Office hours: MW 4-5 p.m., Th 2-5 p.m., F 12 noon-1 p.m. and by appointment.
Text: David S. Dummit and Richard M. Foote, Abstract Algebra (3rd Edition), Wiley.
Topics: Abstract group, classical examples of groups, subgroups, mappings, quotient
groups, isomorphism theorems, group actions, Sylow theorems, rings, ideals, P.I.D.s,
Euclidean rings, factorization, division rings, fields, polynomials.
Classes: MWF 3-3:50 a.m. in SC 348. Students are required to attend and will be held
for all material presented in class.
Homework: Homework will be assigned each week.
Exams: There will be two hourly exams and a final exam. The hourly exams will given
on Tuesday, February 21st and on Tuesday, March 28th.
Date, time and location of the Final exam will be announced.
Grading: Grades will be determined using the following weighting:

Course Learning Objectives: At the end of the semester, the student should be familiar
with the basic algebraic structures (groups, rings, fields etc.), should be able to “think
algebraically” and prepare and write proofs, and should have an adequate knowledge of
the subject to use it where required in Applied Math and Theoretical Computer Science.
Course Outcomes: Student should know the basic concepts and definitions and be able
to prepare and write correct and clear proofs.
