Beamish Paul Beamish holds the Canada Research Chair in International Business at the Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario, London, Canada. He is the author or co-author of over 50 books and 100 refereed articles. His books are in the areas of International Management, Strategic Management, and Joint Ventures and Alliances. His articles have appeared in Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS), and elsewhere. He has received best research awards from the Academy of Management, the Academy of International Business (AIB), and the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada (ASAC). He has been recognized in the Journal of International Management (1997 and 2003) as one of the top three contributors worldwide to the international strategic management literature, and by International Business Review in 2010 as the world’s second most productive I.B. scholar in the 1996-2008 period. He served as Editor-in-Chief of JIBS from 1993-97 and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Academy of International Business, and Asia Pacific Foundation. Professor Beamish has supervised 25 PhD dissertations, many involving international joint ventures and alliances. His consulting, management training, and joint venture facilitation activities have been in both the public and private sector. He has worked in Australia, Canada, China, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Finland, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Portugal, Sweden and the United States for such organizations as The Canadian Foreign Service Institute, Dupont, Harvard Institute for International Development, Hayes-Dana, Labatt/Interbrew, Nortel, Schneider, and Valmet. His newest practitioner book, “Joint Venturing”, was published in 2008. At Ivey, he has taught on a variety of school programs, including the Executive MBA offered at its campus in Hong Kong and the new MSc program, with its major in International Business. From 1999-2004 he served as Associate Dean Research. He worked for Procter and Gamble and Wilfrid Laurier University before joining Ivey’s faculty in 1987. Beamish also has responsibility for Ivey Publishing (IP), the distributor of Ivey’s collection of over 3000 current cases. Ivey Publishing is the world’s second largest producer and distributor of business case studies. Beamish has authored over 100 case studies, primarily in the international management area. These have appeared in case journals, and in over 125 books. His cases have been consistently among Ivey’s top external sellers. He is recipient of best case writing awards from the European Foundation for Management Development, ASAC, the European Case Clearing House, and AIB. Over 70 of his cases have been translated into one or more languages: Chinese, French, Spanish, Russian, Korean, or Japanese. Over 2.5 million copies of his cases have been MBA School of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law studied worldwide. Professor Beamish (Bao Ming Xin in Chinese) has worked on Asia-specific issues for many years. He has written case studies and/or conducted research involving China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam. He has served as a consultant to The World Bank on technology transfer to China, provided training programs in Asia for Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, and co-edited multiple series of casebooks published in Chinese. As Director of Ivey’s Asian Management Institute (AMI), he is overseeing a process which generates research about business in Asia, and which has resulted in over 600 new Asian cases being prepared. Since 2005, Beamish has also served as Director of one of Ivey’s four cross-enterprise research centres: Engaging Emerging Markets (see http://www.ivey.uwo.ca/centres/engaging/). The centre’s three-fold focus is entering emerging markets, operating in emerging markets, and engaging market competitors.
