THEATERWELTEN
June, 11th-14th in Rudolstadt, Germany
The Association of German Amateur Theatre (BDAT) organizes in cooperation with the
Thuringian Theatre Association for the first time the worldwide unique amateur theatre
project – THEATERWELTEN in Rudolstadt in 2015.
The "THEATERWELTEN" - Kickoff starts with 7 international workshops. International
theatre experts from six continents give practical insights into theatre-forms and
performing techniques of their regions. Guest performances and discussions about
cultural and political issues complete the program of “THEATERWELTEN”
The workshops are open for experienced players and directors as well as for
beginners. Youth leaders, educators, students, artistic directors and festival
organizers who are already internationally active or planning international projects are
also welcome.
THEATERWELTEN should be implemented in the future as a permanent biennial
international festival in Rudolstadt. The traditional city of Friedrich Schiller has
already been hosting theatre festivals from Germany and abroad for 25 years.
WORKSHOPS
Workshop 1 – THEATRE IN AFRICA – “Space-Body-Escape”
Teacher: Christel Gbaguidi (Benin)
Christel Gbaguidi - actor and drama teacher from West Africa - invites the workshop participants to a
self-reflection on the concepts of "identity" and "illegality". As a part of the long-term project "The
refugee Republic" Christel Gbaguidi developed special theatre techniques for dealing with the topic of
"Migration". Participants will get the opportunity to work with photos and paintings of refugees and
develop their own perception on this subject in the performance. The workshop will be held in German.
Workshop 2 – THEATRE IN ASIA – “No Budget Theatre“
Teacher: Ashesh Malla (Nepal, Kathmandu)
Ashesh Malla - founder and artistic director of the Sarwanam theatre in Kathmandu - is one of the
pioneers of the political street theatre in Nepal. In his workshop, he presents his self-developed
concept of "no budget theater." Participants will learn to develop a performance without use of any
props and other resources, with nothing but their own body and facial expression. The workshop
provides an introduction to the eastern theatre forms, particularly the teaching of Bharata Muni, and
combines elements of yoga and meditation. Comfortable clothes are recommended. The workshop will
be held in English.
Workshop 3 THEATRE IN EUROPE – “Stanislavski´s system“
Teacher: Mikhail Chumachenko (Russia, Moscow)
Mikhail Chumachenko - professor at the University of Performing Arts in Moscow – will give in his
practical theatre training an insight into the key elements of drama school after Konstantin
Stanislavsky: education, presentation, interaction, communication and perception. Participants are
asked to read the plays "The Bear" and "The Proposal" of Anton Chekhov and to bring along the texts
if possible. Comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended. The workshop will be held in Russian
with German translation.
Workshop 4 – THEATRE IN LATIN AMERICA – “Listening to the body, moving the voice”
Teachers: Sandra Monteagudo, Jorgelina Balsa (Patagonia, Argentina)
Sandra Monteagudo and Jorgelina Balsa - both drama teachers and actresses from Argentina – will
send each workshop participant on a journey of creative experimentation. Starting with the eye contact
as universal language participants will get in touch with each other using their body language
(gestures). The native tongue is not only a communication code (words), but it holds an inner musical
meaning (sound). Starting with free improvisation of individuals a common performance will be
developing during the workshop. The workshop will be held in English.
Workshop 5 – THEATRE IN OZEANIA – “Maori Theatre”
Teachers: Rangimoana Taylor, Bronwyn Tweddle (Wellington, New Zealand)
Maori theatre artist Rangimoana Taylor and Pakeha (= Non-Maori) theatre director Bronwyn Tweddle
offer a practical experience of traditional Maori theatre. Participants will learn some authentic Maori
performance forms with traditional movements which imitate the birds of New Zealand, traditional
Maori songs and war dances. The workshop offers an introduction to the Maori culture and
demonstrates in practice a cultural collaboration between a Maori and a non-Maori artist, as it is
common in New Zealand. Der Workshop will be held in German and in English.
Workshop 6 – THEATRE IN NORTH AMERICA – “Contemporary Dance Theatre“
Teacher: Ariel Cohen (USA)
Ariel Cohen - artist and dancer from Massachusetts, United States – offers an introduction to
contemporary dance theatre in her workshop. Elements of Bartinieff fundamentals, Pilates and contact
improvisation give participants the opportunity to delve deeper into their body and their own movement
styles. Improvisations will begin as a solo experience and move into working together as a group. The
workshop will be held in English.
Workshop 7 – THEATRE AND DIVERSITY – “Racism and critical whiteness“
Teacher: Jessica Laignel (Berlin, Germany)
When speaking about theatre during cooperation or during international meetings artists are often
restricted to national or Euro-centric points of view. They consider their own approach as the only true
and reproduce (racist) clichés in their efforts of intercultural exchange. "Theatre and diversity - Racism
and critical whiteness" sensitizes also experienced participants to these fundamental aspects of
international work. The workshop will be held in German.
