“Your Sins Are Forgiven.”
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
It is correct to call St. Luke’s Gospel as the Gospel of Forgiveness. None of the Evangelists speaks as frequently as St. Luke about
the forgiveness. He draws a sharp contrast between the self righteous Pharisee, Simon, who keeps all the rules but does not have
the sensitivity to perform the basic acts of kindness toward a guest, and the woman who has a reputation for sinfulness but who
receives Jesus with loving service (Luke 7:36- 50).
The woman was eager to meet with Jesus and heard that he was dining at Simon's house. So she burst in, bringing an alabaster
flask of very expensive ointment and came up to Jesus. She immediately began crying and her abundant tears bathed Jesus' feet.
She then began to dry his feet with her long hair. She kissed the feet of Jesus and poured the ointment over them.
Simon had not had Jesus' feet washed when he came into the house but the woman had washed his feet with her tears and dried
them with her hair. And therefore - now comes the point of the story: “Her many sins are forgiven, hence she is showing so much
love.” The one who loves less, clearly has not yet been fully forgiven. And, turning to the woman at his feet, Jesus says, “Your
sins are forgiven.” Again Jesus says to the woman, “Your faith has made you whole again. Go in peace.” Jesus says the same for
us in the wonderful Sacrament of Reconciliation. It calls each of us to ask ourselves how often we receive the Sacrament of
Reconciliation.
Jesus tells the woman that her sins are now forgiven. It was really her faith and clear repentance which won her forgiveness. The
forgiveness is manifested in the outpouring of love that follows. Love and sin are incompatible; they cannot co-exist in the same
person. She loved Jesus so much at that moment that she could not be a sinner.
At this point, her immoral past was totally irrelevant. God deals with people as they are here and now. What I did yesterday does
not matter very much. All that matters is what I am doing now, how I am relating to God and those around me right now. We
remember the man who died beside Jesus on the cross. He had led a terrible life and was now being executed for his crimes. Yet he
appeals to Jesus and is promised that he will go to God hand in hand with Jesus that very day. The world may look at it as unfair.
Fortunately, God's ideas of fairness are not ours. Otherwise, we might be in trouble because of our past.
The story of the sinful woman links with the story of the sin of David (2 Samuel
12:7-13). Although he had been made king over Israel and had been showered with
God's blessings, that was not enough for him. When his sin was pointed out to him
by Nathan, the prophet, David bitterly repented of what he had done, "I have sinned
against the Lord." His repentance won the Lord's forgiveness although there were
punishments, including the untimely death of his beloved but rebellious son, Absalom.
Once again, we see how God always tries to rehabilitate and not to punish. God's desire
is that we all be made whole and experience inner peace and harmony.
Each of us could look to our lives and be overwhelmed by the sheer malice of our sins
and the enormity of God’s mercy. Perhaps we weren’t as evil as David. Maybe we
didn’t have the reputation of the woman in the Gospel, but there are still many incidents
of darkness we would rather remain hidden. We could dwell on our pasts, but we
shouldn’t. We shouldn’t because God doesn’t want us bogged down in the past. He
wants us to recognize His Grace, Mercy and Forgiveness. For this purpose, Jesus
instituted the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
There are certainly many people other than us who have been forgiven by the Lord. Some of these people have hurt us, and have
asked for forgiveness. We need to forgive them. Quite often, we hear stories about people who would rather die than forgive
someone. Maybe there is someone in each of our pasts who has hurt us and sought forgiveness and whom we have walked away
from rather than be reconciled to. Hatred kills. Jesus has forgiven us and he calls us to extend mercy and forgiveness towards those
who cause us grief and harm. In the cross of Jesus, we see the supreme example of love and forgiveness and the power of
goodness for overcoming evil.
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Abraham Kochupurackal CMI

The list of names to be prayed for and those in the Military
will be “refreshed” four times a year. (January 1st, April
1st, July 1st, and October 1st). All prayer requests will need
to be re-requested at that time. Thank you for helping us to
keep the list up-to-date.
PARISH NURSE NEWS
There will be a 2-day seminar on Healing Touch (a
relaxing, nurturing, energy therapy to assist you in bringing
balance to your physical, emotional and spiritual life) at St.
John's Lutheran Church on June 25th and 26th. The cost is
$175.00 and includes materials, and lunch. Please call
Brigid O'Rourke for more information at 952-472-1416,
ext. 226.
Leadership is requested for each liturgical ministry. For
the past many months, reminder calls have been made to
those serving at the weekend liturgies. In our busy lives, a
reminder is surely appreciated. At times, we all need to be
reminded that every ministry is vital in our prayerful, joyful
and full participation in Mass – the summit of our faith, our
thanks and praise to God.
CHILD & FAMILY FAITH FORMATION
FROM KATHY’S DESK
Volunteers for Vacation Bible School: We still have
volunteer opportunities for our upcoming Vacation Bible
School the week of June 21 – 25. If you’d like more
information, please contact Kathy Hejna at 952-472-1284,
ext. 147 or visit OLL’s VBS website at
www.groupvbspro.com/vbs/ez/oll2010 and click on the
“volunteer” tab.
Now for the big question: We are looking for a leader for
each ministry to step forward and volunteer to make the
reminder calls for those assigned in your ministry. For
example, if you are a greeter, you would call all the
greeters assigned for the weekend by Thursday of the
preceding week. This may not be forever, as after a length
of time, we would ask another minister to take
responsibility for your group.
Vacation Bible School Donations: Please bring your
donations for VBS to the Faith Formation office by June
15th. Make sure you label anything you would like
returned to you. Thank you so much for your generosity!!
If you are not a liturgical minister, but would enjoy this
type of volunteer activity, we would appreciate your help.
Thanks in advance for calling Sr. Carrie at 952-472-1284,
ext. 168 to volunteer!
First Communion Pictures: There are still some pictures
waiting to be picked up. You can stop in the Faith
Formation office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays
from 9:00 to 4:00 p.m. or call Kathy to make other
arrangements.
*Update! We have two volunteers who will call all
ministers for the 5:30 Mass. Are you available to help with
the Sunday Masses?
Thought for the Week: We cannot love God unless we
love each other, and to love we must know each other. We
know Jesus in the breaking of bread and we are not alone
anymore. Heaven is a banquet and life is a banquet, too,
even with a crust, where there is companionship.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word on June 20th, at the
10:30 Mass: All children, ages Pre-K through Grade 4, are
invited to join us for a special age-appropriate liturgy after
the Mass begins. The children will then return to celebrate
the Eucharist with the congregation.

The bible says in 2 Corinthians 9:8, 9, “God is able to give
you more than you need, so that you will always have all
you need for yourselves and more than enough for every
good cause.” The next verse says, “He gives generously to
the needy, his kindness lasts forever.” God will richly bless
our efforts as we pass it onto others in need. We are truly
blessed to have people in our community who devote so
much of their time to help others in need.
