Please submit a brief write up, including contact information and website (if applicable) to burden.37@osu.edu II. ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENTS The Ohio State University Chess Club is Alive Again! This student organization had disappeared for several years but now it is active and we meet every Tuesday from 7-9pm at the RPAC meeting room 1 which is located on the second floor behind the basketball courts. We are looking for new players of any skill level to come and join us. The students just won the 2008 Ohio Collegiate Chess Championships last month. I bring with me 22 chess sets and chess clocks each week for all to use so all you have to do is show up and enjoy yourself. Please contact Kelly Bloomfield (kbloomfield@studentaffairs.osu.edu) if you are interested in coming. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Underlings hosts David Harrison Underlings, the undergraduate linguistics organization, is proud to welcome linguist and author David Harrison, who will be involved in a series of three events. A movie, "The Linguists". Thursday, April 10th, at 7:30pm in McPherson room 2019: This is a documentary made by Sundance Films about Harrison and Gregory Anderson's work on documenting endangered languages. A discussion, "Knowledge of Species and Eco-systems in Endangered Languages" Thursday, April 10th at Campbell 335. Time: 4:00 - 5:30. Harrison will discuss the topic in an open forum. A lecture, "When Languages Die: Tracking Local and Global Patterns of Language Extinction". Friday, April 11, from 3:30-5:00 in Page Hall room 20. Harrison will be discussing language endangerment and language death, and the significance of these topics to the academic and wider worlds. Harrison argues that dying languages provide valuable information about the world around us, information which, if we continue to ignore these languages, will soon be lost forever. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Safe Back Awareness: What's on your back? The Human Factors & Ergonomics Society student chapter at OSU is hosting an event on Wednesday, April 9th, beginning at 11:30 a.m. outside near Oxley’s By the Numbers. Another exciting evening is being planned for Take Back the Night 2008. TBTN is a yearly event which raises awareness about sexual violence against women and children. The evening will include sexual survivors clothesline project, speakers, performers, a speak out and finally a march! Organizations interested in tabling are invited to join us Thursday, May 15 from 5pm-9pm on the Wexner Center plaza. Hear a speaker from World Vision talk about this global pandemic, and hear a talk on the interface between Jesus and justice. The Unverferth House serves as a temporary residence for The Ohio State University Medical Center patients and families who live outside of Franklin County. The Unverferth House offers volunteer opportunities for individual volunteers as well as volunteer groups through a collaboration with the OSU S.E.R.V.I.C.E. Squad. Individual volunteers can help with housework, cleaning, and other miscellaneous tasks on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings. Volunteer groups can help by making dinner for the Unverferth House residents, assist with yard work, and perform house cleaning tasks. Groups can sign up to help with yard work and/or house cleaning tasks on Sunday mornings as well. Additionally, groups can schedule dinners on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings. Throughout the academic year, Orientation Leaders (OLs) assist our incoming international students in a variety of capacities by connecting them to important university resources, communicating policies as well as preparing new students for a successful beginning to their Ohio State career. OLs work in collaboration with other OLs, Office of International Affairs (OIA) professional staff, and other University administrators to ensure that new students have a positive check-in and orientation experience. Students For Recycling is organizing its 5th annual Dump + Run yard sale! This program turns unwanted, reusable items into cash for charities and Ohio State student organizations. Items are collected during move out and put up for sale during Welcome Week. Volunteers are needed between May 19th and June 13th to help with sign posting, collecting, and sorting, as well as during the sale date in September. Pay is hourly per person, and will be distributed within 30 days after the sale. This is a great way to raise money for your student organization!!! In February, over 225 items were donated, including our goal of 100 Helper meals – THANK YOU! The food can be dropped off in Taylor Tower, Morrill Tower’s Fresh Express location, or Kuhn Honors and Scholars House before Wednesday (4/30). Each year student leaders are chosen to represent The Ohio State University as members of the Homecoming Court. These individuals are selected by a judging panel consisting of staff, faculty, and notable alumni. The court members are chosen based on their ability to exemplify the qualities of leadership, spirit, integrity, and achievement through their contributions and involvement at The Ohio State University. Applications are due by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 11, 2008 to the Information Center at Ohio Union (Ohio Stadium, between gates 22 and 24). Four unstapled copies of the entire application must be turned in. Applications not meeting this requirement will not be considered. Morgan Spurlock’s lecture and book signing will be on Thursday, April 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Weigel Hall Auditorium. Spurlock is the Academy Award-nominated director of Super Size Me, the creator and producer of the reality television series 30 Days, and author of Don’t Eat this Book. Spurlock will talk about his experiences as a documentary filmmaker and about the 30 Days episode “Minimum Wage”—set in Columbus—where he tries to survive for 30 days on $5.15 an hour. Tickets to this event will be available to first year students beginning Thursday, March 27 th and to the campus community and general public on Thursday, April 3rd.
