STEVE JOHNSON
DISTRICT GOVERNOR 2011-2012
Steve Johnson was born in Manhattan, Kansas. He graduated from Salina (KS) high school
in 1966 and enrolled at Kansas State University (KSU). In 1969 he and high school
sweetheart Brenda were married. A year later Steve graduated with a bachelor’s degree in
business administration.
After college Steve joined the United States Air Force and was commissioned a 2 nd
lieutenant. He entered navigator training and received his wings in 1972, subsequently
training as a B-52 electronic warfare officer. His first assignment was to Grand Forks Air
Force Base. During his career Steve flew almost 2,500 hours in B-52s and B-1Bs, including
41 combat missions in Southeast Asia. He completed his MBA with Troy State UniversityMontgomery. Steve retired from the Air Force in 1990.
Following AF retirement, Steve joined the Grand Forks International Airport as its director of
operations. In this capacity he managed construction projects, aviation security, airport
rescue and firefighting, and oversaw day-to-day landside and airside activities. He earned
his American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) accreditation in 1993. He became
executive director of the Airport Authority in 1997 where he served until his retirement in
2009. Steve was a board member of the Grand Forks Chamber of Commerce and Grand
Forks Region Economic Development Commission Boards of Directors. He served as
president of the North Dakota Airports Association and as state representative to the Great
Lakes Chapter of AAAE. He also served on the AAAE national diversity committee.
Steve joined the Grand Forks (ND) Lions Club in 1992 at the invitation of long-time friend
Lion Herman Livingston. Lion Johnson served his club as president in 1996-1997, the year
Grand Forks was devastated by flood. He was privileged during this year to distribute LCIF
emergency grant funds and direct donations from around the world. Despite obvious
challenges, he presided over the Club’s 75th anniversary celebration that year. Lion Johnson
recently wrapped up a second year as Guiding Lion for the UND Campus Lions Club. He is
a North Dakota Lions Foundation Life Donor and a Melvin Jones Fellow.
Lion Johnson’s hobbies include fishing, golf, photography, computers, and collecting 1950s

NORTH DAKOTA LIONS
DISTRICT 5NW
PAT VANNETT
DISTRICT GOVERNOR 2011-2012
Pat Vannett was born and raised on a small Iowa farm surrounded by a large family where
she learned the value of hard work, dedication and family. Pat moved to North Dakota in
1979 spending fifteen years in the Fargo area before moving to the Bismarck/Mandan area in
1994. Church music is Pat’s love and she has been active singing, directing and coordinating
music in parishes where she has lived for over 30 years. She was an award winning sales
manager with a woman’s clothing company for twelve years and was a speaker at two of
their national conferences. Pat is currently a licensed Realtor working in the
Bismarck/Mandan area. She and Lion Kevin have a blended family of five children
From her very first date with Lion Kevin (a Lion event) she knew that Lions would become a
part of her family. Pat joined Lions in September 2003, with the Club Branch of the Mandan
Dacotah Lions and was a Charter Member in February of 2004. Pat has served her club in
many capacities including all officer positions, has had perfect attendance and has been
involved in numerous club activities and fundraisers. On the district level, Lion Pat has
served in several positions beginning in 2004 to present and has attended seven district
leadership rallies having been a presenter at several rallies and conventions. Pat has
participated in two extension workshops and has completed the Certified Guiding Lion
training. Lion Pat has been involved in the multiple district youth exchange program having
hosted several youth and served as camp counselor at the Medora camp in 2008. She has
attended numerous district and state conventions, multiple district conventions, and rallies
throughout the multiple district. Pat has attended three USA/Canada Forums and is a
graduate of the Great Plains Lions Leadership Institute. She is the recipient of two
International President’s Commendations and was named as District 5NW’s 2009-2010 Lion
of the Year.
Pat has several goals for 2011-12, including: 1) challenging the Lions of District 5NW to
serve with a Lion’s Heart by believing in each other, becoming better listeners, especially
listening to our newer members and younger Lions; 2) promoting the Club Excellence
process in no less than four locations where clubs will evaluate themselves, their
membership and their community needs and create club goals; and 3) focus on being “good
neighbors” to our extended Lions family by increasing inter-club visitations.
WE SERVE with a LION’S HEART

meetings of your zone.
Keep in mind that at the end of your term of office you will be called to give an
account of your stewardship. Your record of achievement will be compared with
the records of other presidents. Your club members will best decide your success.
Now is the time to plan, and take steps to continue to build your club in every way
possible so that it may be an example to other clubs, and a credit to the
community, the district and to Lions Clubs International.
Will you, as president, perform your duties to the best of your ability?’
President: I will.
Installing Officer:

GREAT PLAINS ASSISTANCE DOGS FOUNDATION
(SERVICE DOGS FOR AMERICA)
Great Plains Assistance Dogs Foundation (GPADF) is considered to be
the nation’s leader in Emergency Medical Response Dog training. In June
2005, GPADF was voted a “Best Charity” by Independent Charities of
America and is a member in good standing of Assistance Dogs
International.
In its mission statement, “The goal of the Foundation is to assist physically
challenged individuals to gain greater independence and autonomy by the
use of a trained and certified assistance dog without adding excessive
financial burden to those using the GPADF program. Physically
challenged individuals are the focus…assistance dogs the tool.”
This program, based in Jud, North Dakota, has worked with more than
100 individual cases in 33 states. GPADF has helped individuals living
with disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, Quadriplegia, Multiple Sclerosis,
Traumatic Brain Injury, and Seizures. Great Plains also works with
multiple disabilities, with children, and emergency medical conditions.
GPADF is proud and honored to be supported by North Dakota Lions.
Lion Edward Duden donated ten acres of land for the complex. A 1998
addition at the facility is known as the “Lions Wing.” Support from LCIF
and many Lions clubs and members provided a significant portion of the
funds to make the dream of the addition a reality.
On invitation they will provide a program at Lions club meetings, visit local
schools and local elder care facilities. To learn more about their programs

LEADER DOGS FOR THE BLIND
MISSION
The mission of Leader Dogs for the Blind is to enhance the lives of blind
and visually impaired individuals.
MISSION STATEMENT
In support of this mission, our actions are guided, supported and
measured by our values.
HISTORY
Leader Dogs for the Blind had its start in 1938 when members of the
Uptown Detroit Lions Club sought to obtain a dog for one of their friends,
Doc Wheeler. Unfortunately, the only existing school at the time was
unable to provide one to Doc for several years. So, the Lions began their
own quest to get help for Doc. This journey culminated in 1939 with the
founding of Lions Leader Dog Foundation with Lions becoming an integral
part of the organization. The first class graduated four students, including
Doc Wheeler, and went on to become an internationally recognized school
for serving the blind community.
In 1952, upon absorbing another dog guide school, Path Finder, the
school in Rochester, Michigan, became known as Leader Dogs for the
Blind. Over the years the school has used many different breeds of dogs,
including Doberman Pinchers, Boxers, and Shepherds, but many are now
Labradors and Retrievers.
Today, Leaders Dogs for the Blind have assisted over 13,000 people in
achieving the freedom of safe and independent travel. Graduating
approximately 300 teams each year, the school serves individuals from all
areas of the globe. Leader Dogs is one of only two schools in the world to
offer dog guides to persons who are both deaf and blind.
