Standard Operating Procedure – Cutting and
Slipping Drill Line
1.
Purpose
The common thread throughout the SOP and HWD Policies and Procedures in general is
the identification of responsibilities. This manual is intended to clearly and concisely
identify the steps required by employees to complete any given operation in a manner
that is consistent with Horizontal Well Drillers standards. It will document progressive
steps required in sequence that are to be followed, an authorizing company department or
position, and an author that is to be consulted if there are questions in any portion of the
SOP standards.

Scope

Prerequisites
Personnel are required to wear proper personal protective equipment, follow job safety
rules, and have the appropriate experience and certifications to carry out their job
functions satisfactorily.
4.
Responsibilities
The Rig Manager/Tool Pusher is responsible for the enforcement and proper execution of
this standard.
The Driller is responsible for notification to the Tool Pusher before starting this
procedure. He is then responsible for proper execution of the procedure under
supervision of the Tool Pusher.
5.
Procedure
1. First thing tell rig manager you are going to cut drill line.
2. Then get all tools for cutting drill line in proper location for access.
3. Complete and review a JSA on slipping and cutting drill line.

4. Then bring blocks down to setting blocks on derrick and set slips in
hole.
5. Then take off all weight enactor and PASON on dead line.
6. Then count how many wraps you are going to cut off, and mark
with paint stick.
7. Then pull off all other drilling line then tie drilling line off so it can’t
slip.
8. The wrap black tape on drilling line where you are going to cut it.
9. Then put HY line cutter on drilling line and cut it.
10. Then move cut drilling line out of the way.
11. Then pull all other drilling line off drum and take dog knot off drum.
12. After you take dog knot off drilling line and put on other end of
drilling line you cut off, make sure you put 4 inch of drilling line in
front of dog knot.
13. Then put dog knot back in drum, and take horse head loose and
take wrap off.
14. Then hold snug on drilling line while driller put line back on drum
real slow until line gets snug, then slip some line off drilling spool
and then let driller get snug again until you are at the right spot.
15. Then put wrap back on horse head and titian back up.
16. Then put weight enactor back on and PASON back on.
17. When everything is right and tools put up, tell rig manager so he
knows you are ready, pick up off derrick blocks and pick up off
slips.
18. Check everything out to make sure it is ok.
19. Then rub blocks up and down 2 or 3 times to make sure it is
tracking right and if it is you are good to go.
20. NOTE: Once slip/cut of drill line is performed crown-o-matic must
be immediately inspected and re-adjusted.
