Objectives:
(1) Plan for today; point out homework on board;
(2) Writing: Students will turn in paper copies of MLA format narrative essays, which must also have been
submitted to Turnitin (SOL 12.6, 12.7).
(3) Vocab: Students ill show Vocab Unit 3 flashcards for a homework grade. Spend 10-12 minutes doing partners
work with the flashcards. Then, reinforce knowledge of common roots/suffixes/prefixes, and this units words,
through completion of Exercises III and IV (pg 42) in workbook (SOL 12.3);
(4) Literature: (CRISS) Activate prior knowledge about characteristics of the epic and the epic hero, and relate
these to Beowulf. GROUP WORK: Students will continue to read Beowulf in small groups (2nd period from pg
46; 3rd period from pg 52), completing an open-book quiz as they read. Relate the story, structure, characteristics,
themes, and characters to the cultural issues and values of the era. Identify kennings and other poetic devices in
use, and determine purpose --how they help to create effect, tone, and theme. Students will also complete the
character/place/name organizer as they read. Identify features of the epic, and of the epic hero. Class discussion
follows (SOL 12.3, 12.4).

(1) Review of yesterday; plan for today; point out homework on board;
(2) Vocab: Power point review will help students prep for today’s quiz on Vocab Unit 3. Students will then take
QUIZ on Vocab Unit3. Following the quiz, teacher will use another power point to introduce Unit 3 words,
pronunciation, and definitions (pg 47-48 in workbook) (SOL 12.3);
(3) Literature: GROUP WORK: Students will finish reading Beowulf in small groups, completing an open-book
quiz as they read. Relate the story, structure, characteristics, themes, and characters to the cultural issues and values
of the era. Identify kennings and other poetic devices in use, and determine purpose --how they help to create
effect, tone, and theme. Students will also complete the character/place/name organizer as they read. Class
discussion follows. Identify features of the epic, and of the epic hero (SOL 12.3, 12.4).
(4) Team selection for tomorrow’s review game -- using a class roster.
(5) Literature -- Nonfiction: Teacher presentation using projection will introduce students to the non-fiction
contributions of the Venerable Bede, and of Alfred the Great, during the Anglo-Saxon period. Teacher will read
aloud a bio/intro to Bede’s History of the English Church and People (lit book pg 96). (SOL 12.5).

Objectives:

(2) Vocab: Reinforce Unit 4 words through completion of Exercise 1 in workbook, pgs 49-50 (SOL 12.3).
(3) Literature: Literature: Reading Analysis – Read and comprehend narrative text—relate to themes and
issues of different historical periods. (Activate prior knowledge) Students will brainstorm what they recall
about socialism and how it differs from capitalism. Verbal sharing. Teacher will provide historical/cultural
introduction and information on author (HG Wells) as introduction to students’ first novel, The Time Machine.
Students will understand that it is both a science fiction story and an allegory, so they must determine the
symbolism and nature of the allegory as they read. Students will take notes. Distribution of novels and a list of
questions to answer. Students will watch a media clip about the book on YouTube (SOL 12.3, 12.4, 12.2).
(4) Literature: Test Review Game. Competing in a Jeopardy-style review game, students will demonstrate and
reinforce knowledge of the Anglo-Saxon period’s culture, values, influences, and literature (SOL 12.3, 12.4, 12.5).

(4) Literature: Reading Analysis – Read and comprehend narrative text and poetry—relate to themes and
issues of different historical periods. Through teacher lecture using power point, students will be introduced to
the literary contributions, biography, and style of Geoffrey Chaucer. They will take guided power notes,
understanding the evolution of British language (to Middle English due to Norman influence) and literature since
the end of the Anglo-Saxon period. Focus on the addition to literature of the heroic couplet, of elements of realism,
and of humor through various devices of satire. Students will learn the different literary forms that emerged in the
Middle Ages: medieval romance, Breton lais, exemplum, mock heroic, etc., and the characteristics of each. (SOL
12.3, 12.4, 12.5).
Handouts:
(1) Test on Anglo-Saxon Unit
(1) Power point and guided note-taking sheets on Chaucer, Canterbury Tales, new literary forms of the Middle
Ages, and devices of satire.
