THTR 100 – Introduction to Theatre

Course Description:
Studies plays of the classic and modern periods, of genres such as tragedy, comedy, farce and
melodrama, and of the art and craft of theatre.
Course Objectives:
 Discuss the importance of drama to cultural values
 Recognize types of drama and their conventions
 Recognize the styles of the most influential dramatists
 Understand the basic elements of theatre: audience, performers, script, point of view and stage
environment.
Linkage of course to Associate of Arts Degree Mission and Outcomes
Students should:
 Know the subject matter appropriate to the Associate of Arts degree.
 Develop effective oral communication skills
 Succeed at transfer institutions
 Understand the importance of cultural traditions, diversity, and ethics in the modern world.
 Have an understanding of fine arts or performing arts.

Theatre: Brief Version – Ninth Edition by Robert Cohen
Additional required texts will be available online at http://www.wncthtr100.wordpress.com. If you
have any difficulty accessing these texts, please contact me BEFORE they are assigned and I will do my best to
accommodate you.
Students must see at least two Live Theatre performance over the course of the semester.
Students will also be required to attend Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company’s production of
MY FAIR LADY November 8-23, 2014. See www.wnmtc.com for more information.

Attendance:
Theatre is a collaborative art form, and this course is no different. Your attendance is essential, as much
we do will be in groups, and will be factored into your final grade. If you must be absent, please contact me at
least two hours BEFORE the absence, so that I can adjust the class accordingly. In case of emergency, please
call/leave a message at your earliest convenience.
In case of an excused absence, assignments may be turned in the following class period; however, you
will still be subject to the late assignments policy listed below.
Turning in Assignments:
All assignments may be turned in either in class in printed form, or via e-mail in a .doc, .pdf, or .ppt
format. No other formats will be accepted. When submitting e-mailed assignments, please put “THTR 100 –
Assignment Name – Your Name” in the subject line.

Late Assignments:
Assignments may be turned in late; however, you will lose 10% of the grade for that assignment for each
class period the assignment is late.
Presentations may be made up the class immediately following the due date ONLY.
Classroom Policies and Procedures:
Please turn off or silence all cell phones before entering class. While the majority of the instruction in this
class will be through hands-on group projects, lectures, and in-class exercises, you will be expected to put in
some time outside of class to complete projects, etc. If you miss a class for any reason, it is your responsibility
to get any information you missed from a fellow student.
Academic Integrity:
Students are expected to do their own work. If a student turns in a project done by someone else, he/she
will receive 0 points for that project and will not be allowed to make it up.
Withdrawals/Incompletes:
Dropping a full-term class must be done through myWNC by Friday, Oct. 26. Classes dropped after the
100 percent refund period will remain on a student transcript with a "W."
If you decide you want to change the class to Audit – you need to do this through myWNC. You can
change from credit to audit up until October 20, 2012.
If a student has completed 75% of the class with a grade of C or better, but cannot complete the class due
to a compelling reason, the student may request an incomplete (I) grade. This allows the student 120 days after
the semester to complete the remaining work and receive a letter grade.
Class Cancellations:
The only method of notification for class cancellations is via our email address used for myWNC. Make
sure to check your email before coming to class to make sure the class is not cancelled.
WNC reserves the right to cancel classes with low or insufficient enrollment. The list of canceled courses
will be updated as courses are canceled, including those resulting from instructor illness or inclement weather.
The canceled class web page is updated throughout the semester. Students concerned about possible college
closure due to inclement weather should check the WNC website, the main college phone number, and local TV
stations.
