Backward Design -- At the end of the stated time, students will be able to:
Literature---( 4 weeks Anglo-Saxon through Medieval Periods includes fiction/poetry/non-fiction)
Compare/contrast development of Brit lit in historic context (12.4a)
Recognize major lit forms and their elements (12.4b)
Recognize characteristics of major eras (12.4c)

Objectives:
(1) Plan for today; point out homework on board;
(2) Students will turn in rough drafts of narrative essays (SOL 12.6, 12.7).
2nd PERIOD
(3) Literature: Class will read “The Wanderer” (on handout). Led by teacher, students will identify features of
the elegy, as well as the four stressed beats per line/kenning/caesura/ alliterative verse that characterized A.S.
poetry. Students will infer tone and theme (pain of exile) of poem –relate to A.S. culture. Examine content;
determine reasons for “exile”, and how these poems are typical/representative of Anglo-Saxon lit and culture.
Compare/contrast the three elegies. Summary discussion of elegiac poetry (SOL 12.3, 12.4).
(4) Break into small groups for review game – review for quiz on Anglo-Saxon poetry (SOL 12.3, 12.4).
(5) Literature: (CRISS) Activate prior knowledge about characteristics of the epic and the epic hero. Review
actual historical background of characters, and setting, in Beowulf. Begin to read this heroic epic. Students will
relate the story, structure, characteristics, themes, and characters to the cultural issues and values of the era.
Identify kennings and other poetic devices in use, and determine purpose --how they help to create effect, tone, and
theme. Students will complete the character/place/name organizer as they read (SOL 12.4, 12.3).
3rd PERIOD:
(3) Vocab: Working with partners, students will spend 10 minutes practicing with flashcards (SOL 12.3);
(4) Quiz on Anglo-Saxon poetry (SOL 12.3, 12.4, 12.5);
(5) Literature: (CRISS) Activate prior knowledge about characteristics of the epic and the epic hero. Review
actual historical background of characters, and setting, in Beowulf. Begin to read this heroic epic. Students will
relate the story, structure, characteristics, themes, and characters to the cultural issues and values of the era.
Identify kennings and other poetic devices in use, and determine purpose --how they help to create effect, tone, and
theme. Students will complete the character/place/name organizer as they read. Analyze the presentation of
Grendel, and what he represents (SOL 12.4, 12.3).

Tues.
Objectives:
(1) Plan for today; point out homework on board;
(2) Vocab: Power point review will help students prep for today’s quiz on Vocab Unit 2. Students will then take
QUIZ on Vocab Unit 2. Following the quiz, teacher will use another power point to introduce Unit 3 words,
pronunciation, and definitions (pg 37-38 in workbook) (SOL 12.3);
(3) Mini-lesson on punctuation use when joining independent clauses. Teacher presentation followed by student
practice on worksheets and at whiteboard. Review of placement of thesis statement. Review with examples of use
of SPECIFIC detail/language when writing (SOL 12.6, 12.7).
(4) Group work: Narrative essays will be returned to students with grading rubrics attached. Students will work in
small groups to conduct peer review on essays, making suggestions for improvement, and noting needed changes
(SOL 12.6, 12.7).
(5) Literature: Students will continue reading Beowulf. Students will relate the story, structure, characteristics,
themes, and characters to the cultural issues and values of the era. Identify kennings and other poetic devices in
use, and determine purpose --how they help to create effect, tone, and theme. Students will complete the
character/place/name organizer as they read (SOL 12.4, 12.3).
