatives will be present from all 25+ Fisher student organizations.
Students will be placed in groups and sent out to different areas around campus to clean up
trash. After bringing back the trash, students will deposit everything they pick up into
provided recycling bins and garbage receptacles. Free pizza and pop will be provided at the
end of the event. Come to the Fisher courtyard at 10 am this Sunday to help make the

An informational meeting on medical school admissions hosted by Helix Tri-Beta on
Wednesday, April 23rd, 6 pm at Rm. 155 Jennings Hall. Special guest speakers
include Associate Dean for Admissions Dr. Don Batisky and current medical students at
OSUCOM. Plus FREE pizza and drinks for all who come. Open to any OSU student
interested in learning more about the admissions process and life after getting into medical

Please join MeshugaNotes, OSU's Jewish a capella group, and Summit United Methodist
Church's Centrum Singers for "Our Songs: An Interfaith Choral Event" on Thursday, April
17th at 8pm. The concert will consist of performances from both groups, as well as several
joint numbers, and will include music from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds with a
focus on music with a message of peace. This event is FREE and all are welcome to attend.
A dessert reception will follow the concert. The concert will be held at OSU Hillel Jewish
Student Center- 46 E. 16th Avenue (at the corner of Pearl and 16th Ave). Please contact

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Color of Spring -- The OSU China Oriental Dance Team Fifth Anniversary Recital
China’s five-thousand-year-old civilization contains countless treasures, and its fifty-six
ethnic groups each have their own unique customs and dances, which are like colorful
flowers blossoming on the land of China. To allow more people to understand the culture of
China’s many ethnic groups and appreciate each group’s individual style of dance, to
broaden the influence of Chinese culture overseas, and to promote unity among ethnicities
and display the warm regards of overseas students to their motherland, the OSU China
Oriental Folk Dance Team will, from 7pm to 9:30pm on Sunday, April 20, 2008, at
Weigel Auditorium on OSU campus, hold a large-scale folk dance performance.
Admission is free. This event is also an important part of the CSSS@OSU Series of Olympics
in
Beijing
celebratory
activities.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Surface Navy Enthusiasts' Annual Service Trip
Curious about the largest body of freshwater in the world and the ocean going vessels that
sail it? Interested in community service? Get involved with the annual Surface Navy
Enthusiasts' community service event at the Inland Seas Maritime Museum in Vermillion,
Ohio. We will start the trip off with landscaping the museum grounds, followed by a
personal tour of the oldest and largest museum exclusively devoted to the story of the
"Inland Seas" of North America.

The SERVICE Squad is looking for students of varying service and leadership experience to
serve as Site Liaisons to one of our volunteer sites on or close to campus! Open positions
include serving as a Site Liaison for the Unverferth House, International Neighborhood
Coffee Hour, the American Red Cross, and the Columbus AIDS Task Force.

stereotyping/racial profiling to follow the film.
4/29/08-SSDP and the Libertarian Studies Organization team up to bring LEAP (Law
Enforcement Against Prohibition) to campus for an open discussion of law enforcement view
of drug prohibition. Hear from cops and retired judges. Q&A to follow the event.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary as a student organization at the Ohio State University,
Folclor Hispano performs traditional dances from Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Peru,
Bolivia, and Spain on FRIDAY, April 18, 2008, from 8 pm to 9:30 pm at the Thurber Theater
in the Drake Performance and Event Center on the OSU Columbus campus, 1849 Cannon
Drive. Come and enjoy an evening of Hispanic culture through the excitement of dance,
music, and costumes. Bring your friends and family.
FREE tickets are available the evening of performance on a first-come basis beginning at
7:15 pm or by prior pick up at the OSU Theater Box Office in the Drake Performance &
Event Center (1849 Cannon Drive), Monday-Friday from 10 am - 4 pm. Parking will be

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions and First-Year Experience is looking for driven,
enthusiastic student leaders to serve as Student Facilitators for the Leadership Collaborative
2008, September 1-5. Student facilitators will be role models for the LC students in
attendance at the conference, serve as small group facilitators along with professional staff
members during the conference, aid students in understanding how the conference relates
to being successful student leaders and much more. Applications are available now on the
First Year Experience website, www.fye.osu.edu. You must be at least a third-year student
at the time of the conference to serve as a student facilitator. Applications are due

Did you know that LifeCare Alliance delivers nearly 2,000 meals in Franklin and Madison
County during any weekday and nearly 1,000 meals to the homebound on the weekend? You
and members of your student organization can be a part of the great group of volunteers who
deliver a hot, nutritious meal and a message of loving concern from the community. Be a
volunteer on a Meals-on-Wheels route! Routes take about an hour and a half to visit 12-15
elderly or disabled persons during midday hours. This is excellent experience working with
older adults, as well as a great way to help build your résumé! In addition, it can help fulfill
service requirements for your student organization. Training is provided. Weekend

First-year students and the campus community are invited to An Evening with Gregory
Howard Williams, the author of last fall’s Buckeye Book Community (BBC) selection Life on
the Color Line: The true story of a white boy who discovered he was black. Dr. Williams will
speak on Thursday, April 24 at 7:00 p.m. in The Event Place at Landmark’s Gateway Theater
(located in the South Campus Gateway). Tickets are available now to first-year students and
to the campus community and the general public April 17. Tickets can be picked up from
Enarson 120 during regular business hours. Dr. Williams is a former dean and Carter C.
Kissel Professor of Law at Ohio State’s Moritz College of Law. He is currently president of the
City College of New York. This event is sponsored by First Year Experience. For more

Interested? If so, please join OSUCOM’s Difficult Discussions Committee on Tuesday, April
22, 2008 at 12:00pm at 1069 Graves Hall for an in depth discussion on “Sexual Assault”.
Our goal is to provide an opportunity for increased awareness and understanding of this
sensitive topic in our community.
We invite YOU to participate in a sobering conversation with physicians and sexual assault
survivors. Lunch will be provided.

The Unverferth House serves as a temporary residence for The Ohio State University
Medical Center patients and families who live outside of Franklin County. The Unverferth
House offers volunteer opportunities for individual volunteers as well as volunteer groups
through a collaboration with the OSU S.E.R.V.I.C.E. Squad. Individual volunteers can help
with housework, cleaning, and other miscellaneous tasks on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and
Thursday evenings.
Volunteer groups can help by making dinner for the Unverferth House residents, assist with
yard work, and perform house cleaning tasks. Groups can sign up to help with yard work
and/or house cleaning tasks on Sunday mornings as well. Additionally, groups can schedule
dinners on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings.

OIA Seeking Orientation Leaders to assist International Students
You could play an integral role in introducing new international students to Ohio State by
serving as a mentor and sharing your experiences as a successful student. Throughout the
academic year, Orientation Leaders (OLs) assist our incoming international students in a
variety of capacities by connecting them to important university resources, communicating
policies as well as preparing new students for a successful beginning to their Ohio State
career. OLs work in collaboration with other OLs, Office of International Affairs (OIA)
professional staff, and other University administrators to ensure that new students have a
positive check-in and orientation experience.

information on Orientation Leader's responsibilities and time commitments, the application

Students For Recycling is organizing its 5th annual Dump + Run yard sale! This program
turns unwanted, reusable items into cash for charities and Ohio State student organizations.
Items are collected during move out and put up for sale during Welcome Week. Volunteers
are needed between May 19th and June 13th to help with sign posting, collecting, and
sorting, as well as during the sale date in September. Pay is hourly per person, and will be
distributed within 30 days after the sale. This is a great way to raise money for your student
